Good evening everybody!!!
I guess I'm just going to have to figure out a way to introduce you northern ladies to Maid-Rites!
They're yummy!!!!
I've had a busy day and actually felt like being "out and about" today. Of course, you'd never know it by my golf score. I attributed my inability to connect to my lack of energy. After a rather sick round of golf, several of us went to lunch, where I introduced them to Nicki's theory about retail therapy, and being good friends, they agreed to accompany me to Talbots where a big clothing sale was in progress. Then we were so exhausted from shopping...and yes, Nicki, it did do the trick....that we stumbled into Starbucks for a peppermint latte. And before I knew it, the day was just gone. I felt so terrible that I'd missed an opportunity today to do my laundry, iron, and clean house!
I hope everybody is doing well today. I'm looking forward to the walk in September, too.

So sorry that you have to make this journey, but this is the place to be if you have to do so. As Laura said, we will be here for you and the Illinois women on this thread are AWESOME....such strength, determination, and compassion. Mazy is also from Quincy and I used to come to your fair city to shop when I lived in Macomb.
Tell us a little more about yourself when you have time and come back often to post or ask questions. There are no "stupid questions" when it comes to this and we have all been there and some of us are still doing the treatment phase.

I am rather new here myself as I just finished treatment (chemo and rads). I am quite alive and kicking.
I am sorry you needed to begin this journey too. When I was at your point, I was more or less stunned. I found that I was better able to focus once I began the plan for my treatment.

Welcome Nancy (and sorry too). I'm pretty new too. I am currently going through chemo and will be until the end of October. Then on to rads.

My sister just called and said that channel 7 news said they have some info on a new breast cancer treatment and will be explaining it tonight on the 10pm news...
Did any of you hear this? I wonder what it's about.0 -

Yes, I heard the same thing. I'll be watching, and I hope it really is something new. Recently channel 5 said they had a new tx, and it was the low fat diet. I think we had already learned about that study. It's always exciting to hear about something new.
After listening to you about hormones in dairy products I switched to Oberweiss milk. I'd been thinking about it, but was a little lazy. Luckily there is a store a few blocks from me, but now I have to get past the ice cream! I wish it was a food group, but I'm still trying to lose the last five pounds of chemo weight. Anyway, thanks for the little push I needed.0 -

I am not a newbie, but I am still in treatment. I finished chemo. I am doing rads now. The radiation onc changed my plan today to 7 more rads and then 5 boosts. She wants to focus more on the lumpectomy site. You will get through this....ask any questions.....this group is great. Best wishes...Pat0 -
On a different note I AM A GRANDMOTHER.
She may be "walking" with us in September, Laura, if the weather works for us. Heaven knows she has enough pink outfits!

When I asked my oncologist, what he thought about getting my ovaries out, he said NO if brca testing for my mother was negative.
I thought I heard others got ovaries out to suppress hormones (my tumor was double hormone positive)
and it also helps ward off breast cancer recurrence (my Mom's oncologist said it cuts recurrence of BC 50 percent), but I'm specifically wanting to boost my chances from getting OVCA (my Mom was dxed 1998 at age 72, with symptoms one to two years).

Hey, all! I'm really jazzed, it's been quite a week. I had a wonderful time in Sonoma with my Jane Austen friends. Came back to all these storms- made for a bumpy ride. Last three days I've been trying to catch up on my reports and working at Trader Joe's.
THEN, early this afternoon, I was contacted by one of the ladies from the Barrington Y-me group- ABC World News with Charlie Gibson is doing a segment about a study which questions if cancer support groups actually help bc patients survive longer or provide the benefits previously thought. They wanted to talk with someone who had used a support group from the beginning of treatment and who was metastatic (I guess I'm metastatic because it was in the lymph nodes, but I'm not stage 4- which is what I really think they wanted, but oh, well). So another lady and I were interviewed, plus they filmed our Y-me meeting. Now they are coming out tomorrow to do some more personal shots. I pmed Laura asking if she could come over so that we could "walk" together, since she's part of my support group here.
Whew, that's all I know for now. It's supposed to be shown on Monday- but it could always be bumped for something else.
Kater- wanted to say that my Brca testing was negative, and my oncologist was fine with having my ovaries out. My breast surgeon and my ob/gyn were fine with it too. My mom also died of ovarian and they agreed that it made sense to take out my ovaries.

We have a Maid-Rite here, I thought it was just local. I had the closest thing to a Maid-Rite at a church function recently and I got the recipe. I am making them tomorrow, my family loves them.
I am 49, been divorced for 18 years. I have a 19 year old son with two rare conditions, which have left him visually impaired with joint problems. He lives with me and so does my elderly mom. We all moved in together three years ago after my dad died. Mom has macular degeneration and hasn't driven since I was a baby, so we felt like someone needed to be here with her. She is really independent, but her site limits her.
I work full time for my brother, who lives about 20 miles from here. I work at home, managing his medical auditing business. All our employees work at home, they are all over the country, the main office is at my house, I have people come in and help every once in awhile.
I also have my own biz, making candles, bath/body products, personalized favors and distributing food and drink mixes. My son helps me with that. I had closed the websites while I was having my first surgery. I need to reopen them for now. I am not sure I will be able to keep up the hectic order pace during the holidays while taking chemo. I might have to just sell what I have made and not offer my huge variety of stuff.
I have read through this thread and everyone seems awesome here. I have posted on several others sections of the forum, too.
I forgot to ask my surgeon about how long it will be before I can drive after the lymph node removal. I am such a planner and having breast cancer has thrown off my plans.

I drove about 3 weeks after the lymph nodes were removed. But certain maneuvers were painful.

Nancy - my mom has macular degeneration too. It has been really hard on her emotionally. My dad died 3 years ago from a long battle with emphysema. She had spent at least 5 years just caring for him - no life at all. She is the picture of health for an 80 year old. So, 6 months after he dies, she gets macular degeneration and can't drive anymore. She lives alone and we all help out taking her places, but it has been very hard on her since she has always been very independent and doesn't like to ask for help.
I drove about 2 weeks after my surgery. I agree that certain manuevers were tough.

This is so cool...
This morning, I went to JanClare's house when the film crew arrived and they filmed she and I speed walking. It was fun. They told us to walk and talk as we normally do...I told them that wouldn't be a problem because we seldom have a moment of silence anyway! The camera man sat in the back of a minivan - with the door up and the mini van drove in front of us as we walked and he filmed. Sometimes they don't use all the footage they shoot, but it would be cool if they include some of us walking or at a minimum some of just JanClare.

Here I was, repidly approaching the end of rads and I develop, of all things, severe sciatica. Can't sit so no computers. Hope the anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers do their thing!

DH finally having his "butt" fixed on Monday...pain was getting to be too much. This way he will be healed and pain-free for his return to his school on 8/1.
Oh...my Dad and his siter both had bc, but weren't dx'd until their mid-80's so I went ahead and had the genetic testing done on 7/11. hopefully I will be negative.
Well....pills seem to be kicking in so I need to do some cleaning around here...everyone have a FANTASTIC day!0 -
Im here. Im here! Work has gotten really busy and I havent been getting home til really late. New schedule next week where I will be getting to Highland Park Hospital at 7:00 am to make rounds with the doctors there. That means - very little computer time for me. And Im pouting big time.0 -

Hi everyone! Just a very quick hello to all of you. My son and his family are here this weekend from Minnesota so "Grandma" is busy. Then I'm keeping the boys for two days while Mom and Dad house hunt in Lexington, Kentucky and then following my daughter-in-law back to Minnesota for a couple of days mid-week. Everyone hang in there and I will pop on when I get the chance.

Whew, all- I'm bushed. I think I need to go back into treatment just so I can get some rest! Lately it's all been typing reports for my husband, working at Trader Joe's, and trying to get in training for the 2 day Avon walk in October. Not to mention fitting in the news crews.
It was fun doing the TV interview, and I'm so glad that Laura came over to walk with me for the "follow-up" shots they wanted. According to the reporter, the segment will air this Monday, 7/23/07 on the ABC World News with Charles Gibson. That's 6:30 pm ET and 5:30 CT.
There is also possibility that Nightline may do an expanded segment sometime next week, but that's just a possibility. The only definite is the Monday network evening news. Barring some more important breaking news.
I just hope that I come off fairly intelligent- Sometimes it's so hard to talk about something so heartfelt with out coming off sappy or repeating yourself. If I find out I was doing the "um, ya know" thing, I may shoot myself! LOL!

I need to start checking this Illinois Ladies board more often. I am also in Quincy. So sorry you have to deal with this disease but there is support here. I get my treatment at Blessing Cancer Center. My regular oncologist is Dr Arrambide but got word today that she is out for awhile. So I'll either have Dr Smith or the new onc ..think his name is Dr Ali. I have stage 4 mets and am doing fine. I am in the chat room most evenings around 8:30 or 9:00 PM. Please fell free to come in and chat. It's such a wonderful group of friends from all over. You can go there for support, chat about your day or just vent if you need to.ha! I've lived here all my life so it's possible we already know eachother. I have to add that the Radiation Oncology Dept at the cancer center will blow you away with their service. There are some of the finest people I've ever met that work there. I have Dr Khil and have seen Dr Yu. They are fine doctors and the support is great. Take care and hope to talk to you soon, Mazy0 -

Wow, this is great. I am going to the Blessing Cancer Center, too. I just met Dr. Smith last Monday, he is my onc. The other Dr. Smith is my surgeon. I have another surgery this Thursday. I have been here since high school and am active in the community and my church. I am getting ready to leave now, but I will check the chat room out tonight or tomorrow night. I have plans tonight, but should be home around that time.

Breast cancer certainly reinforces the notion that it is a small world. I am happy you have ecah other in Quincy.
Nicki, that "blog card" is so lovely. Thank you. You are such a dear person. Baby Adeline was born in the same hospital where I got my BC surgery. I felt pretty triumphant walking out those doors gloating over my new grandbaby and not obsessing on the cancer.
By the way, Nicki, I had my chemo in Highland Park Hopsital and I know you work there. My Doctor is Doctor Dragon and my surgeon is Br. Brinkman. I am a ten-month survivor and I know that sounds "tentative" at best.
I am so excited about the airing of the film clip. Do not fret a bit about how you sound. You will sound honest and that is all that is needed.
Have a happy Sunday and keep enjoying life. We all sound so happy these days even though we have our worries.

If you went to chat at 8:30 or 9:oo I'm sorry as I came in late. I asked some of the others and they said they hadn't seen you so I'm hoping I didn't miss you. I'll be on monday night by 9:00. I had grandkids this weekend and crashed after they went home cause they wore me out.haha. I'm so glad you are going to Blessing too. My next appt is on Aug 10th. Do you know your stage or anything yet? I was originally stage 2b in 2003 and am stage 4 now because I have a recurrance in spine on the bone. I go and have Zometa infusions once monthly. I know very few people named Nancy but I wouldn't doubt that we know some of the same people. My husband owns a local auto repair shop and he knows so many people that I don't since I no longer work up there and haven't in awhile. Talk to ya later, Mazy0 -
