Chevy, RE: chickens
Egg production is dependent upon amount of daylight. It declines in autumn and can even stop for a while through the winter. It will resume again in Spring. You can continue egg production by providing artificial light in the morning end of the day.
Just a bit of free information from a farm girl!

Onco! So good to see you on the boards! And thanks for the chicken advice. One of the ones we're getting is close to 10 years old. Totally a pet.

Those pictures are so cute! And I passed that information along in an email.... about the Chickens! I thought maybe as they got older, they quit laying...I was worried, because I didn't know what they would do with them, if they stopped laying altogether...

Kiwi, Thank you. Hi. I had a pet Rhode Island Red chicken when I was a kid. I think she lived to around 12 or 13 years. And then there was soup. Yes, she nourished us during and after her life. Thankful.
Chevy, you wrote: "I thought maybe as they got older, they quit laying...I was worried, because I didn't know what they would do with them, if they stopped laying altogether..."
Yes, they do quit laying eventually. Then we make soup.

ON NO! OMG! SOUP? Eeeeeeeeks! That was so funny..... Hah! But I didn't want to think that.... I prefer to think they just let them all go, and they wander the streets, and meet up at Starbucks, and live in the River-bottoms.... and play Canasta.
