Worried if I am high risk

  • hi

I had a single mastectomy in my left breast in Nov of last year with DCIS clear margins but according to pathology report I had intermediate to focally high nuclear grades with necrosis and micro calcifications. I’m now worried that my healthy breast is at high risk of developing abnormal cells. My doctors keep saying I shouldn’t worry that this is unlikely but it’s not what I keep reading because of the high nuclear grades. Has anyone experienced this? Should I consider removing my healthy breast?

Hi @Tatiana1, The risk of developing contralateral breast cancer with high grade DCIS is about 3% over the first 5 years, 6% over 10 years and 10% over 25 years. These numbers are statistical so they can’t predict what will happen to you. They also presume that you don’t have any underlying genetic risk that would make you more susceptible to breast cancer. If you are concerned you should have another conversation with your doctors to ask about this. All the best.

  • thank you Maggie15 I had a genetics test done and came back negative. I will speak to my doctor about the possible risks and will have to come up with a plan. Thank you
