My wife's period is back after 5 1/2 years of Tamoxifen

My wife was diagnosed with Stage 2A ER/PR positive, Her2 Negative back in June 2019. She went through 2 surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy. She started taking Tamoxifen in late 2019 or early 2020. She has co-morbodities Thyroid Cancer, Type 2 diabetes, liver steatosis, diabetic nephropathy, and likely depression.

Last month, she told me she had her first period since starting Tamoxifen.

Anyone know what could be going on here? She will see her oncologist this week. We are quite concerned.

Hello @vidal1993. Talking to her oncologist is good. I’m so sorry this is creating new worries! When my periods stopped abruptly on Tamoxifen (at age 49) I was cautioned that it may not be actual menopause, but just a cessation of periods (as in, still be careful with birth control).

About 9 months later I had 1 random and abnormal period, followed by twinges of pain and a tiny bit of daily spotting for a couple of months. My gynecologist followed up on this and did an ultrasound, found that I had a uterine polyp and that was removed. I’m back to no periods now, and no spotting. But I now expect anything ... I could resume having periods, maybe another polyp, or actually finally be through menopause … but I will keep in close contact with my gynecologist and oncologist. My gynecologist was more helpful in this particular situation.

I hope you can get reassurance that everything is normal!

I appreciate the response Needs a Nap. I will look forward to hearing from the oncologist. Looks like this problem may not be uncommon although we have been quite worried.

@vidal1993 I understand! I was incredibly stressed about having the one period that was both extremely painful and very heavy, unlike anything I had ever experienced. I almost went to the ER because of the pain. And then all the abnormal spotting that followed. I knew I could expect random periods and was told that could be a good thing actually (& was warned they might be extra heavy) but I didn’t think what I had was normal. Turns out it wasn’t. But during that time it caused me so much stress and anxiety, not knowing if something was wrong.

If something feels not right, it’s good to get it checked out I’m learning.

Thank you again Needs a Nap. As it turns out, the oncologist has ordered an endometrial biopsy and we are going Friday. Will keep our fingers crossed!
