Are you scheduled to have a lumpectomy or mastectomy in the month of September? Join us here where we support each other as we prepare for our surgeries, ask questions about what to expect, share reservations and fears, and support one another through preparation and recovery. And, we encourage others who've "been there" to answer questions about what to expect with surgery and recovery.

Share your surgery date so we can cheer you on, the type of surgery you'll be having, and let us know how you do after it's done so others know what to expect first-hand.

While you get ready, check out the Shopping/Packing/To-Do List for Surgery and Recovery. For more information, check out the Surgery section on our site for info about what types of surgery, questions to ask, choosing between lumpectomy and mastectomy, and what to expect with surgery and recovery.

If you need more support, consider joining our Virtual Support Groups for those going through treatment — and beyond!

We're all here for you and we're in your pocket for surgery day and beyond!

  • Hello everyone,

I had my third re-excision lumpectomy on 9/10 and am waiting for results on whether they were able to obtain clear margins. They said it was a 50/50 chance. Interested in hearing everyone else’s journey and how they’re doing !

    Hi Nicole,

Waiting for pathology results can be so stressful — especially after multiple surgeries. You’re not alone; a lot of our members have gone through more than one re-excision before getting clear margins. It’s exhausting and emotionally draining.

We're hoping this time gives you the clear margins you’ve been working toward. In the meantime, be gentle with yourself while you heal and wait. If anyone else wants to share their margin stories, We'd love to hear them too — it really helps to know how others got through this part.

Sending you positive thoughts and hoping for good news soon. 💗

  • I had my DMX with immediate reconstruction using the SGAP flap approach last Friday, 9/19. So I will be one week post-op tomorrow! I usually attend the Tuesday zoom support group and have unfortunately, missed the last 2. I just wanted to check in and let everyone know I made it through my surgery which ended up being just under 8 hours, followed by 2 days in the ICU. My 2 lymph nodes tested negative for cancer and I’m waiting to hear about further pathology to make sure I’m free of any microscopic cells. But good news that nodes were negative! I was discharged Sunday and home before noon which felt too rushed. The first couple of days home were rough, but now we have a routine down and things are going smoother. I have my first post-op appointment tomorrow morning and I’m hoping to lose a couple of drains, as I have 4 and it requires a lot of management. But overall, I’m mainly sore in the back incision area more than my chest wall. My recon breasts are bruised and swollen but look like me which is what I wanted. They are not nearly as sore as my SGAP incision. Pain is quite manageable with med protocol I was given. Just staying on top of that seems to be key. Finding a good balance of movement and rest is also key. Just wanted to let everyone know how it went. I’ve missed you all these last 2 weeks and hope everyone is doing well!

@mobrooks3 So glad you checked in! We’ve all been wondering how you were doing. Huge congrats on getting through such a big surgery — and what a relief to hear your nodes were negative! 🎉

It sounds like you’ve had a whirlwind of a week but are finding your groove with pain meds and a routine at home. Hoping your appointment tomorrow goes smoothly and that you get to lose a couple of those drains — that really does make things feel easier.

We’ve missed you in the Tuesday group too and can’t wait to see you back when you’re up for it. For now just keep taking it easy and giving yourself grace — you’re doing awesome. 💕
