“Close” margins
Hello I would like to see if anyone else has experienced this. I have invasive ductal carcinoma stage 2 ER+ PR+ HER2- my tumor was 18mm at the 8 O’clock position left breast. I had a lumpectomy 2 weeks ago. The margins were considered negative but the pathology report states the lateral margin was close. The distance from the margin was 0.5mm. I have an appt with the breast oncology surgeon tomorrow. I am worried I may need more surgery. Has anyone else experienced “close” margins? Thanks!

Hi @farmerswife72, For IDC a clean margin is defined as “no ink on tumor”, less than your .5 mm margin. Most of my margins were the closest they could be but no re-excision was needed. If the tumor is DCIS exclusively then margins of 2 mm are required.
