Likely Fibroadenoma? 29F US biopsy recommended.

I am an AA 29F that just had an ultrasound done due to a new breast lump finding. I’ve had it for around a year or so but it felt more pronounced after losing some weight, it is very palpable right next to the nipple. Aside from that no significant changes and seems to swell on or around my cycle. Here was the radiology findings:

“Targeted ultrasound of the left breast in the palpable area of concern at 11-12:00, 1 to 3 cm from the nipple demonstrates an oval, hypoechoic mass with internal vascularity measuring up to 2.8 cm. The mass demonstrate posterior through transmission but demonstrates a slightly lobulated margin. As such, although this reflects a fibroadenoma, the mass is suspicious and ultrasound-guided biopsy is recommended. ”

He rated me a BIRADS 4 and I am in such a wreck. I haven’t stopped crying. Has anyone gone through something similar or have professional experience that can decipher the statistics of malignancy?

Hi @dht123, I’m sorry that you are going through the stress of waiting for a biopsy. Unfortunately there is no way to tell whether a finding is cancerous by looking at imaging , A biopsy is done so a pathologist can examine the tissue sample. BIRADS 4 on its own means the chance of malignancy is 5% to 95%, such a wide range it is not very helpful. Sometimes the letters A,B and C are added to help differentiate levels of suspicion but many radiologists don’t use them.

Fibroadenomas are more likely than tumors to change size with your cycle but there can be exceptions. Try to keep busy so you don’t dwell on this, easier said than done. Best wishes for a benign result.
