Radiotherapy Delay due to wound dehiscence
Hi I had a lumpectomy on Feb 13 2026 with sentinel node biopsy. All clear. Clean margins etc. I was happy to understand that I need 2 weeks of radiotherapy. I'm hormone positive and her 2 neg. For the past four weeks I have a small wound. Pico helped but I still have a slightly open surface wound on inframmary fold. Not he best place for healing! Radiotherapy is therefore delayed maybe for 16 weeks post op. I didn't need chemo. I'm 70 and although I'm assured the delay is perfectly acceptable immediately still ever so anxious. Can anyone relate to this? Thanks

Hi @suzipoo, It's hard when circumstances cause a delay in your planned treatment. Radiotherapy can interfere with wound healing because it temporarily reduces the local blood supply and interferes with tissue healing at the cellular level. After diagnosis I had to delay surgery for a while because I was on IV antibiotics for a bone infection in my jaw. There could have been a bad outcome if the hard to treat infection had spread due to surgery so the con of waiting longer for treatment outweighed the pro of getting the tumor out right away.
I hope your wound vac speeds up the healing. If things aren't progressing on the timeline you have been given you could ask to see a wound surgeon who specializes in hard to heal wounds (although this can be problematic depending on which LHB you reside in.) All the best for good healing and and easy rads treatment.
