Biopsy on red/bruised breast that previously had cancer

I write worried about my mom, and I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience.
3-4 years ago she had a very early stage cancer in her right breast, it was removed and she had radiation, she says about 3 weeks worth.
She has been good since.
Tuesday she woke up with that breast bruised at the top toward the center of her chest.
Then throughout the day, the bottom half of her breast turned a reddish brown, like a suntan color. When she lays down, it would appear darker. When you stretch the skin, it looked darker too.
It sort of faded yesterday and today faded a bit more. she went to the oncologist today and they were stumped. Did a punch biopsy to rule out angiosarcoma.
wont know for a few days.
I really want to believe it’s just a radiation related thing. The doctor did say that since it faded a bit that’s a good sign.
anyone have any similar experience? She is on anastrazole
also, there were no other side effects. No lump, no density, no swelling (aside from the first day it was slightly swollen), no pain, no skin texture, no orange peel skin, no nipple change, no fluid or blood. Nothing.

Hi @palmtree7, we're so sorry for the concerns about your mom that have led you here. Is it possible your mom may have sustained a small injury that caused her bruise? Is she on any medications aside from Anastrazole which may cause her to bruise easily? Has her oncologist ordered any imaging scans or bloodwork?
While radiation may result in redness on the breast, this is usually a short-term burn or irritation side effect that would occur within the first weeks of radiation.Please keep us posted on her biopsy results, and let us know how she is doing.

thank you for your comment. She is not on any other medication that would thin the blood, and insists that she did not have any occurrence of an injury that would cause this. I know that sometimes we injure ourselves without realizing, so I’m hoping it is that. I’ll update when I can. Thank you

@palmtree7 I had breast cancer in 2017 with radiation. In Dec 2023 I noticed a purple bruise on my right breast. My daughter works for Moffit Cancer Center in medical records and looked at it and I could see in her face she was worried. I made an appt with an Oncologist who did 2 punch biopsies and it was angiosarcoma. I had chemo, no radiation, double mastectomy with clear margins in early 2024. In Dec 2025 I noticed thickening of the skin & darker color on my breast bone. 2 punch biopsies show the angiosarcoma had returned. Chemo, radiation & more surgery mid July. I agree that if the discoloration faded that's a good sign. Please keep us posted. My thoughts & prayers are with you and your Mom. 🙏
