Neuadjevant endocrine therapy for ILC

Has anyone else with ILC tried hormone therapy before surgery? After many months I finally have a positive response. Originally on tamoxifen but had tumor growth so switched to Lupron and letrozole. Took 4 months but my entire cancer, the main tumor plus its satellites have gone from 6.8cm to 4.4cm. So grateful and now scheduling mastectomy with node biopsies for September. Anyone else go this long between diagnosis and surgery? About 8-9 months and I am really dreading this. Just a note, the whole goal was to shrink the cancer for a better surgical outcome. Would love to hear from other ILC people.

It’s great to hear that you’re seeing such a positive response after switching treatments, @tacocat. Going from 6.8 cm to 4.4 cm is a significant change, and we hope your upcoming surgery goes smoothly.

@tacocat I was diagnosed in early 2020…was originally supposed to have surgery in March 2020 but it was postponed due to the pandemic so I was put on anastrozole for around 4 months - I didn't have any real tumor shrinkage (I had IDC on one side, ILC on the other) so it didn't really change anything for me. I had really bad side effects from the hormone blockers so opted not to continue those after my surgery (DMX with immediate DIEP flap recon) in late June 2020 (recurrence/mets risk was assessed as 3% with taking them vs. 6% without and I was 62 at the time so odds seemed reasonable in my situation). I think that having a good response and minimal side effects from meds could contribute to a better cosmetic outcome (if you choose to do reconstruction) and of course would indicate you won't be troubled with significant side effects from taking the meds so lower recurrence/mets risk.
