First abnormal mammo with US - BIRADS-5! Help with report...
Hey there, I'm mid-40s female, two kids (both BF), history of recurrent mastitis in the area of the breast where this report is focused. I went for my last diagnostic mammogram that was watching calcifications (BIRADS-3) I've had since my very first mammogram. This time was different—tissue changes, so they sent me off for an ultrasound, which returned the following (edited slightly for length):
Tissue Density: The breasts are heterogeneously dense, which may obscure small masses.
Calcifications now appear more pleomorphic than on prior exams. In addition there is now architectural distortion in this region + adjacent nodularity.
Ultrasound report:
A spiculated nodule 9 x 9 x 11 mm.
Adjacent lobulated nodules 9 x 8 x 12 mm and 11 x 9 x 8 mm. Note made of a hypoechoic nodule measuring 6 x 5 x 6 mm.
Evaluation of the right axilla revealed no adenopathy.
Can anyone explain what the significance of nodules/nodularity is? And whether a spiculated nodule is cause for the complete freakout I'm having? The radiologist explained nothing, basically came in and said stuff looks different, get a biopsy. The only detail I've removed from the above findings is the exact locations of the nodules. I didn't have any additional info about the features of the stuff he found. I can't get the biopsy for another couple of weeks, so I'm trying to avoid googling too much…

Hi @lobularloon, I’m sorry you have the stress and worry of waiting for a biopsy and the results. Unfortunately imaging can’t tell whether a nodule is malignant. While spiculated nodules are more likely to be malignant than smooth ones they can be benign. The radiologist doesn’t know whether you have cancer since only a biopsy can diagnose that. Hopefully you will get good news. Whatever the result, this site is a good place for information and support. All the best.

see if you can get on waitlist for sooner appointment . This does not change results but it will keep you less stressed out. I was able to get off waitlist for my biopsy at a hospital where they do 8 of these a day …in the end ,they could not do it because my boobs too small . So I ended up having surgical excision. First I had marker placement which added another week to time line. I do not like the wait times and the anxiety women are going through for treatment. I am really horrified . They need more machines, better diagnostics, and some standard of care that is uniform across the board. Call tomorrow and tell them you will take soonest available appointment and then follow up the following week. People do cancel . Waitlists do move. Your worry is enough to get you in if a spot.
