Has anyone had a Latissimus Dorsi Myocutanious rotational flap

I had LD flap surgery in 2020. Had radiation after mastectomy and implant failure. The recovery was not too bad. I was able to return to my regular activities at the gym. Did notice some weakness on that side when swimming and certain exercises but overall not much.
I did not like the bulky feeling under my arm. When I asked my PS about it I was told it usually decreases but not always. Severe capsular contraction set in about 8 weeks post op for me.
I had an expander placed during the surgery. At that point I decided to get DIEP surgery. I think the radiation damage was just too much for my body to be able to have an implant. I didn’t want to continue dealing with capsular contraction issues. Had DIEP surgery in 2021 and really happy with results.

thank you for answering I had an abdominal reconstruction so Diep is not an option for me hoping latissimus Dorsi myocutanious rotational flap is going to work and my recovery is okay from it my breast was radiated on so that is why am only implant will not work can I ask you were you had the plastic surgery done mine will be with sloan kettering in New York

I live in Wash state. Had the LD flap done at my local hospital. The PS had a great reputation. Did a lot of breast reconstruction. Think we both were surprised that I developed capsular contracture so soon after surgery. LD flap is recommended after radiation. I did travel to New Orleans for DIEP.

I recently had a bilateral mastectomy ( 3 weeks ago) with cancer diagnosis in both breast. I am not having to do chemo or radiation at this time, thank God!. My next step is to decide on implants or the stomach flap surgery. I have MS and am not sure of the implants but also am not sure if I can handle to flap surgery. I am 54 and decided to do reconstruction instead of stay flat. Any insight is appreciated.

Could you possibly try implants first? I noticed you have MS so understand your concern. Implants can be taken out if you don’t tolerate them. Has your PS discussed thoughts about implants with MS? You are not having radiation so that’s beneficial when thinking of implant reconstruction.
I had implant failure (had radiation) and had LD flap. Was not successful so had DIEP in 2021 at the age of 56.
DIEP is a major surgery but doable. The key (in my opinion) is to have a PS surgeon that has extensive experience in it. I read the DIEP boards here and lots online before I decided to finally have my surgery. It was 3 years after my mastectomies. I traveled to another state to do it. Everything went well. My radiated size is smaller despite having a revision surgery but I’m ok with it. I do like the natural, soft feeling.
