lago... shingles.. what is this exactly and they are goin to give you something for this .. and make you comfortable? I LOVE your hair and the color. I know that the aftermath is a challenge from chemo and eventually want to be a voice piece and speak on it in the future as it is sometimes a dark hole of what to expect and who to go to as most of the Drs we have are only dealing with the disease itself. Please keep me posted on this as I care !!!!

Happy birthday Mak!!!!Happy Easter ALL and will spring ever come?!!! Today was a pleasant day.

House staging, house bid could be coming this week and we have no house secured yet in AZ. My "dh retirement contract is in midst of being approved. The stress is off the charts and trying to stay focused on the moment . Work is actually an escape for me!!!! Life is good and know it is all for a better future.

Be well and will do my best to stayin touch!!!

Donna That's awesome regarding the bid. Of course I'll be so sorry to see you go.  We still haven't done lunch in the city!

Shingles is a virus (herpes simplex 2). It typically has outbreaks in older adults that have already had chicken pox (usually as kids). It's a rash with blisters that erupts on one side of the body usually torso (but not always) on a nerve path. It can be itchy and painful. If caught early with meds you can keep it from spreading and it heals faster. Anyone who has had chicken pox can get it as an adult. Usually people over 60 but also in people with compromised immune systems are susceptible. (You know like been on chemo!)

My family doctor happened to be on call last night so I got meds then. I will call and make an appointment to see him tomorrow or Tuesday. I'm sure I will have to cancel the colonoscopy and probably my PE appointments too. Shingles is contagious to people who have NOT had chicken pox only. I will call both places tomorrow and see if they want me to cancel.

I'm not in too much discomfort so far. I think with the meds is should start to get better tomorrow or Tuesday but like any virus/herpes it takes a while to go dormant again. I really don't know too much about it. I'm afraid of spreading it or making it worse. I don't know if it behaves like a cold sore would on your lip… cold sores are Herpes simplex I.

Lago - I had shingles the first time when my kids ere small maybe about 6- 8- & 10.  We were on vacation when I broke out and ended up in hospital ER in Ohio.  It spread all down my right arm & torso.  It took 2 to 3 weeks for the shingles to go away, but I had a reaction to the prednisone and it took about a month for the migranes to go away.  I have had 2 more small attacks over the years but just a 5 day pack of prednisone was enough to head it off each time.  It does not come back in the same spot you had it before.  2nd time was on the right hand.  Hope yours goes away quickly.

I don't know if you guys know but there is a vaccine for shingles they now give people over 60. I know at some point I'm going to ask about it. I'm not sure if I can get it being so young but I'm going to ask. They do say chemo ages you 10 years so I'm right on target if that's true. Tongue out

The CDC highly recommends this for people over 60.

Oh gosh.....I had not heard that chemo ages you 10 yrs.  Hmmm, well that will make me 76 as we speak.  I did know there was a vaccine.....I'll have to think on that a bit.  I think I have a session coming up with my Oncologist and will ask him.  I doubt it would hurt and would be nice to not have to have to worry about it.  Interesting that you can get this more than once.  I wonder if the successive outbreaks are not as harsh as the first time.  Anyway....I think it sounds like something I would definitely want to avoid. All these shots, wow.  I think I need a current flu shot as well.

Some sun here right now, but doubting it will be with us long.  More rain on the way up till Wednesday....two dry days and then two more of rain expected.  Too much water to suit me as I need some good blooming time, but have to go with the flow.

Hope you all have a fantastic day.

    Hugs, Jackie

I hope everyone had a pleasant Easter.  Ours was nice but rather uneventful.  No grandkids this year, although I have Easter baskets waiting for them in the hallway for whenever I get to see them.....and I must admit that I think they're pretty neat! (both the baskets and the grandkids)

It's drizzly and gloomy here this morning.  My back yard is saturated and the water in the creek behind the house has risen and is moving pretty fast.

Lago, I hope you can keep those shingles from spreading too much.  Yikes!  I've heard that they are pretty vicious.  Hugs to you.

Dawn, welcome to our thread.  Pop on again and tell us about yourself.  There's always room for another Illinois gal on this thread!

Jackie, I'm so glad that you survived the storns in your area with relatively little damage.  We watched some clips on the TV from down there and they were darn-right scary.

Marina....happy belated birthday!  I am so sorry that my wishes are late!  I'm glad you had a nice day!

Well, I need to get moving and get some things accomplished around here.  I hope everyone is off to a good week.

Jackie I don't think chemo ages most of us 10 years. It's such a general statement. Yes it puts stress on your body but I think it depends on your health and age to start with. A woman who is 40 that goes into chemo-pause can be considered aged 10 years.

I do have a few more wrinkles but I can't say I feel like I aged 10 years. Maybe 1 year but that would be appearance only. Physically (except for this shingles crap) I feel the same age as before chemo. Tongue out

Rita I they have not spread since Saturday just look more red and blistery.

Lago... so sorry you are dealing shingles.  Isn't it "always something"!  Anyway, I did a little reserach a few weeks ago on the vaccine and it appeared to me that it was not recommended for anyone having gone through chemo or radiation, but I am going to ask my ONC about it when I see him next month.

DonnaDio... that is great news if you get an offer on your house so soon.  We have homes in our neighborhood that have been for sale for 3-4 years. Hate to see you go  though.

We had a really nice Easter weekend.  Our DS and DIL from Charlotte surprised us and came a day early.  What a great time we had in spite of some bad weather late last week. We got in some long walks and long bike rides, trips to the health club.  On Saturday night, they treated us to an evening at the Old Town School of Folk Music in the Lincoln Square neigborhood in the city.  Great concert with "Crooked Still" and a "Mike and Ruthy".  They are both bluegrass bands.  Found a great little Mexican restaurant nearby for dinner prior to the concert.

And so... now the lymphedema in my right arm has flared up.  Just in time for our trip to Florida later this week.  Guess I will be wearing my sleeve and gauntlet 24/7 for a few days and hopefully get the arm back down.  I hate to go around in sleeveless dresses and shirts with unmatched pair of arms.  I am thinking that the big bike ride yesterday is probably the culprit.  I should have been wearing the sleeve then.  Darn it!

Other than that and the stiff joints (thanks,Femara), I don't feel 10 years older.  But I do feel 10 years wiser!  Everyone have a great week.

    Good morning all.

BJ- I did finally find a med onc, not Susan although she was very nice.  They probably know each other as mine is out of Advocate Lutheran.  I fell behind a bit on my Couch to 5K but today I did; 1/4 mile walk, 1 mile run, 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile run, 1/4 mile walk.  It is the first time I've done 1 mile since I started again, woot.

    Happy belated birthday makmak.

Lago- Boo on shingles, my dh had them and I thought they would postpone chemo but no.  Be well.

Started tamox on Good Friday, phssssstt.

Adey, good for you.  I think that is great that you worked out like that.

Joan, we need the name of the restaurant as DH and I go to theater in LS.  There are so many cool restaurants there.

I do not feel ten years older.  I often feel ten years wiser and on occasion I feel ten years wearier as I now see so much I never payed any attention to before  BC.  To be honest, there are many times I  wonder if I really ever did have cancer as it  was all such a blur, so quick and so odd that I would.

Rita, try to get together with family on Mother's Day. We had so much fun.  We had an Egg hunt and it was a riot watching them scramble for eggs.  Lila would see one and yell "EGG" and then would scramble (in the mud, I might add) to pick up her egg.  She was a pretty serious egg hunter yesterday.  My DD hosted and we had Bill's family too.  I was worried, but it turned out to be a happy day for all.

Off to walk in the indoor track.  Adey has me feeling guilty.

OK update on the shingles vaccine. Just saw my MD (to official confirm my diagnosis). He said it only works 50% of the time. He also said once you get shingles it's highly unlikely you will get it again.

So now I know why I have a slight pain in my back. Funny I just thought I pulled it out the other day doing stretches. According to my MD it looks like I have 2-3 nerves effected so I'm guessing that' what it is especially since it's on that side. At least I'm not too uncomfortable.

zap... the Mexican restauarant is called Los Nopales on Western Avenue. It is an easy 2 or 3 blocks from theater.  It is BYOB as there is a school next door.  We took our own bottle of wine and they charge a minimal corkage fee which is a much better deal than paying the usual restaurant mark-up on mediocre wines. I noticed others bringing in their own beers and margarita mix also which they graciously open and serve for you.  We all ordered something different and everything was excellent.

Oh Joan, I wish I lived closer.  That Mexican Restaurant sounds pretty neat.  We go to a dinner theatre that is a BYOB, too.  It's really a great idea!

Susan, I envy your time with your granddaughter.  That is so great that you could all be together and enjoy the childhood Easter egg hunt.  I really miss those types of things.  The little guys called and wished me a Happy Easter and Dave and I got a box of Easter goodies in the mail today, which was very thoughtful!  It's those memory-building moments with them that I miss.  Just keep doing all those wonderful things with her that you've been doing.

Lago, so glad they are not spreading on you and that you're not too uncomfortable.  It's just hard to get a good gal down, isn't it?  LOL  Hang in there!

Adey, I'm anxious to hear how you do on the Tamoxifin.  I bet you'll do just fine.

Joan, so sorry that the lymphedema has reared its ugly head again.  Hope you can get it under control so you can go and enjoy your vacation in the sun!

Well, I need to go try a few games of Jungle Jewels and see if I can get ahead of Susan! :-)

Did you get rain today, too, Jackie?  It drizzled most of the morning here, and then stopped during the afternoon but we had a short little shower about 6:00 tonight again and it doesn't look very promising for the rest of the evening. I hope everyone is staying dry!

Lago....thanks for the info on the shingles.  Maybe I can get by and get skipped.  I really did well for the most part with my blood counts etc. during chemo.  In fact, I never had a cold or a sniffle through the whole thing and still haven't.  So, maybe my immune system is as strong as it seemed to have been before chemo.  I think in the last 14 yrs. I've only had one small cold....lasted about 3 days and poof....gone.

We had a sort of rotten day here.  Rained all night and has rained off and on all day....though we did have a tiny bit of sun a couple of times through the day.  It surprised me.  Now its thundering and lighting again.  I think they said tomorrow would be dry....hope so.  I just am not liking this at all.....but the guy in charge just refuses to check with me.

Off and running.  I'll be checking in later.

    Hugs, Jackie

Jackie it might still be worth discussing with your MD. I too had great white counts on chemo. Haven't had a cold in 2 years. I think the last time I had the flu was in 2006, before that the late 90's although this year my onc made me get a flu shot. In my case I'm only 14 weeks out from my last chemo so my body I'm sure is still recovering some.

Bottom line is no matter how healthy we are as we age are immune system does weaken. Granted you're probably doing fine.

Thanks Lago, I will ask.  Never hurts to get a few questions answered along the way.  Hmm, I think I spoke rather lightly.  As it stands here people in low-lying areas are asked to evacuate immediately if they have not already.  Talk about a deluge.....it's not a nice thing going on out there.  We had to drive very slow coming home in order not to hydroplane through several blocks.  The water cannot get to the lake fast enough that is for sure.

Kaskaskia will probably end up out of its banks and I know all the creeks around here will as well.  Just hoping that all is fine tomorrow out toward the Shelter.  I said I would work and I just hope to get there.  Will be taking Dh to work first.  Anyway....hope most of you get a pass on this one.

Who stole the sun and where are they hiding it.  See you all in the morning.

    Hugs Jackie

    Hi again, ladies!

RitaJean asked me to introduce myself ... I'm down in the southern end of the state.  Been raining here for about a week.  We've had over a foot of rain during that time.  Dangerous stuff!  I'm ready to see the sun!

I received all treatments at STL.  Have great docs there!  I'm done with all my treatment but have lymphedema in both of my fingers.  I HATE IT!  I had cancer in my left breast, had the right side removed prophylatically.  Had sentinel nodes removed and wasn't supposed to get it.  GRRRR!!  It really sucks to get cancer but then to deal with lymphedema ... I've had a really had time with it ... but I'm learning to cope.  I was very active prior to bc and I want my life and my body back!  I know you all can relate!  It's good to meet some other Illinois ladies.  I'm in STL a lot if any of you are nearby and would like to do lunch sometime!

Hoping it dries out soon ....

HI dawn. Oh can I relate. I just saw my BS on Friday and he was shocked to see the compression sleeve/glove on my arm/hand. He again stated he was really surprised I got it. I'm just hoping I don't get it in the other arm where only the SNB was done! Do you have LE in both arms or just one? What's STL stand for?

I too am trying to get back into shape but of course you know how it goes. This first year there's always an appointment, a surgery, or something. This week it's shingles. I'm exercising but not back to my old self yet.

Well, I'm still here.  Rita, I am about 75 miles due East of St.Louis.  So a fairly easy drive if one wants to go there.  We don't go too often.  Sometimes to Brentwood to the Trader Joe's store there.  Hoping they favor us with one closer someday.

The storm really poured water down. Haven't been out so don't know how things are, but by this time....most of the water will have made its way to the lake.....I'm sure they have the dam gates open to spill as much as they can.  So far, all I can say is what a Spring.

Woke up with a sick dogie who must go to the Dr. at 9 O'clock so can't stay long.  Just hoping all if well with everyone.

By now Lago....you have probably figured out that STL is St. Louis----which is 75 miles west of me just over the river.

    Hugs, Jackie

I am 45 - 60  minutes east of St. Louis....right off of interstate 70. (depending on which area)

I'm looking for the Sunshine also.

Jackie...not sure how far a drive it is to Edwardsville from you but I heard rumour that they are getting a trader joe's....that would be great for us.  It is about 35 minutes to Edwardsville for me.

Hope the waters does not rise too high.    Amazed there were not more injuries reported with all the drastic weather lately.  Take care all!

Good morning Gals.  I see its busy here as usual.  I hope you are all doing well.  Lago I am so sorry to hear you have shingles.  My sister and mother both had it.  Very painful.

I have more questions??  I would like to know if any of you have HPOA?  I now have secondary.

I went to Doc for pain around the dorsi tram flap I had.  It still hurts.  He sent me for a bone scan It showed HPOA I was then sent for a PFT test and Pet scan.  The scan showed a couple spots my Lung doc wanted looked at and biopsied.  I saw the surgeon and he said there is nothing there.  Nothing to biopsy,  Then I went to the Rhumatologist who confirmed HPOA..

Buddy... I give up.  What is HPOA?

Wow, more rain.  Arrgh!  I so hope it does not follow us down to Florida later this week.  I am really looking forward to some sunshine.  When I was little, my mother always told me that the angels were washing the floors of heaven.  Pretty clean floors by now!

Think I am starting to get my lymphedema back down.  Been wearing the darn old sleeve and gauntlet, swimming, drinking lots of water and exercises.  Learned my lesson about doing those long walks.  Just have to keep my arms up.  Guess I will look a little funny walking down the trail!

Dawn-Hope..welcome to thread.  Hope you are getting your LE under control also.  I have always been really active too and I am still trying to figure out which activities aggravate LE and which ones may actually help.  You must be getting this rain deluge also.

Onward... I think you are done with rads??  Everyone try to enjoy the day, hopefully the sun will come out.... tomorrow, tomorrow, its only a day away.  You know, the "Annie" song.  I always get that stuck in my head on rainy days.

Joan I wear my sleeve/glove when I go walking and don't seem to have an issue… especially if it's hot and humid.
