worldwatcher so glad things have been going good for you.

Tink as busy as you have been you might need to keep those wings on

I hit the jackpot today.  A girl who used to work down the hallway from me cleaned out her closed and brought me a box of clothes.  I am now her size and since I have had to replace my wardrobe since I lost weight it was nice to have the clothes. She is a young woman and has reallly cute taste in clothes.

Sandee: good luck with the results from the GP and good luck with the waiting. I like what you said about perspective. A year and a half ago i got a phone call from someone i hadnt seen since architecture school. She said that she and her husband had just arrived here in Israel to be part of a clinical trial taking place in Jerusalem. He had been dx with ALS, Lou Gherig's disease, and they had heard that this could be their only hope. They knew no one in Israel and we have become very close since then. I think the trial has had limited success; perhaps slowed the deterioration somewhat, but it has still been painful to watch. He arrived almost symptom free and now can hardly move or speak. Yet he has a wonderful spirit! This has been so inspiring to me while going through this past year. Sometimes we joke about doctors, sometimes we talk seriously abouth challenges and faith. Seeing him, and his wife, who is an angel, has really helped me keep 'perspective.'

Sherryc, what kind of work do you do? Sounds fun.

Jo, i wasnt able to have a laproscopic or vaginal hysterectomy as the fibroid was too large. Had a TAH (abdominal.) Even with that the recovery really wasnt that hard. You have to take it easy, no lifting for a while. But the big dif between that and what we have been through w BC is that it is essentially mechanical. Once its done, its done. No meds afterward like tamoxifen. And im not sure how old you are but not having periods is really a pleasure. Best place for real women advice is www.hystersisters.com. Also, you are wise to take the time you need to consider this carefully. I had no time to think before my hysterectomy or my mx. I think thats one of the reasons i chose not to do immediate reconstruction. I knew i would want to be able to carefully consider options (which i am doing now) and that was the only thing that i didnt have to rush. Feel free to ask more questions if youd like.

Good weekend everyone. Going to be a hot one here but cant complain as the weather has been unseasonably cool til now. Plan to weed my vegetable garden...

    Love, Shari

Shari - Thanks for the encouraging words.  I am not going to rush into anything but on the other hand I just want to get this new problem taken care of as quickly as possible.  I have some things I want to do this summer and guess I will have to put them on hold - once again - for a little while.  I wanted to redo my kitchen - supposed to have done this last summer before BC dx.  I am not going to give up yet.  Still have some time to get it done.  Oh well, I am living by the 24 hour rule these days.

Jo. Now there's something I can really help you with; redesigning your kitchen! (i'm an architect, houses mostly...) Much more fun than planning surgery! We can dream and distract you while you're sitting in waiting rooms, mulling over medical options. Then we will switch over to cabinets styles. With pleasure...

Seriously, as long as you wont have to do any lifting you will feel good enough in about two weeks if you have to have the hyst. That leaves enough summer for the fun stuff. Good to focus on things like new kitchens...

    All the best, shari

Shari - My kitchen make over is going to be a new paint color, curtains, table runner, new crown moldings, new doors on the pantry & laundry room and new door frames to match the crown molding.  Can't afford new cabinets right now but am thinking about maybe painting them.  That is where I could use some help.  I live in a double wide model home and you know every thing is cheap - not even real wood.

I am determined to get this project done.  I have told myself repeatedly that cancer or this new issue is not going to stand in my way.  Constantly trying to be positive.

Shari my middle son in an architect in Seattle, WA.  I love looking at his work, he is amazing if I say so myself.  I am the secretary in the County Extension Office.  We run the 4-H program, and the Master Gardeners program.  We have an agricultural agent who does educational programming to farmers and ranch visits to give them advise.  We also have a Family and Consumer Science agent who deals with child care education, nutrional education we also get lots of calls on people wanting info on canning this time a year.  We are actually a part of the Texas A&M system called Texas AgriLife Extension.  So lot's to do and keep up with and I do have a great boss.

Tink I'll be with you on Thursday as well.

    Hi All,

Time for me to join this club.  I'm due to take my first tamoxifen pill today.  I can admit here that I am terrified.  I'm so afraid it will change me.  The thought of taking something that cuts off the effects of estrogen in my body... ugh!  All the areas that impacts.  That and fears of memory loss.  I have a very hectic highly detailed job and the thought of becoming foggy really scares me.  Oh well, figured it would take it and see what happens.  Any insights you can share would be wonderful!  I will also plan to start reading here.  This such a long-standing thread 464 pages.  Thanks for listening to my whine!

CarolineNC - Welcome to the TammiBabes.  Sorry we had to meet like this.  This is a great group of ladies.  We do tend to have fun along with way and get kinda crazy at times.  It is a great stress reducer.

We are all terrified when we took our first pill.  You may have to experiment and fnd the best time for you.  I started the first week with 10 mg and then went to 20 mg in a split dose for a couple of weeks.  Got tired of splitting the pills so just took the plunge and I now take my at breakfast with a glass of milk as I tend to get a bit nauseous at times.  I have had minor SEs  - warm flashes instead of raging ones.

I know others will come along and share their experiences with you.

This is a great place to hang out for comfort, support and some fun.

Caroline welcome to the thread.  Not everyone has problems maybe you will be lucky to be one of them.  Even if you do have SE's they will generally work themselves out over a few months.  I started out with SE's but now feel great.  I have been on Tammi for 4 1/2 months.

Jo and Tink my PS office just called and they moved me up to Tuesday instead of Thursday.  It is with a different Dr. but then again I did not know the first Dr when I made the appt.  The practice has a excellent reputation and all the PS's in the practice are suppose to be top notch.  Hope so.

Welcome Caroline, Jo and Sherry are right, this is a good place to come and feel connected to others who are in your shoes.  I've never had a question I posed on this thread that I didn't get feedback on, you can talk about whatever you like serious, or not.  I've been taking tmox since 12 Sept 10, I get occasional hot and cold flashes.  They usually aren't too bad anymore, except when they wake me up in the middle of the night (last night - crapola).  My toes cramp when I am pointing them doing yoga sometimes and I get funny pains in my legs which stay for a few days and then go.  If you get a side effect, let us know, somebody will have some wisdom for you and, just, that will calm you down. We get back to you a lot quicker than your Dr will. Innocent

Just thinking -- I remember my med onc telling me he did not want me splitting my Tamoxifen because it effected the peak release time -- of whatever it is that it does. I know that doesn't sound very professional but I don't exactly remember, it was awhile back for me. I've been on it for 8 months. Might be worth asking about though.

Sherry - Glad to hear your appt got moved up.  Will be thinking about you.

Well TammiBabes - I am scheduled for a hysteroscopy D&C tomorrow morning at 7:30.  I discussed this at length with my gyn and he said he could "clean out the plumbing" without having to some drastic like a hysterectomy.  He said I did not need it and with this procedure, the recovery time is much less - 1 to 2 days and I can resume my normal activities.  I am obviously going for it.  If this takes care of the problem then it will be well worth it.  I may be MIA tomorrow and I am sure everyone will understand.  I won't have pockets but if you gals squeeze together, I have two shoulders you could ride on.  LOL

Hi Caroline, and welcome.  These gals here are very helpful.  I really enjoyed lurking before I had to start taking the tamoxifen.    I was very frighted myself.  I was to the point of making myself sick to my stomach.  It was the day I started that I found I got myself worried over taking that it was just plain silly of me.  So I do know where your coming from on that one.  My SE have been mild.  The hot flashes for me are nasty, but I can deal with that.  I really havent noticed any other SE yet and I have taken it for a week, but I'll be fine.  Good luck.

Welcome, Caroline! This is a great thread to come to with any questions that come up while you're taking Tamoxifen - hopefully, you won't notice any difference at all. My SE's were very mild at the beginning, and now I don't notice anything. I hope it will be the same for you.

((jo)) - I'm so glad you're able to get that taken care of so soon! I hope you have a fast recovery and then get on to that kitchen!

I'm so glad to hear that! Have a nice dinner, go home, get up and get it over with. And then tell your body, "I'm through messing with you, so just behave!" I'll be thinking about you tomorrow, and look forward to hearing from you when you feel up to it.

ECT "Just thinking -- I remember my med onc telling me he did not want me splitting my Tamoxifen because it effected the peak release time -- of whatever it is that it does."

I followed my onc's advice. Due to a history of over-reaction to many drugs, I started with 5 mg, then 10 mg, then 15 mg a week apart and finally the 20 mg in two doses.

He had given me prescriptions for either the 10 mg or 20 mg dosages, and has since renewed for a year the prescription for 10 mg dosage.

He has had 35 years of experience with Tamoxifen with very good results, so I am trusting him on this.

As we well know, there are about as many opinions on treatment as there are oncologists.Laughing

     Caroline

You said:.."The thought of taking something that cuts off the effects of estrogen in my body... ugh!"

Not trying to be a smarty...but welcome to menopause, girl!  I had a horrible time with it for two solid years, mood swings, hot flashes, general craziness...but I got through it twenty years ago...all in all, when I see my daughters suffering with menstrual cramps, I'm thankful to be beyond them.

Here's hoping you will have an easier time of this and for a much shorter duration.  Remember, you are doing this FOR yourself and your future.  Good luck.

    phxsunshine

Wow!  Is there something in the air in Phoenix? I live here too.  In reading your post, you described to a T my SEs with Tami.

The strange thing I have noticed is that these SEs just kinda bounce around...one will hit for a day or two, then stop...then another will come along for a few days...

I've had the toe cramps for the past few nights...hard to sleep with them.

None of this has been really rough on me, but it really is no fun either...I believe it is worth it though.

Thanks to everyone for your responses to me...good luck to everyone and I wish you all a wonderful weekend.

Caroline- start slowly and split the dose so you take half inthe am and half in the pm. Tamoxifen did not affect my memory or concentration and i always have a lot of balls in the air...not to worry.

Shari- perspective indeed....your friend is fortunate to have you in the wings.

jo- good luck tomorrow and don't push it!

tink/sherry- tests next week? we will be with you...

ECT- do you remember if that was spliting the pill in half or taking it in 10mg pill form?

Had a great dinner out.  Have already taken off all my jewelry in preparation for tomorrow.  I didn't realize I wear so much - not I feel naked without it.  The only thing I get to keep on is my LE bracelet.  I showed it to the doctor today and he said by all means wear it for the surgery.  Should sleep pretty good tonight - had a busy Friday and am kinda tired right now.
