Tink, am glad you brought up the question about the melatonin. I have a bottle of 3 mg. Tried it once while on vacation, took a couple hours for it to take effect, then spent the next day drowsy all day. Tried it again a couple weeks ago, same results. But I'm not sure if just taking it once is a "good college try" or if there were other factors involved in my response. And I know that melatonin is probably good for breast cancer (has been shown in cell cultures to reduce invasiveness of breast cancer cells), but I know exactly what I will get from Ambien, how long it will take to fall asleep, and that I will be fully functional the next day. Still would like to switch off of it to melatonin or NOTHING, but haven't got the courage yet to face dealing with more unknows. Will be looking at other comments about experiences with melatonin. Thanks!

Paula - I would stick with the Gold Bond - I have used it and loved it. I do switch to Lubriderm every now and then and they both work wonders on my skin. I am kinda picky too - my hands and knees get so darn dry. I have used the Gold Bond Foot Cream on extra dry spots like my knee caps or on my cuticles. Softens them right up.

Hi all. sorry I have been absent for awhile...went to Newfoundland for a five day trip...icebergs, whales, dolphins, mountains and fjords all while talking non-stop with a galpal who has returned for the summer. Perfect!...and while I was away, got the call from my oncologist's nurse to say "you are officially menopausal so now we can start the new medication!"...uh....no???? I need info on the med that starts with an 'ari'...I know some of you have had bone aches and pains...Jo, I recall you swiched to tamoxifen...I told her I have to do research on it before ANYTHING else is going into this little body...finally feeling good and have adjusted to the heart meds and am lose Body mass with all the exercize...do not want to feel like crap again...(sorry...just realized I am whining/ranting)...I am sooo far behind on these posts!...so hope all are doing well...that the one year mammograms have gone well for those of us who started this game around the same time and I am sending hugs and will try to catch up!

Sandee - I did finally end up taking Tamox after 2 attempts with the AIs. I am doing well on it. It has reduced my hot flashes, but I have noticed my hair thinning. For that I am taking Biotin which is helping.
Just wanted to throw in that my mom was born in St John's, Newfoundland. I have never been there and hope to visit one day.

Tink I still take the melatonion and I notice that I get sleepy about 30 to 45 minutes after taking it. I usuallly take it and then read so when my eyes get heavy it is lights out.

Sherry - Are you taking Melatonin and amitriptyline? I stopped the melatonin - the amitriptyline does the trick for me - I try to take it at least 30 minutes before I go to bed and it is lights out when my head hits the pillow.

Sandee we missed you while you were gone glad you had a great time.
Paula if your skin gets really bad I have gone to usuing coconut oil. I buy it at the health food store. It is a solid but melts in your hands and i just rub it on. I started usuing it during radiation and I really like it. But it does smell like coconut but once you put it on the smell goes away. My skin just soaks it up and it makes your skin soft. And you can cook with it as well.

going for my blookwork this afternoon. I was so spoiled not having hot flashes. Last night I actually woke up sweating. I never sweat. So the last week my sleep has been very interrupted with hot flashes. At least I am able to go back to sleep quickly but I have noticed how it effects me during the day. I am yawning and tired. Stopped by my mothers and she starts complaining about how tired she is. I don't usually say anything, but I said I know what you mean I have not had a good night sleep in a week and I am exhausted. I think I took her by surprise that I really did not care how tired she was (mainly because I don't think she is as tired as she says she is) She has no clue for hot flashes as she went through the change overnight and not one SE. So she has no clue hot miserably hot flashes can be. I so want to go back to not having hot flashes.
tink how did the melatonin work for you?

Sherry - Good luck on the bloodwork. Hot flashes really suck. I don't have them at night anymore but do have them at different times during the day. It does not help that it is 100 + everyday. Can'w wait for winter to come - then I will complain about how cold it is - never satisfied I guess.

Sherry - luck on your blood work, girl. I empathize on the waking at night - even when you can get back to sleep - heck, it's like when the kids were little except we are older now and less able to tolerate it! dang! I wake up sweating, then the hot flash is over, then I freeze because I am all sweaty and wet! God must have a warped sense of humor! LOL

Tink, Sherry, Jo- hey hey...missed you all! Jo, I actually thought of you when I was in NFLD- remembered your saying a few months ago that your mom was from here...definitely a trip to take...a fair bit different form Texas! Different accent too:)
I did a bit of research last night and will go armed to my oncologist appointment on the 4th of October...until then, I am goin gto do my best not to sweat it ...to talk to my naturopath as well as there may be other options...just don't know what my numbers are without any medication you know as the plan was always for me to to rads and then tammi...so..we shall see. In the meant=while...hotflashes have been few and far between. I am warmer than I have ever been but fans are available and it means I only wore one sweashirt in newfoundland!...still found it too cold to do mor ethan swim for a few minutes though!
hugs to all

Got the bloodwork done and because of it being all the hormones they have to send it off so it will be next week before I get the results. Thinking I may take an ambien tonight and hope I will be so zapped that I don't wake up for the hotflash.
V you are right I think God does have a warped sence of humor when it comes to hot flashes. My church friends always say he likes a good laugh.
Tink good luck on the melatonion tonight. Just don't think about it and pop that pill

Sherry- got my blood results a week ago....officially menopausal! I celebrated with a hike up a mountain and then a glass of red wine with a galpal...now I can tell myself that I have more treatment options so if one does not work, there are others...
tink- take a good does of the melatonin. As my dr. says...if you are going to take it...take it and get the sleep you need:)

I have been on tamox for a couple of days now. I just find myself very tired,I only get up once at night to let the dog out and then go back to sleep. When I went to the doc on Tue my W blood count was low,So I don't know if it is that or only 3 weeks out of rads, Or just everything hitting me at once.Did this pill make any one very tired at first.I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend

momoftwo11 - I was very tired initially on Tami but wasn't sure if it was just because of lack of exercise (my TE had been removed just days prior). I am less tired now but still struggling b/c I wake at night due to the hot flashes.... but my tiredness abated with my exercise.
I have a question for the experts on the board - nothing tastes quite right to me anymore... I am not on chemo, just Tami.... so is this a side effect or just my over active imagination?
0 -
momoftwo - Some of your tiredness is definitely from rads. The rad fatigue can last up to 6 months or longer in some people. This is like everything else, each one of us reacts differently. Listen to your body and rest when it tells you. Your body will adjust to the Tami and you will be just fine.
V - Hard to tell what it is. Don't know how long you have been taking Tami but I have not heard of anyone having that happen to them. Give a few days and see what happens - if it is still bothersome, I would make an appt and see my MO. Hugs
TGIF - Tammi Babes!

momoftwo I cant help you to much with the tiredness, sorry. I didnt have to have the rads but Im sure Jo can help you on that one. Good Luck. We are going thru so many changes right now and its hard to pin point just where the blame goes.
V the strange tastes is new. I know I just dont have an appetite because of the Effexer. I just got done buying new pants a few months back and now I have to go get new ones again, geesh.
Well all its that time again for a WHACK WHACK WHACK hee hee hee!
