mccrimmon, you can ask me anything! I turned 41 in May. I had 6 months of chemo from January - July and stopped ovulating immediately. My last chemo was July 7th. My hair is a good inch long (maybe 1 1/4 inches). I could easily go topless, but I just can't do it! I try to muster up the courage, but I still wear my wig for work! How about you?

If my hair will just grow another 1.5 inches by Xmas so I can get extensions I will be happy. I will then feel back to normal I am sure. I have tried every trick to get it to grow faster; the only one left, which I have now started, is prayer!

MamaV, how do you know your chemopause is permanent? My MO on Wednesday gave me a prescription for Tamoxifen. She also told me I might think she's crazy, but I might get my period back in the next couple of years and I could still be fertile so should use birth control. I told her she was correct, I did think she was crazy. I have been in chemopause since April even though I finished chemo is July and am 48. The odds have to be 1 in 10000 at best, yet she tells me the risk of getting another uterine cancer is only 1% but seems to think it's likely I'll get pregnant. Please, be real.

We are having a friend come for a visit in the beginning of Dec, I'm just hoping and praying I've got enough hair to cover my scalp as she wants to visit epcot. I can't wear my wig on rides, it could fly off and hit some poor kid in the face, scar them for life.
Was thinking of trying to go topless this weekend at the epcot wine festival but were probably going to be posting pics on FB and I haven't told a few of my friends back home, don't want them to find out unexpectedly like that.

mccrimmon324, for my education, what is epcot?

Racy - if my hair grows another 1 1/2 inches by Christmas it'll be a Christmas miracle LOL!
kay - blood tests show I'm done (Gonadotropins (FSH) are well into the the post chemo level). I was perimenopausal before chemo so this just pushed me over the edge. I will continue to have tests every 3 months to keep an eye on it, but pretty sure I'm done!
I hear ya mccrimmon ... absolutely NO pics have been taken of me without my wig! That's why I'm thinking maybe I'll go topless after the holidays. Plus it's too darn cold in Chicago for super short hair! If it were summer, I think I would be topless by now!

Epcot Center, Disney World... We live in Florida, and I have never been there.

MamaV-
I've taken quite a few pics of my bald head for hair growth comparison, I've only shared with one fellow BC girl and my one friend. DH thinks I'm obsessing enough about my hair already without knowing I take several pics of my head almost daily. The other day as I was flipping thru the pics on my phone searching to show him something, he says to me, "Is that a pumpkin?" "Why did you take so many pictures of a pumpkin?" Nope, not a pumpkin, just my head. LOL

Anybody in Canada try "cold cap"?
I had read about it online from the states and it is supposed to stop/reduce hair loss while one is going through chemo. Not sure if it really works.0 -
oh, mccrimmon: the "pumpkin" comment got me laffing, for surr.. with you, not at you.. My DH mur, asked me "who is Uncle Fester? " when he saw the 1 st pic i took...3jays0

ok to weigh in on the chemopause
i stopped getting my period immediately after my first treatment and have not gotten in back. It's been a year now since my last period and I have been on tamoxifen since february.

mccrimmon - I ready that story a few days ago and laughed out loud - really!
Carrol - has your MO checked your hormone levels?
0 -
Speaking of hormone levels...Tamoxifen does nothing to lower hormone levels, right?
My line of thinking...Tamoxifen doesn't actually lower estrogen, it just blocks the effects of estrogen on breast tissue. It's an agonist on uterine tissue, hence the increased risk of uterine cancer.
Is that correct?
I can't figure out how to link a hair pic from Facebook to BCO. Anyone know why?0 -
Chemopause can be perminent… actually in my case it most likely is and that's why I'm on Anastrozole instead of Tamoxifen. The closer you are in age to menopause when you go through chemopause the less likely it will come back. I was already peri. BTW I am currently 49+1. My onc also knew when my mom and sister went through menopause and did test my esterial levels for several months.
I don't know if chemo would slow growth. I know that many of us on Herceptin experienced the slow growth. I'm still waiting for my nails to look normal. This woman in my building has slow growth hair but her nails look back to normal. She still has 2 herceptins to go (I finished early Sept.) I fear most of my finger nails will always be lifted granted some are worse than others. I also have those vertical ridges. My hair texture is still different but is getting a little better.

whatashocker.. Cold caps are used by some, but most likely no one on this hair thread. I, for one, chose NOT to use cold caps because it freezes your scalp, one location mets can go... so I was not willing to risk a scalp metastasis to save my hair... Its growing back and I have no regrets.

I'm not quite sure if I was peri- or post-menopausal prior to chemo... I honestly couldn't remember the last time I had a period. My oncologist chose to start me on Tamoxifen, then plans to switch me to one of the AI's in 2 or 3 years. When I asked him about just skipping the Tamox, he said if I'm NOT post-menopausal, the AI's could "wake up" my ovaries and start them producing more estrogen... I am (as of today!) 49...
MamaV, that's young for being completely through it! So much for the "Gail Model," huh?

Happy Birthday, Natalie!
McCrimmon - if you are worried about your wig flying off in Epcot, you might try double-sided tape. I have some special "heavy duty" tape made specifically for wearing your wig during swimming, tennis, other high-energy things where it might come off. I didn't have a problem with mine shifting at all. You can probably get some if you really want to wear your wig. I'm trying to think of what ride at Epcot would be fast enough to cause a problem. Maybe the Test Track.

I started chemo in march, my last period was in April. I am hoping that I never have another one lol! I am loving not dealing with that.

Hi ladies. I lurk here all the time, so I feel like I know you, but you don't know me. I'm 7 months PFC and my hair is only about 1 1/2 inched long. I'm still wearing a wig because it is sooo curly, It stands straight up on the top. I'm frustrated. I have 3 bald spots on my head. They biopsied one and thank goodness it wasn't cancer. It was lichenplanopilaris. It makes permanent bald spots! I'm getting steroid shots to my scalp to try to stop it. I'm wondering why all this is happening. Has anyone else ever had this?

Emma Watson is my inspiration to go ahead and go topless. If she chose a very short pixie cut then why should I be afraid to go with a very short hair cut when people will know why I am. I am 10 weeks since my last treatment and my hair is about an 1" long and has filled in. My husband asked me this week how much longer I am going to wear my wig. I had decided that Thanksgiving is the latest date, but if I like my hair before then I would stop then. My drab brown hair didn't make it look like much of a hair do so I have put in my own highlights - waiting for them now - hopefully my hair won't be a total mess in 30 minutes!

mammalou that stinks. I hope they can get that under control ASAP.
Ladies who are debating topless and short pixie cuts. Go for it. I still get compliments all the time on my hair. I still keep it very short… buzz the back and sides. That's why I haven't posted a hair update since last month. I did find that once I decided to go topless that coloring it made all the difference in the world. I had my stylist color it the day after I went topless.

So for all those with the facial peach fuzz, did anyone try a hair removal cream or is that a big no no? Laser?

mamaV she checked my hormone levels right before i started tamoxifen. I asked her if i should be taking aridimex now and she said i could take either one if i wanted. I am not sure how it works. I think what she had told me is that it used to be that everyone used to get aridimex and then tamoxifen came out and they discovered it was better for pre menopausal women. I am not having any side effects from it. I had a few minor things for a month or so after i started it but now i can't even tell im on it. I will be 47 next month. I am a year PFC. My last period was the week before my first chemo.0
-
Carrol2 I think you have that backwards. Everyone used to get Tamoxifen then the AIs (like Arimidex/Anastrozole) came out. The Als work better than Tamoxifen on postmenopausal women but don't work on premenopausal women at all. Tamoxifen works on postmenopausal women too just not quite as well as the AIs according to current data.
Tamoxifen has been around for a long time.
