FWIW, as an ER+ patient, I am avoiding things with parabens.  Some studies indicate parabens are estrogenic, and based on the more current research indicating recurrence is tied in part to circulating estrogen, I'm saying no until I hear they are truly not a threat.  http://www.insideprevention.org/2011/09/study-bpa-methylparaben-block-breast-cancer-drugs-san-francisco-chronicle-9132011.html

I also have friends who say you can't worry about everything, so it is a personal choice but did want to share the info.

Instead, I'm using rosemary oil and shampoos with Neem, which are good for the hair.

I am almost 19weeks pfc, It is all coming in and I am dying to color it! It is getting messy looking. Everyone loves it, or atleast they say they do! lol

I didn't wear a wig, I wore bandanas and buffs. I have two buffs if anyone wants them, since they are $20.  I loved them and would love to pass them on!!!!!!!!!

LtotheK what brands and where to you get your shampoos? Seems like everything I find has parabens in it.

Carrol2, I am going to order some shampoo from origins.  I think their products do not contain parabens.

The shampoo I am using at the moment is from Mattrix and it says no parabens.

Hi Carrol, I use cosmeticsdatabase.org to check, because even the overpriced Whole Foods stuff can have a lot of toxic junk in them!  The brand I'm currently loving is Theraneem Organix. It was on sale at my health food store and smells great.  European companies use a lot less paraben, but it isn't a foolproof method--Clarins, for instance, is a brand I used to love and now I really see it as a kind of toxic waste dump according to the database.  Kiss my Face, another shock.

Nature's Gate is an inexpensive and relatively non-toxic alternative.  However, the database indicates the risk level is up to 5 (out of 10) on some of their products.  I try to go for 4 or less.  I used to think LUSH was great, I've switched off of them--far more toxic than I realized.

Now that my hair is shorter and drier, I also wash my hair a lot less.  My skin and hair are thankful, I used to hang out in long, scalding showers for 30 minutes.

Truthfully, I just try to go simple and non-toxic.  I've not found much that "works" at growing hair faster than this Tamoxifen addled body is willing to do lately (which is SLOW and dull).  I don't believe the rosemary oil is doing a whit of good other than to make me feel like I'm doing something for my weird receding hairline pfc.

    Morning Ladies,

I'm 9 weeks PFC tommorrow and I look like I have a sparse very short buzz.  While decorating our house yesterday I couldn't take the heat so the scarf came off and I finished topless.  Unfortunately my neighbor came to say hello, noticed we were having issues getting our wreath above the garage so she had her 20 something grandson come and fix it for us.  I'm sort of relieved and mortified at the same time but I did it.  I'm hoping next week when we go to Universal Studio's I'm a bit less sparse and I plan on coloring with a temp color so I can go topless.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm still a week and a half away from my last chemo, but like a lot of ladies, I have been obsessed with my hair from day one - I am anxiously counting the days until my hair starts to grow again.... It's so nice to see so many photos of ladies with generous re-growth...  Gives me hope!  My hair hasn't completely fallen out (probably about 5% is still hanging on), and some of it continued to grow even after I had it buzzed.  However, what remains is white, dry, and crunchy.  Does anyone know if the remaining hair will fall out before the new growth begins?

mizmarie - my remaining hair did not fall out so once chemo was done I cut it off again.

All - my hairdresser gave me Bosley products to use to stimulate hair growth - 4 step system - shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner and scalp stimulant, she said to start it about 4 weeks PFC.  From what I can determine it does have a lot of ingredients but not parabens.  Hair is doing well - I am 6 months PFC now and have had 3 haircuts, still on Herceptin.  I am also taking Biotin daily.  It appears to be growing at my pre-chemo rate and is now starting to thicken, I have full scalp coverage.

    MizMarie,

I had less than 5% hang on but it was dry and crunchy too.  Mine did fall out as soon as the fuzz started, I'm only 9 weeks PFC but have a nice sparse buzz.  Just happy to see it growing.

Add me to the group whose eyebrows and eyelashes thin again at 5 months PFC.  What the heck?  So unfair!

Carrol, check out the "One'n'Only Argan Oil" line at Sally Beauty Supply. The shampoo conditioner and styling cream do not have parabens or phatlates in them. I have been using then for about 4 months now. I keep waiting for my hair to return to its normal self, then I will have to find a new shampoo for oily hair that does not have the parabens. The argan Oil products are labeled as moisturizing.

Saw my cousin this past week and she used to be a hairdresser.  She told me to take the Bioten, she said her hair was thinning and it helped her alot.  So nxt time I'm in town, I am going to look for it.

    MamaV,

I'm almost 9 weeks PFC and haven't seen any eyelash or eyebrow regrowth yet. I've lost all hope. Oh, I also have a baldish spot right at the front of my hairline. Generally, my hair regrowth has been pathetic. I feel your pain.

MamaV I know of two women here in Chicago (one lives in my building) that had slow hair growth. One was on herceptin the other wasn't. Some women just have slower growth. My hair was always fast growing. It did come in slower (I believe because of Herceptin) but a lot faster than some others. That's because my hair was always pretty fast growing.

BTW I wanted to say everyone is looking great. Bet you never knew you'd look so good with short hair.

thanks Lago and Cath.  My hair is about 1 1/4" at 5 months PFC so I think I'm right on track with that - keeping the wig on for now just to keep me warm here in the Chicago!

Eyelashes and brows came back full and quickly (eyelashes not quite as long as they used to be), then suddenly last week I noticed them thinning a little.  I do see new ones coming in though right away, so it must be a cyclical process!

    Everyone looks amazing!

Mamav, I think I must be on the same schedule as you. I am 4 months pfc and have a little less than an inch. Sorry yours is slow growing too, but it is comforting to know I am not the only one.

My dog that got shaved when my hair was starting to come back has a full body of hair. A good thing since winter is right around the corner, but he better stay out of my sight when i have a razor or scizzors in my hands.

I am still in the middle of chemo --#6 of 8 tomorrow and I was just noticing that my hair on my head is starting to grow.  Am I getting excited too soon???  I did DD taxol x4 and now am finishing with AC...will the stubbies fall out again from a diff med??  Just curious.

Ksmatthews...you are so beautiful!  Hoping to have a good coating when I go to Mexico in April.  Then I will not have to bother with hats and scarves.

ks - I am 20 weeks PFC too!  We have the same hair!  (Mine actually parts a little too!) I am going to find a way to put a pic up now so you guys can see.  Still wearing the wig for warmth though!
