Pumela my hair is shorter than yours when I need a haircut

Pam..are you on one of the AI's? They usually make you loose some hair. My brush is always full since i started it 31/2 years ago. You are lucky if you don't have that s/e.

Artsee, i am not right now but will be going back to taking them in Jan. I started with Arimidex, then Femera and then Tamoxifin and i had problems with all of them. But no hair thinning. I was hoping for some. lol In all seriousness i really need to get back on something and i think it's going to be Arimidex. Which one are you on?

Lago- Ha Ha Ha!!
You haven't posted your hair pics in awhile, so i can't tell. 0 -
pumela and tracie, wow your hair is long considering you have had cuts.
artsee, have you tried Nioxin to prevent shedding? In my experience it works for that.
I am going to buy a mini straightener at the post Christmas sales. (Mini is light to hold and for travelling too).0 -
I'll try and take a photo tomorrow.
artsee I've been on Anestrozole since March 1st. I'm hoping I don't start to lose.

Lago, Pumella and Carrol:It is so encouraging for me to hear how your hair came back thicker after the chemo. I am looking forward to see what happens to my hair during the next couple of months. Hopefully, it will come as thick as yours.May all of you have a blessed and prosperous 2012.0
-
I hope mine comes back thicker. My "old" hair was straight and thin. I am 11 weeks PFC and I have about a half an inch of hair. I can still see my scalp through it so I will keep my fingers crossed.
Merry Christmas to those so inclined!0 -
Morning Ladies, Hope Santa was good to everyone.
I had a great Christmas, actually surprised my husband with a watch he's wanted for years. It was awesome his face when he realized what it was.
I have one little gripe that I really need to vent about. My grandfather who has always been so opiniated told me he was glad to know that my hair was so short because of chemo and not because I chose to cut it like this. Because he didn't like it. Are you kiddding me???? Really!!!! My husband says to just let it go, he's old (90) and doesn't know any better but I've been dealing with it my whole life and that really hurt.
I've put the wig away and it's not coming back out so he'll have to deal with an ugly granddaughter

geegster, at 11 weeks you could still see my scalp, especially in the very front top, and I was worried it wasn't going to come in right. Tuesday will be 13 weeks PFC and my hubby said yesterday he thinks my hair is thicker than before chemo, so just give it a couple more weeks!

mccimmon most people don't like change… and as we get older we like it less. 90 yo I would let it go. Give it time. He'll get used to it. BTW my dad says things like that all the time thinking it's a compliment, you know the "Oh I don't think you gained that much weight" My dad has been doing that for decades and he's not even 80 (but close).

Thank you Lago, I guess I thought he would finally after an entire lifetime remember to keep his mouth shut but no such luck.

Racy..I've always been on Nioxin...even before BC. It's a great product and who knows maybe I'd have no hair if I didn't use it.:o
I'm a hairdresser, so I know what's out there, but it's frustrating. After the shower this morning the comb was full again. UGH!

mccrimmon, You are beautiful. I, too, have had my share of strange comments from elderly relatives.

BTW my dad said nothing about my hair when he saw me this summer when I was out to visit. He likes long hair. My mom now has her hair much shorter. She really liked mine… and I look just like her.

Mccrimmon - that was mean and hurtful. I don't know why old people think its ok to be rude (I know quite a few who do it all the time). You look beautiful, so ignore him.
My rude mum said "your short hair looks so much better than that ugly wig you've been wearing". Thanks mum!?! I thought I looked ok in the wig, but now you've destroyed that notion.0 -
Thank you ladies, I really wasn't posting for compliments but I do appreciate them!
Kiwimum, that actually made me laugh a little only because I can just picture my grandmother saying the same thing. I guess they don't mean to be that rude, they just don't know any better. I hope that one day we are all that old and rude. LOL

mccrimmon - something happens to folks when they get old - that internal censor that might keep them from saying something hurtful stops working! They say whatever random thought goes floating by in their mind. I was amazed at some of the stuff that came out of my Mom's mouth at 83 - a week before she died (and she was completely lucid) she told me as I was sitting at her bedside holding her hand, with my brother nowhere around as usual, that he was her favorite. I had to just let it go, but it was hard! Besides - ignore those kind of comments because you look awesome!

Three Weeks pfc and I have HAIR. It's thin and white, but it's HAIR! Thank you Santa!0 -
Why do parents and family members feel that it's OK to say hurtful things to loved ones? I've been trying to figure that out for a long time. My mother didn't like my short hair after chemo, she said wearing 2 rings on each hand looks cheap and why do I do that? She can't cook anymore, so I am a nice daughter and bring over soup...which she can eat with her 5 teeth. Well, proudly I said is it good? And she thought nothing of her response that was" no I don't like it". I consider myself a pretty darn good cook. That day I decided it was the last meal she was getting from me.
So why can't my brother do anything wrong? He's not even nice to her...and she knows it...but the son always comes out on top.
I'm 62 and my mother never lets go of the control she so loves.
Gee, I'm sorry I got off the Hair, Hair, Hair, subject here, but I got sucked into it by YOU guys. Thanks ...it felt good.

Yes some old people really do lose their filter.

I am always to thrilled to see everyone here! It is motivational.
I'm awfully sorry to hear about the hurtful comments. None of us needs it, and it does sometimes cut to the bone.
Amazing what a touchstone the hair is for everyone, not just us. We had a very relaxed holiday with my otherwise somewhat combative and competitive brother. The only irksome thing was his frankly very weird inquiries into my hair. Since chemo, the first thing out if his mouth is always, "Is that chemo, or what you are going for?" This time it was, "Is this how long it was because of chemo, or do you keep cutting it?" I dunno, he is somehow more hung up on it than I am. I find some men really has issues with short hair on women. He definitely does--I won't post his very xenophobic comments about short hair and women here. It's embarrassing to me I am related to someone who would say the strange and hurtful things he has.
Anyway, life would certainly be easier to get on with if folks were as comfortable with this all as I am. I also am really bored with the head tilt, goopy-eyed, "Oh, you look good, I hope you feel good." Heck, it's nearly a distant memory, and if ya'd been that concerned, a periodic check in seems more genuine than the sidelong glances!

Saw some family members for the first time since shedding the wig - my BIL walks into my MIL's house, takes one look at me, and say's "Hey you forgot something." Wanted to punch him in the face!

MamaV, you should have punched him in the face!

artsee: What makes Nioxin work?

did all of you use regular shampoo during and after chemo? I have been using baby shampoo, because the hair is so fine. When is it OK to start using regular shampoo?

Back when I lost my hair and was wearing my wig for the first time, trying to forget and act normal, my mother said to my father as we met up with him (he was in the hospital), "So, what do you think of Betsy's hair?" I tried to explain to her that I did not want her drawing attention to me... I am not sure she got the message... YESTERDAY, (and now this is after a lot of reconstructive surgery), she asks my husband in front of my children and SIL "SO, what do you think of Betsy's new body?" I had just left the room, but had to 180 and again ask her not to do that. I don't understand how she does not know that is inappropriate and not the kind of attention I want. hmmmm..... she is 80, but this is just my mom... 80, 70, 40.. she is just like that.... but I love her to death... unfiltered or not.

Mama and McCrimmon and bdavis you should post those comments on the "dumb questions/comments" thread. It amazes me what some people will say. They really need to get over themselves.

My mom has Alzheimer's and sometimes it's a blessing! No dumb questions coming from her, she probably doesn't remember what my hair looked like, although my wig was almost a carbon copy of my natural hair. She was worried when she saw me bald a couple times this summer (during a 90+ day out by the lake) because she knew enough about what was going on (wish she would have forgotten that part!) but now she sees it growing in and she sees that I'm OK.
I am very lucky that I have not had a single rude or thoughtless comment. As a matter of fact, my kids encouraged me to "rock" the bald look and everyone has been supportive as my hair has been making its return appearance. I did get the "chia mom" comment from my daughter, but we joke a lot in our family so it's ok!

I never got any mean comments, actually just really nice ones. The only thing I notices is when I was bald, wearing a scarf some people (mostly women) in my building ( live in high-rise) sort of ignored me in the elevator. I could tell they were uncomfortable and didn't know what to say. Once I went topless they were all chatty with me about how they loved my short hair.
It was fun when I posted pictures from my visit with my parents and old friends from high school on facebook at the end of August. So many people on facebook did not know anything about my diagnosis. I was getting the "love the pixie… did you decide to go short for the summer?" comments. No one seemed to notice the giant booby prizes I now have, or at least no one said anything.
