Kelly -- your posting made me laugh... I tried a mindfulness class, and it just didn't work very well for me.  I liked the idea, but while I was supposed to be clearing my mind during the class, I sort of cheated and created lists of errands and chores.... I think I left feeling  more stressed out!

It's a stupid stress reliever, but doing a crossword or a logic puzzle works better for stress relief (for me)  than anything else.  Plus, I still have vivid memories of how desperate I felt at diagnosis time....  and all these other daily stresses, like the laundry backing up, my dining room table having too much mail on it, my daughter getting to soccer practice late because of orchestra, ad nauseum....     well, they all seemed so trivial, and I just don't let that stuff bug me anymore.

Sorry Lisa.....I cannot help you....I had the opposite problems...I was shoveling Immodium into my system.

Little Violet is going from specialist to specialist as her heart is still racing.  They have no clue but are taking a wait and see approach.  Very nerve-wracking.  She also had a cataract so she sees the opthamologist but that apparently is not a concern.

    It sure is pretty here.

I got pleasure on the mindfulness remark as well, Kelly.  I went to a class and they had us just zone out for 60 seconds and then we wrote down all our thoughts.  I think I had twelve (all things I had to do),  while the others had one or two.  I was told I have a busy mind and would have to work on slowing things down.  Maybe "racing " is in the family.  I do have to say that I went to a meditation class at the Botanic Garden and I did have a wonderful experience.  I think it depends on who is leading you, the people you sit among, and your general state of mind.

Anyone watch the Oscars?  I have to see some of those movies!

Have a peaceful yet focused day, dear friends.

Lisa - I am so sorry you are having this issue!  I had that problem after every surgery and every chemo.  I started taking Senakot S and Docolex on the day of each chemo - and I continued taking them for a few days post chemo and I did not have that issue on my other chemos.  I had to break down and do an enema after my surgery and my first chemo.  My med onc yelled at me and said while going through chemo no enemas.  I didn't know that before I did it...I was completely desperate and in agony - it did work though.  I hope your problem has "passed" by now....hugs!

As far as the stress removal - for me it has been hard but I have managed it FINALLY!  I did quit my high stress job and I started yoga along with my regular workout routine.  I also have found that effexor has helped me chill out a lot.  I was completly a tightly wound, type A crazy lady before all of these changes.  I know not everyone can quit their job....I wish it was that easy for all of us.  Keep trying new things to remove the stress....it may just be something else that works for you.  Everyone is different.  I do believe stress played a role in my BC diagnosis.

I hope everyone has a great week!!!

mdg I didn't know that about the enema and chemo… I came very close to doing that after my 1st tx but the metamucil finally kicked in. Anesthesia can give you constipation too… but I knew that so I was already equipped with stool softeners… and it wasn't as bad as chemo chostipation.

Don't get me started about high stress jobs. I still blame my boss from 2005/2006 for my breast cancer.

    Zap hang in there.

Spunky I never could get into all that spiritual stuff. I'm not against it, it's just I'm such a non believe, not good with blind faith that it doesn't work for me. I rather be hyper anyway… but I'm not that either.

Hey an off topic question - We are trying to plan a long weekend trip for this summer - where do all of you Chicago gals go with your family for fun in the summer?  We are familiar with options in MI along the lake but thought we could check out somewhere different this year.  Since I am new here, I don't know where all the cool weekend getaway areas are. My son is 5 so something he can enjoy would be good.  DH and I love food and wine...something we can enjoy would be good too!  Thanks for any suggestions.

Lago - med onc said they were worried about any potential of damage to the colon/rectum while on chemo.  Glad I didn't know that before I did it.  I had been on stool softeners and laxitives for days and I was in agony so I sent my DH to the pharmacy at 3:30am!!!! That is desperation..........the worst.  It's making me cringe thinking of it.......blech!

MDG - The Wisconsin Dells area has some great resorts and water parks.

    --------------------------

ADEY - OMGoodness! Today mak and I went to Libertyville to get our driver's licenses updated  - how funny...both of ours are expiring about the same time. Afterward we had lunch at FIRKIN! Wow...deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelish! Thanks so much for sharing the info. Would have NEVER known about it. LOVED the lentil/hummus spread. I also had the  Panko breaded chicken with veggies. I can't wait to go back there.

    ---------------------------

LISA - When you're feeling better perhaps the northern girls can meet in Libertyville (see above post to ADEY.)

Love the pictures ladies.  Glad you were all able to get out, brave the weather and make the dinner.

Lisa, there is a lot of great tips here. I hope you find some relief soon.

Zap, I keep little Violet in my thoughts daily.

Lemon--agreed with the other f-- her. I would use Linda McCartney as an example, and tell her that you have had breast cancer and that her opinions are not only inaccurate, but demeaning and spitful.  Agreed that a healthy diet can help prevent, but doesn't mean that it is cure.

Got back from the Disney race and met up with another BCOer, Patoo, from the Daily Exercise thread.  It was a ton of fun, and I highly highly highly recommend RunDisney races for anyone looking to go to Disney with girlfriends, or at a discount with the family.  When you register for a RunDisney race, the hotel rooms, park hoppers, meal plans etc are all discounted.  The only negative thing is that these races start crazy early--like you have to be there by 5am early for a 5k and 3am for a half marathon. But oodles of fun.  They are easy run/walk races with lots of characters on the route that you stop at and take pictures with.  Lots of people walk these too.

Wow what a terrific time at Disney -- we had a couple of family vacations there, it is so much fun.  Maybe next year... I am on week four of couch to 5k..... today I ran more than I walked, and ouch am I sore!

Maria -- I second Door County... we vacation there every summer, it is quiet and beautiful.  Nice balance of active vacation, and wineries/restaurants, etc.  Also, the Lincoln Museum down in Springfield is nice for a quick weekend... not that long a drive, and the museum was a nice surprise...   extremely engaging.

Thanks for the recommendations ladies....I want to start planning our summer getaway.  I need something exciting to look forward to!

Please keep us updated on little Violet Zap.....we are all praying and sending postive vibes!

Corrine...I am going to have to look into a Disney run.  Considering a half marathon...am I nuts???  I have never done more than a 5k but I have been running 15 miles a week (5-6 miles on each run).  I am going to try to do 7 miles on Thursday.  I am also working on speeding up my running....still averaging 11 min miles.  I use to run SO much faster but that was 10 years ago.  I guess that makes a difference, hu???  I am no spring chicken anymore... :)

    MDG

You can do a half marathon.  I signed up to a Galloway running group that starts at the end of March, and I believe they do training for 5K, 10K, 10 mile, half and full marathons.  This is the run/walk program.  I currently run 5 min and then walk 1.  I am btw an 11 and 12 min mile. I don't think I will ever get much faster than this, nor do I really want to.  I am comfy at this clip.

Want to join me?  Smile They start on March 31 on the lakefront.

MDG I have never been to either of these but they might be worth checking out.

Milwaukee has a number of festivals including Summerfest (The World's Largest Music Festival). They say they have "family oriented entertainment but I'm not sure"

I have never been to the Illinois state fair but I know I used to enjoy  the Eastern States Exposition (The Big E). (States are small out east so they have one fair in MA for New England) . It was kind of tacky too but still fun. The Illinois one actually looks bigger and better than the Big E.

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile...it's the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him with his friendship.

Back from vacation and skimming to catch up here before I get ready to go back to work. bleh!

Katie - Hugs to you for getting surgery behind you.  Hope you're doing well with post-op recovery.

Zap - All the best to you and Baby Violet.  Hope you get some answers soon.

Love the dinner picture of everyone.  Sorry I had to miss it.  Next time!

mdg - Cedar Point is driveable and good family time.  Also, Galena is beautiful with lots of outdoorsy stuff to do.  There are quite a few waterpark/hotels just across the border in Wisconsin that are popular with families with young kids.

I'm resolved to start walking every evening now that all my excuses have run out.  The extra few pounds I just gained on vacation have pushed me over the edge!  Had a wonderful time away though... Gorgeous weather.  Here's a picture taken by my friend of the sunset over Miami as we were leaving port.

Spunky did to mean that pun.  Glad you are feeling better Lisa.  After my chemo I normally didn't eat for about a week....then when my cells started rebuilding good....crave tuna fish ( with celery, onions, raisins and apples  --- all the trimmings ) on toast and would continue to eat that until it was all gone.  I guess I liked poison -- chemo or mercury.  Anyway....Luigi's Ices are really good.  They are in the ice cream section of the store...like pop-sickles.

Forgot to say.....going to have a very warm, sunny day here after last night's storms.  Tornadoes around us but nothing in my neck of the woods.  Hope you are all ok......I think Chicago is going to be warm today as well.  Guess we are officially in tornado season now.  Prayers for everyone with that.
