Remembrance Day, often referred to as Poppy Day commemorates the sacrifice made by servicemen in times of war.
In the United Kingdom the day was first commemorated in 1919, when it was known as Armistice Day, with two minutes silence at 11am on 11th November. The day marked the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that brought World War One to an end in 1918. Its name was changed to Remembrance Day after World War Two. The day is also observed by other commonwealth countries.
In the United Kingdom two minutes silence is observed each year on the 11th November. On the second Sunday in November, Remembrance Sunday, special services are held and poppy wreaths laid at the Cenotaph in London and at war memorials in towns all over the country.
The poppy is used to symbolise to symbolise remembrance and in the United Kingdom the Royal British Legion sell poppies in the weeks prior to 11th November to raise money for servicemen and their families.
During World War One some of the most intense fighting took place in Flanders (west Belgium). Buildings, roads, fields, bushes and trees were destroyed. However, despite the devastation, poppies flowered each spring. Poppy seeds that had been buried for years were brought to the surface by the churned up mud and germinated.
John McCrae a Canadian fighting in the trenches in Flanders wrote a poem called 'In Flanders Fields'. The poem was published and the poppy was adopted as a symbol for those who had lost their lives in battle.
In Flanders Fields by John McCrae May 1915
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow

Now Bernie, Love all the Irish History, but promise me you will NOT test me on it when I see you in March! Promise??? I would never remember enough to fill a thimble. Was also impressed with our tour guide there as he talked almost non-stop on the tourbus all day, and had so much history, exact names, and dates, memorized.
Hi everyone, and bye again.....on the run, just stopped in for a quick one (now, now Pants, I know you aren't that quick, just a snort please, no no not dat white powder, oh heck I'll jest grab a beer!)....ChEARS!

Good afternoon, Loungettes! Got lots of picking up done in the bedroom, it actually looks good again! Yeah me! Got laundry load #4 going, with loads 2 and 3 on the line waving in the breeze. Now to find the kitchen table again. . .
Cammy-typical October weather right now. Temp up to 47, was down to 37 last night. Frost on the ground in places. Snow expected sometime next week, I think, but not a lot. Now if the wind would stop blowing for a while things would feel a lot warmer. . .
BBBBernie--too funny!
In Flanders Fields was posted by a friend of mine on facebook this morning. Great poem. Brings tears to my eyes every time I read it.

LOL Sue! I love Boston too, have a dear friend that lives there and I have visited her a couple of times. Yup, went to the Cheers place too. Outside of that is where i jumped into an actors car to get a pic of him. Cannot believe I wasn't shot. His sec guard was stunned. Also remember that place in Fanueil (sp?) Sq upstairs where you eat at big tables all together, and the waitresses are so rude on purpose...can't think of the name of that.
OHHHHHH love that Chinese shop Lara! FUnnneeee. Yup, I've been to Hong Kong and Bangkok too, loved them both. But not any hurry to go back to Thailand till they get their chit safe again! Didn't get to Phuket though. Will be strange having Turkey-Day dinner there though...wonder what we'll eat. We all love authentic asian food so much though, so will be in heaven. I also love to go to the chain fast food places to see what diff items they have in addition to the burgers, etc. Like McD in HI has saimin and haupia pie. And in HongKong we had a neat asian burger at Burger King I think it was.
Such nice rememberances for our Veterans. My late DH served in Vietnam (Green Beret)as did 2 of his brothers (at the same time), and 1 was wounded badly, and ended up blind and in a wheelchair, but he got his doctorate after he was blind, and had a successful career although in constant pain (they are all gone now). My DH now, was in the Air Force reserve and I was in the Army reserve. He also worked for the gov't for over 42 years. We aren't veterans though, and I am so thankful for those wonderfull servicepeople that serve on our soil as well as overseas and protect us!
Happy Hour time...raising my glass to those that have given the ultimate sacrifice!

Sue, Took a pic on the sidewalk with me and a young and good looking Doug Sheehan, here is what he looks like now...

ANd I jumped into the front seat of the car to take a pic of William Devane in the back seat! He is old now, this is what he looks like now

I'll have to look for the pics and scan them in. The look on William DeVane's face and his drivers face are priceless! I think this was in the early or mid 80's when Knots Landing was still on and one of my fav shows and they were both in it.

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France, and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure.

An American poet and war volunteer called Moina Michael read the poem, “In Flanders Fields”. It gave her the idea of using poppies to remember the dead but also to help the living at the same time.
Moina bought real poppies and gave them out to friends. She also sold some poppies and gave the money to surviving, needy ex-soldiers. The first official Poppy Day, organised by a charity called The Royal British Legion, was held in 1921 and continues to this day.
The Royal British Legion use money raised on Poppy Day and at other events through the year to help thousands of ex-soldiers and their families. They also organise festivals, parades and church services of Remembrance.
