Since my dad's birthday is next week, I used to travel to HI quite often before Dec 7. Years ago, there were so many veterans on the flights to HI, going over to participate in ceremonies of remembrance. Then a couple of yrs ago I think there were TWO veterans of WW11 on our flight. So sad, but the people serving that day (that are still living) are at least in their late 80's and 90's+. This is on our local news site.....

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) - More than 2,000 people are gathering at Pearl Harbor on Friday to mark the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack that killed thousands of people and launched the United States into World War II.

    Additional

Ceremonies get under way with a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the exact time the bombing began in 1941.

The crew of a Navy guided-missile destroyer will stand on deck while the ship passes the USS Arizona, a battleship that still lies in the harbor where it sank. Hawaii Air National Guard aircraft will fly overhead.

The Navy and National Park Service are hosting the ceremonies, which are being held in remembrance of the 2,390 service members and 49 civilians killed in the attack.

Friday events also will give special recognition to members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, who flew noncombat missions during World War II, and to Ray Emory, a 91-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor who has pushed to identify the remains of unknown servicemen.

Admiral Cecil Haney, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, is scheduled to give the keynote address. The ceremony will also include a Hawaiian blessing, songs played by the U.S. Pacific Fleet band and a rifle salute from the U.S. Marine Corps.

Kat that's beautiful what a horror for them and the USA--years of it. I was born when it was just ending so of course I read and heard all the horror stories cuz my uncles were in the service and other family and friends and how the women worked like men and that was unheard of those days and I heard the stories first hand--war stories--it was awful. A few years after all of this ended a German family moved right next door to my aunt and I was a kid and the adults were talking cuz he said he was in the war and then he said for ermany and I still remember thinkin why did we fight this war? He was so nice-I remember that so clearly--It was strange to me being a kid.

Welcome to our group Lizzie....lots of beer dwinkers here, likker dwinkers, vino dwinkers!

So touching Cami, I know....it was so confusing. When I went to Saipan around 1964, I noticed there were no Japanese there, because they had taken over that island during the war, so they still had bad feelings. Some of my CLOSEST friends in HI are Japanese, and we never had bad feelings after the war (well I wasn't born then), but through my growin up, it was ok. Some of their parents were interred in war camps, just cuz of their nationality. THEN in the late 60's Japanese economy was really good and ours was not, and they bought up SO much of Hawaii...sight unseen in  most cases, so it drove prices up tons. But when we go to Pearl Harbor, the Japanese tourists seem to show the most respect and lay flower leis in the water, etc. I grew up right above it, so we could see Pearl Harbor from the street.

On another note, boy this IS a sad day. PLEASE girls, pray really, really hard for our Dorothy. She had to go to the ER today and is on antibiotics....right now she is home (hopefully resting), but  can use heavy-duty prayers. She was able to send a couple of us emails, and Allison just by chance had called her, right when she was in the ER. Talk about good timing! I know you all love her a lot, and want her totally well, so thought you would want to know.

    Big Hugs for Dorothy....(((((Dorkie)))))

Katwinka Wahine de Machine, Kathy, and whatevah else ya wanna call me....as long as its good and involves Tenders!

Praying for Dotty that she gets better and is back in her rare form soonliest! (( Dorothy ))

Such as sad thing Kathy..I didnt even think that your perspective may come from a little bit of a more personal side of local memories and memorabelia and stories from your family.

Cami...you are so funny keeping Stella in line with tough love...lmao!!  Dorothy will be so happy to hear you are taking such good care of her.

Diary of a snow shoveler, probable location - North East

    December 8 - 6:00 PM

    It started to snow.
The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.
It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.
So romantic we felt like newlyweds again.
    I love snow!

    December 9
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.
    What a fantastic sight!
Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world?
Moving here was the best idea I've ever had!
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.
This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.
    What a perfect life!

    December 12
The sun has melted all our lovely snow.
    Such a disappointment!
My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas.
No snow on Christmas would be awful!
Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again
    I don't think that's possible.
Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

    December 14
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night.
    The temperature dropped to -20.
The cold makes everything sparkle so.
The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.
    This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.
I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way.
I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

    December 15

    20 inches forecast.
Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.
    Stocked the freezer.
The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out.
    I think that's silly.
We aren't in Alaska, after all.

    December 16
    Ice storm this morning.
Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt.
    Hurt like hell.
The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

    December 17
    Still way below freezing.
Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours.
I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.
Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.
Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.
God I hate it when she's right.
I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

    December 20
Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.
    More shoveling!
    Took all day.
The damn snowplow came by twice.
Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey.
    I think they're lying.
Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out.
Might have another shipment in March.
    I think they're lying.
Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me.
    I think he's lying.

    December 22

Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August.
Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss.
By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel.
Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.

    December 23
Only 2 inches of snow today
And it warmed up to 0.
The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning.
    What is she, nuts?!!
Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago?
She says she did but I think she's lying.

    December 24
6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.
Thought I was having a heart attack.
If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel.
I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

    December 25
    Merry freaking Christmas!
20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -Snowed in.
The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil.
    God, I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel.
The wife says I have a bad attitude.
    I think she's an idiot.
If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

    December 26
    Still snowed in.
Why the hell did I ever move here?
    It was all HER idea.
She's really getting on my nerves.

    December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

    December 28
    Warmed up to above -20.
    Still snowed in.
The BITCH is driving me crazy!!!

    December 29
    10 more inches.
Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in.
That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

    December 30
    Roof caved in.
I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass.
The wife went home to her mother.
    Nine more inches predicted.

    December 31
I set fire to what's left of the house.
    No more shoveling.

    January 8
    Feel so good.
I just love those little white pills they keep giving me.
Why am I tied to the bed?

OMG Hunky Guys with nothing on....lots of goodies to eat (the cookies, girls, the cookies!!)...geez its gettin hot in here!!

Cyn, Yeah, lots of family history when Pearl Harbor (and Kaneohe) was bombed. I actually taped my dad a few yrs ago, talking about it, and also taped my aunt (gmas sister, they both lived to be 101) talking about it. Things you never hear from books, etc. I never thought about it because ALL my friends had parents that had war stories, but now I realize how significant and personal it all is. I REALLY need to write it all down for my kids and g'kids, cause a lot is also in my mind (oh, oh, better write it down quickly!).

So many people sick. My DD1 has been sick since Monday, and my g'dau (her DD) is still sick, over a week now. My dad sounds well, but my mom still has a cough and doesn't feel so great yet. Glad I took my dad for a flu shot this wk (rather than wait till his dr appt Monday) as I think our state has been hit the worst so far, with the flu. Oops, just got an update....here are the worst states so far...

The latest flu update shows a big jump in the number of cases in early December. Now, eight states - Alabama, Alaska, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, and South Carolina - are reporting Widespread Activity.

Dorothy, I sure hope your dad does not have the flu! Think he should go to the dr?

OLara, Bama is short for Alabama! PLUS our fav team is The Crimson Tide, Alabama, also just called Bama. AND NOW they are playing in the championship SEC game again...they won last year, and LOTS of years really....college football, but when they win, it is for the whole country!

OK, Pau Hana time. AND tonight we are having lobstah tails again...yippeeee....and Mema's zucchini bread too!!!

    Hugssssssssssssssssssss,

    Kath

How is everyone doing on this Fried-Dey nite? Sure Q-U-I-E-T in the lounge tonight. Missing Dotty, but she needs to just rest and get well. Also, Sue is bizzy, and Alli is bizzy, and Lori was on a trip....and I am hoping Lynda is OK and didn't have to get her tummy drained again. And hoping Cami is not fighting the "D" again. Julie? NM? Bernie? (well it IS almost 3 ayem in the Emerald Isle), Chrissy? (prolly middle of the night too). Sure missing Jean Beans too!

Anyone wanna help me get the tree set up and decorated??? I am SO behind this year, always happens if I have a trip right before. Got SOME outdoor stuff up today, but jest so much more to do. Alli, I bet your house is all decorated to the hilt! And Cyn, you got all decorated too, good for you!

LEt's have a nightcap! Then have our pick of the Tenders/Wenches!!!!!

    Vodka Christmas Cake

Once again this year, I've had requests for my Vodka Christmas Cake recipe so here goes. Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year! (Made mine this morning!!!!) 1 cup sugar, half pound butter, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 cup water, 1 tsp. salt , 1 cup brown sugar, Lemon juice, 4 large eggs, Nuts, 1 bottle Vodka (preferably Smirnoff), 2 cups dried fruit, 4 cups self raising flour.

Sample a cup of Vodka to check quality.
Take a large bowl, check the Vodka again to be sure it is of the highest quality then Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point, it is best to make sure the Vodka is still OK. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 eggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a srewscriver Sample the Vodka to test for tonsisticity. Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something. Check the Vodka. Now shit shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or something. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window. Finish of the Vodka and wipe the counter with the cat.

    Merry....ummm, thingymajig.
