BBBB, interesting Christmas facts, I found 45 to be quite different and some funny names for Santa.

Cami, Stella is on the move? And no one knows where she is????

Well, it’s so so quiet in here, not much to comment on, but we can still have DOTD,

    THE MISTLETOE

    2 oz. Finlandia Mango
    1 oz. pomegranate juice
    Splash of triple sec
Shaken into a cocktail glass with a white or green sugar rim and a mint sprig to garnish

    CRACKERS

Tom Smith, a London sweet shop owner, invented the Christmas cracker. After spotting French bonbons wrapped in paper with a twist at each end in 1847, he sold similar sweets with a “love motto” inside. He then included a trinket and a bang. His Bangs of Expectation included gifts such as jewellery and miniature dolls. By 1900, he was selling 13 million a year

    MISTLETOE

Ancient druids believed mistletoe could cure illness, aid fertility and protect against witchcraft.

The tradition of kissing underneath mistletoe originates from Scandinavia. According to a Norse legend, Loki, an evil god, made an arrow out of mistletoe and used it to kill Balder, the sun god.

The mistletoe repented and was planted on a tree so it could do no more harm. It became a symbol of love.

    TURKEY

Before turkey took over, the popular Christmas dishes were goose and cockerel or, in the houses of the rich, peacock and swan. The turkey was introduced into Europe from the New World in the 15th and 16th Centuries and, because it was inexpensive and quick to fatten, it soon rose in popularity as a Christmas feast food.

    STOCKINGS

In the 12th Century, French nuns, inspired by the legend of St Nicholas – who gave gold to the poor – began leaving stockings full of fruit, including tangerines, and nuts at the houses of poor people. The toe of the stocking would contain an apple for good health and the heel a tangerine because they were very rare and expensive.

    PRESENTS

We did not always exchange gifts on Christmas Day. In Roman times, they waited until New Year’s Day to hand out their pressies. But, as Christianity spread, people started giving on Christmas Day – despite efforts by church leaders to outlaw the practice. And the Victorians brought a renewed vigour to the tradition of giving gifts on the actual day itself.

    TINSEL

The first mass-produced Christmas decoration, tinsel was made in Europe in the 1600s from sheets of silver alloy hammered until they were paper-thin, then cut into strips. It was designed to reflect the light from candles and fireplaces.

    BAUBLES

The custom of hanging fruit and baubles from green tree branches goes back to Roman times.

Then the decorations were used to symbolise the fruits of the Earth and the fiery sun.

    SANTA CLAUS

The red-suited Santa we all know was created in 1935, by Haddon Sundblo, for a Coca-Cola advertising campaign. In previous lives, he was a thinner and paler character based on a 4th century Turkish bishop, St Nicholas, who became the patron saint of children. It was in Holland, where he’s known as Sinterklaas, that he earned his reputation for giving away Christmas gifts.

    THE TREE

It was German evangelist Martin Luther who first decorated a fir tree in 1510. Queen Victoria’s German-born husband, Albert, brought the tradition of decorating a tree for Christmas to our shores in around 1840. Artificial trees were invented in the 1930s by the Addis Company, who manufactured them using spare machines in their toilet-brush factory.

    CAROL SINGING

The word ‘carol’ means dance or song of praise and joy and the first carols were pagan songs to celebrate the winter solstice. Carols were once sung during all four seasons but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has survived.

    HOLLY & IVY

Holly and Ivy have been used to decorate homes since the 9th century because they symbolise everlasting life. The holly represents Christ’s crown of thorns and the berries his blood.

Ivy was also thought to protect a house against drunkenness, while holly was said to keep witches and tax collectors away.

    MINCE PIES

Mince pies date back at least to medieval times – and possibly long before. They are descended from a huge pie, baked on Christmas Eve, containing chopped beef, suet, nuts, spices and fruit, of which whole, dried plums were an important constituent.

    CHRISTMAS PUD

Christmas pudding, also called plum pudding – although it contains no plums – originated as a 14th Century ‘porridge’ of beef, mutton, raisins, currants, prunes, wine and mixed spices. By the 17th century the meat had gone. The pudding is traditionally stirred from east to west in honour of the Three Wise Men. A 10p piece can be stirred into it to bring luck to the finder.

    CARDS

The first Christmas cards were sent in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole, head of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Too busy to write letters, he had an artist design 1,000 cards, illustrated with a festive scene on the front and printed with the greeting, “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You”.

Hi goils. . .Just checking in, Have had a rough couple of weeks dealing with the ascites (fluid) and have been in twice to have it drained (paracentisis). The first drain, they took out 5.7 liters, the 2nd time, 4.7 liters.

Just started a new chemo yesterday - Doxil. Hope this new one will help with the ascites.

    Hope everyone is ok.

Good morning, Loungettes!  Something rather unusual happened to me yesterday.  I had a light day at work, and so I picked up some visits for  a couple of co-workers who have pretty heavy case loads right now.  Both those nurses were grateful and said "thank you."  At the end of the day my boss called me up just to "thank you" too!  No other reason for that call.  I was so surprised!  Goes to show that I've found a great place to work and great people to work with.

CynCyn--love the history of black eyed peas, thanks for sharing!  I love all these traditions and the history behind them.

    ORLA--CREEPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!  But fun!

Cammy-don't blame you for passing on the fentanyl if it makes you feel like that.  Personally, I wouldn't mind feeling like that once in a while, but for more than an hour or so, not really.

DorKable--you got zebra colors on your hand?  I got squirming skin!  Very creepy, but kinda fun, too!  Is your disability really only 6% of your pay?  That's not worth bothering with even if you don't have pay any premiums for it!  Glad you could get your PCP to let you go back to work.  The weather has warmed up here, so no black ice issues for a while.  Supposed to get some snow beginning of next week, maybe.  Sigh.  Good by summer.

Wahine--Happy B-day to your Dad!  Hmm, the more I hear of this 50 shades thing, the more I think I need to read it.  Is it appropriate reading for a 53 year old virgin????????

BBBBernie--I remember the snowman!  He was TALL!!!!!  Love all the tidbits of info!

Goldie--I can't wait to try a mistletoe dwinky!  Looks and sounds so special!

Chrissy--I'm with you--sharsies?????  I've got a dusting of snow now, just enough to see on the ground.  Much of it got slushy then froze, but the roads are well cleared off now.

BEANIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!How dare the aliens not let you post on here!  Shame on them! BEANIE IS IN THE LOUNGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rakul--Glad the fluid levels are going down.  Praying the chemo works for you!

Princess Glitter Sizzle's DOTD is the BEANIE"S BACK

    2 oz Cachaca

    2 oz pomegranate juice

    1/2 whole quartered lime

    2 tsp sugar

Mix well, serve on the rocks.

Cyn, for some odd reason, I don’t think the mistletoe will be needed ;)

Lara, now that someone mentioned their skin swirling from what you posted,  I think I did see my skin do that too, but only for a minuscule of a second, which is why I didn’t think I saw anytiing.

Kathy, maybe we can send ChileBoy to OZ and grab then grab the poison.

BBBB, you get teacher of year award!

Dofey back to work and making doze big bucks. But take it easy goil. And I have not seen Stella. Cami said she was somewhere where it snowed? Such a sweet and funny welcome back for our Beans. But youse is alwaze funny.

LMAO at de Beans. Love the name of your new place Nanu Nanu Resort in Area 51. Leave it to you to come up with something clever.  So goot to see you (((((BEANS))))). Hoping to see more of you.

Lynda, thank you for checking in. We DO miss you. Praying for you that this new chemo works, damn you RB. F U R B! Please keep us updated and stop in when you can. (((((LYNDA)))))

Tanks for de hug Chrissy, we all needs doze, dey so nice and makes  one feel all warm and fuzzy.

Cami, have a super time with your GF and Joey. Look how special he is, to be taking two wonderful women out on a date. Have a souper fabulous time.

NM, that was beery nice of your co-workers and your boss. But even nicer of you to do that.  You made me giggle when you asked it 50 Shades was ap pro pai for a 53 yo virgin. Might make you want to change THAT status!!! Can’t say for sure, as I have not read it, but from what I hear……. And yet another healthy DOTD and a poyfect one at that for the welcoming back of our Beans.

Julie, physically ok but not mentally? No wonder you fit in her with us. Kidding aside, you ok? OMG, love the IV bags, too funny. Hook me up! And you too are a very special lady. We LOVE OUR NURSES!!!

LOL, Good cartoon, Lori. And what is it they say "A good man is hard to find", OR "A hard man is good to find"! LOL. I was going to say the SAME THING to NM, about how it might make her change her mind, if she read it! Thinking alike again, oh,oh!!!!

NM, SO thankful for your co-workers and boss, to actually THANK YOU for pitching in and helping them WOW. What a change from your last place of employment, and the one b4 that (See, we have a history together, all of us, now!).

Ooooooooh I love those IV's too, Julie! Hook me up!!!

Bernie, SO nice reading all that info you find! Are you decorating the Harley for Christmas? I have the wreaths that go on the front of a my car, but too much trouble to remember to turn it on and off (battery). I wonder if the newer ones hook up to the car battery somehow. ANYHOW, hope you are doing great!!! I'll get to see ya in about 3 months...WOOHOO!!!

Cami, Sounds like a blast with Joey and your GF.....lotsa fun, jest what you needed! Hoping the 'D' will go away for good, though.

Shoot, and I REALLY mean shoot....there is another damn (yup I said dat) shooting at an elem school, this one in a historic town in CT. Haven't heard yet on the casualties. That is so horrible.

Raku, How are you doing today???? Hopefully much better!

Beansie, see what a welcome you are getting, from us oldies and the newbies too???? You were sooooooo missed!!!! Love the name of your abode too!

Hugs to ALL, Hope everyone will have a good Fried-Dey! I am hoping to pick up my g'dau to look for her birthday gift, but they have ALL been sick, so am hoping she is ok today, to go out.

I can't find any of my recipes for my non-baked cookies---yes ladies I did hae recipes and On occasion I made something. But Les is going to make ting-a-lings (LOL) next week with Joey--that kid has to do eerything---he's getting a 1 carat--smokey quartz and a 1 carat fire opal as 2 of his presents--he's going to be so excited--he's been collecting gems and srone for 2 years and they are all in a neat case mostly all from Donna. When he sees the fire opal he's going to go crazy. I told u she spoils the ell out of him. and ustoo.

I can't believe Dork is at work--wow what a woman she is. I was thining maybe Dork meant to write 60%.  I got 80%--I've neer heard of 6%,

Is everyone ready for Christmas? hahaha---I order on line so I can do a bunch next week and Les can go anf finish up Joey for me so I'll just o to the Dollar store and get some boxes and stuff so that should be it.This year I'm very disorganized--ccuz that's one thing I do with complete control--so I'll prolly foret people this time around.

OK everyone hae a great day and feel better.
