Saw my radiation onc today for a followup. We looked at her book on me and discussed the latest studies re rads risk to the heart . I actually had face down tomotherapy rads and it occurred to me that I couldn't recall any of my fellow bc.orgers saying they had done so.

Anyone else have tomotherapy? Face down?

    Lol SpecialK,

Was it a NICE mustache?  Is that the only SE you had?  Did it help your muscles?

    LeeA,

I will have six weeks worth of radiation. My Onc said with grade 3 and 2.1cm tumor that he wants me to have radiation so I opted for whole breast instead of targeted to just the tumor site. I have a friend who went through this five years ago and she is in a trial for radiation only and no chemo. So far she is doing well.

The new avatar is my hair that I have been able to keep through the use of cold caps. I actually have 2 inches of new growth since starting treatment. The downside is have gray hair at the roots since I cannot color treat for several months past FC. I can use a color stick on the gray, but I figure it looks just fine for now. I have lost hair everywhere else, but I kept it on my head.

The use of Biotene worked for a day or two and that was about it so I don't see you lost anything by not using it. I wish you the best of luck moving forward and keep us posted on your decision with radiation.

tonlee - nice in terms of the quality of the mustache - or did it look good on me, which is it, lol?  I was less focused on the muscle question because I did not find that to be a problem at that point - I have really noticed that post-BC.  I was taking it for, ahem, other reasons but found it did nothing in that department, plus I grew the 'stache, so I stopped it.  Here is the kicker - my DH just had his physical on base - his testosterone is through the roof for his age - his doc was amazed.  Also, now that we eat differently all his labs are stellar - again, doc was amazed.  I convinced him to start lifting again because he seemed to gain and lose the same 10 lbs. - I gave him the metabolism after age 50 speech, so now he is seriously jacked, looks great, and has an excess of testosterone.  Then there is me...

  • Hi all,

Have been away on vacation as I am returning to work on May 1 (volunteer capacity, half days, to see if I have the stamina to eventually return full time).  Also have been going to physio to try to deal with the torn rotator cuff in my left shoulder---painful, result of BC treatments.

LeeA, I am so happy for you!!! Congrats on finishing the chemo part of your treatmentLaughing.

I am attaching a very interesting article about the role Vitamin D may play in enabling us gals taking Tamoxifen to metabolize it as well as we possibly can in the winter months (for us gals who live in cold climates):

Also, from another site link I am providing, those who wish can puruse the many interesting articles such as "Acupuncture eases Lymphedema in BC Patients"; "Chemoprevention of BC: Evidence of Broad Benefit"; "Tamoxifen: More is Better"; and, my favourite oneTongue Out, "Moderate Drinking Tied To Longer BC Survival":

Another busy day! Echocardiogram this morning and visit with radiation onco this afternoon. Great dr. Informative and personable. Will start radiation in September. Next week super full. Whew! Think I might rest up this weekend. (Plus visit with my grandson...best medicine there is.)

ashla, LOL, yes, I was very nervous/scared about chemotherapy!

gratitude, thanks for the link about acupuncture and lymphedema!  I'm going to click on the link after I finish this post.  I've had acupuncture for the past four weeks or so but don't have any needle sticks on the left arm.

On another note, my 85-year-old aunt called today.  She's a great lady.  She wanted to know how I was doing but I wanted to know how she was doing.  It turns out she wanted to have cataract surgery and they required a CAT scan.  They found a mass on her left breast (she said she knew it was there for quite some time but it had never gotten any larger) a mass on her left lung and three enlarged lymph nodes.  She says she's not going to do anything about it.  She rides her stationary bike ten miles a day and feels great and she's going to continue on doing what she has been doing.  Her daughter (my cousin) is fine with her decision.  She seems to be in good spirits and says she's had a good life.

ETA:  she is my dad's brother's wife so no blood connection when it comes to connecting the breast cancer dots.

    SpecialK,

Ugh.  That sounds like a recipe for ...er discomfort.

I don't know about the testosterone.  I'm going to pick some brains, do some more reading, and then make a decision.  Good to know about the moo-stash.  lol.  I don't have a lot of body hair..very blond and thin, so I doubt I could grow a credible one.

Welcome back Gratitude!  Missed ya :)

LeeA, I'm sorry about your aunt.  Please keep us posted.

You rocked chemo and indeed this whole process! Think you will come out the other side facing life with a new confidence .

  • Hello everyone,

I am a newbee to the group but I just read my path report and found out my .5cm idc was +++. The drs were suprised as they thought I was having a recurrence of DCIS. I had a double mastectomy and they found a small area that tested Her2+++. The good news is that this was found super early with no node involvement. I am not receiving chemo...only herceptin. Has anyone only had herceptin? Best wishes to everyone!

    LB,

Please keep us updated on your Herceptin progress.  Many of us have wondered about the herceptin only tx.  I don't know if anyone has received a full course of Herceptin only, there may be a couple....my brain....they'll chime in tho :)

Sorry about the recurrence.  Glad they caught it early.  Her2 is very aggressive.

Hi everyone!  Hope you're all doing well!

LeeA, so happy for you that you're done with the chemo part of this ordeal!

    Dana, hope ou're doing ok.

Gratitude, thanks for the Vitamin D article.

Specialk, lol - all I would need would be a mustache after all this other crap. Short hair AND a stache - lovely.

I've been cathcing up on all the research and helpful posts the last few days! Have any of you come across anything saying to lay off or limit coffee?

shore - it was one of the first things to grow back after chemo, lol!  I also had to shave my legs during chemo, but the hair on my head came back last, WTH?

    Shore,

I've read a lot about nutrition and there seems to be evidence on both sides of the debate.

    Moderation.  ~sigh

    Isn't that ALWAYS the way...lol

I am NOT moderate ... I drink a pot of coffee every single day.  It fits into two cups.  I have really fat coffee cups!

Coffee is my one remaining vice, but I do use coconut milk creamer.  I have given up too many things, I am not giving up my coffee.  Tonlee and I must have the same kind of coffee cups....

Karen and Dana,  Good luck in with your upcoming treatment/surgery.  This is doable!!!

Lee, I am so happy you are done with chemo!!  I remember the setbacks when you first began.  Thankfully, the worst is behind you now!!!

Gratitude, How are you doing with the tamoxifen?  If I recall correctly, you were worried about taking it.  I hope it is treating you well and that you don't have any side effects!

    Have a great weekend everyone!!

    Lbwagner69 Welcome.

I don't know the protocol for tumors so small but I do believe if you tumor is at least .5cm you get Herceptin. I was always under the understanding that they always did chemo & Herceptin together but things do change. Did they do an oncotype to decide no chemo for you?

I will tell you this after chemo we all did just Herceptin alone. I had little to no SE. Maybe a bit stiff and my hair grew a little slower.

Hi my friends...... I'm home from hospital I feel like a truck hit me but everything turned out good ... slight incident overnight kinda bled out of all my incisions..woke up soaking wet and thought I had a fever and the sweats...it was all blood...quick action by the nurses got me together and safe. Lots of pain right now...morphine kicked it in hospital...oxy/percocet not really working at home...but grateful to be here!

Yay DanaM! You made it .

You got to sleep in the hospital!? Geez I swear I was woken up every 3 hours. So the oxy not working. Sucks but maybe you'll have some sensation when you heal. But I found every day I felt so much better that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Hope you heal as fast as I did.

Tx Lago....I was at an ambulatory surgery center and I was the only one there overnight...so I had the entire staff to myself! Princess treatment. Home nurse comes tomorrow morning so I will ask about pain meds then.

I'm surprised they let you home without being sure you could manage the pain. I know they wouldn't let me home till my pain was managed…

Or that's what they said but my issue wasn't pain it was nausea from the anesthesia and probably the pain meds given during surgery. Once I was awake I never even used the pain pump, or a tylenol. My chest area I believe was fairly numb. It was the nodes that hurt. I found out I have a high tolerance to pain. Pain was one of the things I was most scared about. Ha all that worry for nothing.

But you'll see. In 2 days you will feel so much better. I'm not talking running marathons or cleaning house but you know what I mean. You'll be a bit more tired though. Body  healing sucks the energy out of ya. It's normal. Take naps as needed.

Dana, if your pain meds are not working, please call your doc to get something that works.  Its hard for the body to heal with pain and this is certainly something you don't need to be dealing with now.  Take care of your pain!

Dilaudid comes in pill form.  They sent my husband home with it when he was released from the hospital.
