Michelle: I can't address the issues you're having, but I will say that you have a special place in my heart simply because you share the same name as my 23 year old daughter.  She's been out of the country since January and I won't see her again until at least the end of September.  Our only contact is by email and a very occasional phone call.  I miss her terribly, but when I see your name it causes me to think of her with a smile on my face and a prayer in my heart (and sometimes a LOL Laughing).

Sweetandspe, I have to quote Alice here, that is Alice through the looking glass, "I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom take it".   Was that a Lewis Carrollton book? British? I know all the right things to do. However, making myself eat salad instead of burgers&fries, making myself exercise, ugh! I will be officially laying around for 2 wks. Surgery on July 1st. Take out the Mentors, put in the Natrelles after only 1 yr! Cut out the capsular contracture. I have GNC Lean Shake in the bottle. They were on special,3 boxes for $25,grand opening special. Anybody got Natrelle style 45? Hoping to get rid of Wendy's square burgers and implant round gadgets. ATT has their jet packs on special here in FL. Anybody looking for a new one? I had to get a new one,my Verizon one fried after only 1 and half yrs. Do MIFI packs have a short life?

Andrea, see if your PS can find a place where they put in the IV and you wake up dressed ready to go home. FL is routine in my area to do that. The nurses do the catheter and such while you are heavily sedated. Drink Cranberry juice when your Dr allows, real juice from the health store, not the cocktail with sugar in it and you will be fine. I am getting brave though, thinking of letting the PS do the nipples at her office under local anes. Anyone tried that?

Layla, I responded on the other thread as well.  I have Style 45s, 700 ccs.  They looked a bit like hamburger buns immediately post op, but they've definitely started to settle in.  They used to be in my armpits some but they've definitely moved in closer to the middle.  The PS says the swelling is just now starting to go down - I had my exchange May 16.  I know you've gone through the exchange surgery before so you know what to expect.

Layla2525, thanks for replying! I'm having my surgery at the same hospital I had my BMX. They did the catheter when I was under for that surgery, but I'll definitely mention it when I'm there again! Having it done while I'm conscious does not sound good! I'm hoping the anesthesiologist will give me a sedative before taking me in the operating room. That way I'll be out and not remember a thing till it's time to go home!

Layla, I have the style 45's in 800.

NEVER looked like hamburger buns on me! Lol. The shape is great. My PS did a good job. They look quite natural! It took me at least 6 weeks for the swelling to be gone enough to have a good idea of the final outcome. Even at 3 months out my PS said I still have a very small amount of swelling. It all takes time!!

Layla: I had 3 pieces of pizza, two huge breadsticks and a large glass of milk for dinner tonight, Pizza Hut pasta for lunch, and I turned my alarm off at 5:00 this morning and slept until 7am with no workout, glory of glories!  I fall off the fitness wagon just as often as I manage to stay on Smile.  Lucky for me I'm at least in good enough shape that I don't break something when I do fall off...lol!

Good evening! Thanks to 3 heavy duty anti-biotics, the infection that caused my seroma a few weeks ago is now cleared up. I will be having surgery tomorrow afternoon to hopefully replace the right side implant that was removed, or to place another TE to re-expand, if the pocket can no longer accommodate an implant. I will not know until after surgery, but I know my PS will do whatever she determines will give me the best outcome.

Tangles, so glad to hear your surgery went well!

    Hi ladies,

Had my exchange to Natrelle 410s yesterday. Got to the hospital at 9:30 for an 11:30 surgery. Took me back at 10, but did not go into OR until 12:45. Was done and awake in OR at 2:40. Was so happy I was looking down my gown as soon as I awoke ;)

I left the recovery area feeling great at 4:15 and was home by 5. Felt a bit sore, and tired, but felt really good. Once home, i had a bowl of wonton soup and ritz crackers and went up to bed after 8. I felt wired and took me many hours to go to sleep :).

I only have gauze and tape on the stitches at the bottom. No drains. No wrap. No bra. (is this normal?) So far the Foobs look good. Flatter then I expected, but I know from reading they will change. Overall they look really good...no more ripples and hard spots from the TE. The feel softer and that 24hr a day "I have a tight bra on" feeling seems to be gone. I have no idea if she used a 525 or 580. Guess I'll find out on Tuesday at my post op appt.

I took a pain killer before bed last night, not for pain, but to help me sleep since I have a hard time sleeping sitting up (have to for one week) and can't take any sleep aid for the first 24.

I am up now (since 3:00 am), and while I am not in excruciating pain, I can say my stitches and top muscle it/burn like crazy. More so on the right (cancer side) then left. I am assuming this is normal. My ribs are sore as well. I hate taking more pain meds, but may have to as it's a bit uncomfortable. How long until the burning/itching subsides?

Good luck to everyone with upcoming exchanges! And thank you to those that have been there and have shared their experiences. Love these boards and the wealth of info they provide!

Good luck Chi!  Hope all is going well and know that we look forward to hearing form you when you're up to it.

Momof5: I'm interested in the burning pain you're experiencing after the exchange.  That was a major problem for me after BMX and I had to have a change in pain meds to address it (BS determined it was nerve pain so needed a nerve pain med (Neurontin) instead of hydrocodone).  Not many others here ever seem to mention that sort of pain and I wondered if I might have a recurrence when I exchange in August.  I'll plan on talking to my BS prior to exchange to see what she recommends.  If she feels I may need it I'll have to start it a day or two before surgery to get it in my system and then taper off again sometime after.  YOu may want to inquire about the burning possibly being nerve pain and get a different med if necessary.

Hi.  I am three weeks out, exchange today.  I went off of pain killers a few days ago, but noticed some discomfort today.  Not sure if I lifted too much?  The 5# restriction is killing me as my laptop weighs more than that.  So I have not been entirely good about it.  Trying.

I had an easy exchange, in and out in 45 minutes.  The PS was thrilled.  I think it is going okay.

Called Vinny and they want 5 months after nipple reconstuction.  Ugh...this whole thing takes so long!  I am willing to travel there, for optimal success.

I am doing the whole recon, due to age of 50.  Feel like it is something I should do for myself.  I am a C now, was an A, so yes I can support the fact that men look at boobs.  All the time.  I never knew this before.

Hang in there all of you sisters.  This sucks.

Not-me, congrats on being 3 weeks out! Are you using OTC pain relievers? They help (especially the PM version). Fifty years young, of course you need to make you a priority. If you don't, who will? There are good days and bad, hoping for more good than bad for you.

Leah I hope your surgery went well. I am in a lot of pain. My left side is not too bad, but he did a lot of work to the right side and also had lymph nodes removed so this explains the extra pain on that side. I also have a drain which is pinching me. OUCH. This was not as easy as I thought it was going to be:-(

Oh I meant to add that I did not have drains with the exchange.  Also, the PS never talked about pockets.  Maybe I ask the wrong Qs...I am always worried about the restirctions more than anything.  We will get thru this.

Tangles, I'm sorry to hear you're in so much pain. Hopefully it won't last long. Why did your PS have to do a lot of pocket work on your right side? I had radiation, and will need extra work on that side, so I'm pretty nervous about it.

I hope tomorrow will be a better day for you.

MNSusan, thx for the info. hoping the foobs will look good after all we've been thru.

Momof5, I figured I would not wanna eat much after surg. I got some no salt veg soup to warm up. If I decide to milk it I will send fiance to China cafe for noodle soup.st

dulcigirl, we stay swollen that long? last surgery was last Aug so I kind of forgot a lot. However, was thrilled when after returning from various stores at which I could not find the bra the PS sent me to buy.....wow tucked in my underwear drawer was a hardly worn hooks down the front bra almost like the Walmart one she wanted me to get. This one I forgot I had from last yr. Hardly wore it but its nicer, had removable adjustable straps. She is gonna fit me into it 3 days after surg so I gotta bring it to the office. Last surg told me nothing except get a sports bra.

I had my exchange 2 weeks ago and am happy. I have always been incredibly assymetrical, and the doc put a small implant on my remaining breast (it figures the big one would get the damn cancer!!!)  They look good but I actually had to downsize the big one (RIP, lefty!) to make it even out, also after the radiation, my skin got funky. But - I went shopping and bought new bikinis! And they look fab - I'm 41 and for the first time in I don't know how long, I am perky.

So, my question is, and I'll ask this at my next appointment of course - but when do you know what size you are? I know it's probably too soon to get measured. Most of my old bras fit, differently, but they fit ok. I've never been measured and think it's probably a good idea. 6 months? A year? Tomorrow?

Also, I'm on the fence about the nipple reconstruction. I want something there, but do I want a fake nipple on my fake breast? Or do I want something symbolic? Of course, I'm worried that a doc wouldn't be doing the symbolic tattoo. I have plenty of tats, but something about going over that thin wall makes me nervous with a non-breast-medical-professional makes me worry that he'll poke a hole in my new girl!

As if cancer weren't awful and complicated enough, right?

But overall, I'm very happy. I'm happy to finally be rid of that awful expander. I can wear normal bras again, instead of the 3 that I found that fit well (Danskin - for anyone curious - they're actually really great and I still am wearing them now!  http://www.walmart.com/ip/14506173?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227000472236&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=13688430310&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=34444697350&veh=sem )  But it's nice that I don't have to have those thick racer back straps when I wear something a bit more feminine.

    And, I'm alive. Whew.

    Hello Ladies,

I have been a member on BCO for a few months now, but spend the majority of my time on the DIEP forum.

I had my BMX on April 1, 2013.  I was told almost immediately that I might have problems with my expander's because of thin skin, etc.  I woke up with expander's with nothing in them, and stayed that way until about 2 weeks ago, when all of a sudden my PS (who has me scheduled for DIEP on July 24, 2013) decides he is going to start filling my expander's because I have healed so well.  I have had two 50 cc fills, and have tiny little mounds now, and they are uncomfortable.  His theory is that the more skin he has to work with the better my DIEP results will be, but he did mention that maybe if the fills work out I could go back to the implant reconstruction idea.

Here are my issues, and maybe you guys can help me get some answers.  I have "iron bra" big time.  From the moment I woke up from my bmx I had it, and it stays the same, and now with the fills a little worse.  Is it the expander's that cause that feeling, or the alloderm, or both?  If I hang in there and do the expandsions can I expect that feeling to go away when I have my exchange?  I was small breasted at maybe a full size B cup, and don't want to go bigger. So, I assume I won't need many fills.  My biggest concern is the "iron bra" feeling.  It has to go away, and I know it does when you have DIEP, but does it ever go away with implant surgery?

Also, my exericise routine incorporates a lot of upper body exercises, and I have noticed how uncomfortable they are to do with expander's.  Does that get better with implants.  I know about the movement problems when you engage pecs, but can you still do a modest bench press, or a push-up, etc after exchange?

As I read your thread there seems to be a lot of issues with the implant surgery, but I would so like to avoid another major surgery.

Hi Goldie, I had the iron bra feeling after my BMX too, but it went away. I can't remember how long it took, maybe 2 months? I know it was gone by the time I started rads. The TE discomfort eased after I began my fills, and I only was filled to 340 on the cancer side and 310 on the other side. My exchange to implants is coming up on July 10. Personally, I would have preferred flap reconstruction, especially since I had radiation, but I don't have enough body fat to do it.

I had the iron bra thing too. It went away after a few months. Recently, I started wearing bras again after rads ( went without during), and I had that iron bra sensation again and couldn't for the life of me figure out why it returned. Finally dawned on me that most of my life I have been wearing underwire bras, thus no elastic on the front under my breasts. My new mastectomy bras have elastic. The elastic was driving me insane - wasn't used to it there! Different bras, different sensations! So glad I finally figured it out. I will be extremely glad to return to underwires again after exchange just to get rid of this suffocating sensation. LOL!

Bayoubabe, so even when you took the elastic front bras off you still felt the iron bra feeling, or just when you had them on?  I had my bmx 3 months ago and the feeling has gotten worse now that they started to fill expanders.  And, it never goes away no matter if I have nothing on, or not. Sometimes it feels worse when I have a sport bras on.  Actually, it all stinks.

In the months immediately following my surgery, I had the feeling all the time. I was expanded very fast and it took my skin a while to stretch and relax. Now my skin is just a bit sensitive to clothing/bras and I only feel it when wearing a bra.

I have been going to PT for several months though and this has helped tremendously. My therapist does a lot with massage on my scars, radiated side, etc. I have numerous exercises that I do almost every day that help stretch me out. If you have not been referred to PT, I strongly recommend it. Sanity saver for me!

Goldie:  I still have a slight iron bra feeling 6 months later but I've gotten so used to the TEs by now that I really don't notice it any longer.  You really can and do get used to them.  Mine got more and more comfortable the fuller they got. I'm over-expanded to 750cc in 600cc expanders and will exchange on August 7 to 750cc implants.

And I ditto what BayouBabe said above. The iron bra feeling was VERY uncomfortable for a good 3-4 months, and it was something that I just couldn't get away from at the time. My fills started out quite rapidly also (100cc at surgery and 2 weeks later started 100cc more each week for 3 weeks). Figured out it was going to fast and dropped to 50cc fills.  Took longer but that's OK.  I also started stretching as soon as I was able.  I've always been very flexible and the limited range of motion drove me absolutely crazy until enough healing took place to start gently getting back to normal.

I don't have any problem with upper body workouts at all.  It took a while to get back up to par but I'm doing fine.  Yes, the boobs look goofy when the pecs flex, but thank goodness they're not naked for the world to see the goofiness!  The flexing also feels different than before but again, that's something I've gotten accustomed to.  I fully expect that after I'm fully healed up from the exchange I'll be right back at it with no problems except getting back up to speed again.

Hope you get the best results possible regardless of the type of surgery you end up with Kiss

    Dear Sweetandspecial,

I guess there is a good reason for your screen name.  You are very sweet and special to take the time to answer me in such detail.  I really appreciate it.  I am hoping my iron bra goes away, or gets better too, because right now it is beyond bearable some days.

I definitely have found my range of motion comes back a little bit more each day, and I am assuming that just gets better with time.  The nurse at my PS office did say some women find that as expansion goes on you do feel better, which I found interesting, but you confirmed what she said.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer some of my fears.  It helps so much.

    Bayoubabe,

I have thought about PT and might have to do it even though I have a $40 co-pay for every visit.  I thought our insurance was good, but every time I turn around there is something else they don't cover, or I have a co-pay for, and it adds up!  I am off work now.  We never realized how much my little part-time job cushioned us, and I thought I was doing it just to keep myself busy.  Well....

I am wondering if I go through the breast clinic at my hospital if it I would have a co-pay because I met my out of pocket maximum for hospital stuff?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions.  It helps more than I can say.

Ladies, Welcome to the metal vest chapter of reconstruction! Unfortunately, most of us go through this chapter so you are not alone. If you read this thread from the beginning, you'll see that it's (unfortuantely) part of the process. i refer to them as devices of torture. However, that being said, rest assured it DOES go away! For me, immediate relief after exchange to implants. It's uncomfortable/painful after fill as the muscles, tissue, skin accomodate the adjustment. (It took us a while to grow our native boobs, this is the excellerated version). Venting and whining on these threads is allowed......

Goldie: My BMX was 11-5-12 and by the first part of December I was truly wondering how the 'F' I was ever going to make it several months through fills and then the wait until exchange.  Lots of crying and feeling rather hopelessCry......Then I found bc.org and all these lovely, wonderful, caring, sympathetic, beautiful women and my outlook totally turned around.  (a change in pain meds helped too Smile)

If you haven't already come across it you might want to check out the TE trouble topic.  That's the thread I found first and it truly saved me.
