ReneeinOH - remember to wait for the swelling to go down and the drop and fluff to occur. It is amazing how much mine have changed in just the one week since my exchange surgery.

Hi Ladies Im new to this thread but hoping to get some unformation Im scheduled to have a rt TE exchange/with fat transfer and uplift on non bc side in Oct and am petrified have had TE in now for 2yrs and have gotten used to it although its like a rock from radiation I had my consult but came out feeling like I forgot loads of questions like is it painful? Do they open the whole mx scar or just a small amt ? Do they use stiches or glue like I had on mx? Does the fat transfer hurt ? Do you need drains ? Are they really high up before they fluff and settle? And are the scars really bad on uplift side ? Sorry for all the questions but I always get nervous and forget to ask the important ones would apreciate any help thxs x

Summergirl1 - I will answer from my experience. It seems PS all do things a bit different. So call your PS nurse and ask questions for answers to how he/she does things.
My incisions are smaller, but along the same scars. They are closed with glue. I did not have drains, but know others did, and my PS was not sure until the actual surgery if I would have any. My implants looked wonderful from day one, and are continuing to drop and fluff (I am one week out from exchange.)
Fat grafting is a b$&?! Sorry, no other way to describe it. I am black and blue all over, have to wear an awful binder 24/7. However, I would do it over in a heart beat. It has softened the edges of my implants, gotten rid of the drop off on the one side, and seems to be helping my radiated side. Bruises definitely required pain meds and are still very sore. But I am expecting to look wonderful after things settle.0 -
Hello everyone. I'm not new to the site but I haven't been on this topic. I've been reading over the posts here and I have gotten a wealth of information. I had my BMX in May and found out this week that my exchange will be on Aug. 28th. I am looking forward to getting rid of the Turtle Shells. I am glad all those that went through exchanges recently seem to be doing well and for the most part are pleased.
Summergirl: I can't answer all of your questions, but my PS did tell me that when he puts the implants in that they will be up high, but they will drop and fluff. He said to give them from 3 to 6 months to completely settle. I think they use the same incisions as bmx but don't know if they cut the whole way. Some of these girls on here will be able to help you with that I'm sure.
I have one question. If I go with the same size implants as my TEs will they appear smaller or the same size? I have heard that the implant would be a little smaller and I do not want that. Has anyone found this to be true?0 -
ReneeinOhio--I was also single mx. Had implant on left 600cc and lift on right plus 120cc implant. I went in expecting a 500cc implant on mx side and lift only on native side. PS said afterwards that it just didn't look like enough boob on mx side so he just kept increasing. Then at one point he stopped and decided to lift native side, then went back to mx side and started going up again. He said I didn't look like I had a boob till he got to 600cc. Then my native side looked "sad" so he put in the smallest one he had on hand (120cc) and Voila! They matched. He said I actually had about 500cc removed at my mx so technically I am about 100cc bigger now and I can tell. It's not bad, just bigger. And the mx side looked ALOT bigger for a while. I'm almost 5 months out and it's finally settling in to match. I was wearing a 38B before (and I'm sure I was wearing the wrong size!) and now it looks like 34D might be what I end up with if I ever find a comfortable underwire. I do find that a bra will make a big difference in how big or how even you look so keep that in mind as well. As long as I wear a lined or padded type bra I'm very symmetrical, but the unlined ones show a big difference between the two. If you are on the picture forum, I have photos there. And keep in mind, if you do decide down the road to augment the native side, just know it's alot easier than going smaller on mx side but give yourself at least 6 months to know for sure.

Chimneymae--
My 600cc implant looks about the same size as my 500cc expander, just softer and more droopy!!

Chinneymae: I exchanged on Wednesday from 750cc TEs to 750cc high profile implants. The seem just a touch smaller to me than the TEs but I think it's just that it's a more 'relaxed' or softer look. The TEs are just so much more firm and rigid than the implants. I am happy with the look so far, good placement, projection, cleavage. I didn't have much swelling at all, probably because not much pocket work, and I had drain tubes which came out this morning. The photos my DH took today (3 days post-exchange) really look very similar to photos of me with the TEs.

Chinneymae: I had my exchange 8 days ago. I was expanded to 400ccRight/410ccLeft, and my implants are 440cc, so slightly bigger implants. I would say the volume looks about the same as the TE's, but yes much softer and more naturally shaped. And actually I measured my bustline with the TE's and just measured my new implant bustline, and I come up the same. Well YAY to that!

Thanks Sweetandspecial, lala1 and Rose63: I guess if I want to look the same as my TEs I should ask for a little larger implant. I've been seeing this a lot in posts so it seems to be consistent. I have my pre-op appt. on the 20th and I'll talk with him about it. You have been a big help. Being a big person, I don't want to look too small.

Sweetandspecial, how is the Arimidex doing for you? I started taking it in July. After about three weeks I could barely get up and down my joints were so sore and my energy level was practically zero. I stopped taking it about 4 days ago and I can already tell a difference. I'm thinking about splitting the pill in half and trying that. I just can't go five years like that.

Chinneymae: I started taking it early December 2012 and am doing pretty good with it now. I had some trigger thumb trouble for several months that now seems to have resolved itself. I had worse than usual fatigue for several months as well. I haven't slept well in years so a certain level of fatigue is normal for me but the Arimidex made it worse. That new 'if I sit down after dinner I won't get back up' kind of fatigue that I associate with Arimidex has gotten much, much better. I suppose it could be related to the season too (summer, more sun/daylight), we'll see when autumn/winter roll around again. I still don't sleep worth a sh*t but I don't think it's any worse than it was before.
I don't think I'm quite as mentally focused as I would normally be . Memory is not quite as sharp right now which is a pain because I'm studying for a project management certification
. As far as joint/bone/muscle pain goes the only thing I experience is some stiffness in my feet when I stand after being immobile for a time but that loosens up with just a few steps. For myself I think my body has now become adjusted enough to the drug that the initial acute reactions have pretty much settled down.
I certainly hope a lower dose or maybe a switch will help you. It's hard to look 5 years down the road when it hurts just to be you
. (((((((hugs)))))))0 -
Thanks, sweet, I'm just so skeptical of all this stuff. I read where some some have had no problems and some have had pure horror stories. I know we are all different. At my age I have my normal aches and pains to deal with. I sure don't need more. I tried to help my husband lay tile in our kitchen Friday and I couldn't get up after I got down on the floor and when I got on my knees it was completely unbearable and I got exhausted so quick. I just did this three years ago in our laundryroom and bathroom with no problem. It's just got me so distraught that I couldn't help him like I wanted to. "This gettin old is really gettin old!" as my dh always says.

Thanks to everyone for sharing great info.
Im wondering how the pain level was after the TE exhchange compared to the mx. I had quite a bit of pain after mx and am hoping the exchange will be much easier. Also what where restrictions after exchange? It sounds as if some of you had drains and others not. Is that just PS differences? I have a preop appt this week but am wondering how others did. I have a very physical job and am wondering what is realistic in regards to going back. I realize my PS will decide in the long run.
Thanks

What is "pocket work"?
0 -
Theresa - your implants will sit in a "pocket" under your pec muscle. Sometimes this pocket needs to be moved over, up or down, made larger or smaller, or scar tissue removed. Thus, "pocket" work!
0 -
Theresa33 My PS is telling me no lifting, pushing or pulling for at least 4 weeks depending on what she finds once she gets into the pocket. She thinks there is leaking and capsular contracture. I don't have my revision surgery scheduled yet. I thought that the exchange was a lot easier than the MX. I'm hoping that the revision goes as well as the exchange. It's been 19 years which means I'm a little older.....
I hope all goes well with your pre op. When is your exchange surgery scheduled for?0 -
Hi everyone, I am new to this...but here goes.....I just got my (HOPEFULLY) last expansion and I finish my chemo on August 14th...yayyyyy!!!! I was just wondering if anyone had spider-like veins across the mx scar....I guess from the tissue expansion. I just noticed them with the last expansion...and it was scary!

Teresa, I am staying home for a week to recuperate. No lifting over 5#, no housework, lifting in daily life for a few weeks. This is much easier than the MX. Some people do need drains, but I didn't (and most don't?). Because I feel better than last time, I have to remind myself I am still healing. I stopped taking pain meds today (had surgery Fri. a.m.), and seem to be doing OK without.

ReneeinOH I'm happy to hear things are going well for you!

Teresa: Compared to my pain level for the BMX/TE placement the exchange was a piece of cake. I haven't had anything that I would qualify as pain at all aside from the cotton-pickin, frickin, mother f'ing drain tube sites. I took one Norco when I got home Wednesday afternoon as a 'just in case' but didn't really need it. I had just a very minor amount of pocket work done, PS released a little more muscle underneath lefty so she would ride a little lower to match righty. He uses drain tubes as a standard with exchange just because it helps keep swelling to a minimum which means less pain and less pain means a more relaxed recovery. Tubes came out yesterday morning already. I'm off work for two weeks (desk job) and no driving for two weeks. I can walk as much as I want but no running for six weeks. As far as lifting he didn't give me a specific pound limit, he just said 'whatever's comfortable. If you over-do it, you'll know'. I'm just taking it really easy. I'm very familiar with my pecs from the workouts I do, so I pretty much know what I should and shouldn't be lifting, pulling, pushing, etc.
I did have a busy day today (church, funeral visitation and funeral, then dinner at a restaurant with the in-laws) and my chest feels a little tired, I think because I haven't been able to rest my arms like when I'm sitting in a chair or laying on the sofa.
Debralamb: Congratulations on the last filland upcoming end of chemo! Those are great milestones! I do have some stretch marks from the fill process but no spider veins. How long of a wait does your PS require before exchange? Mine requires 3-4 months.
ReneeinOH: I'm also glad you seem to be doing very well. And I agree, I feel pretty darn good and have to remember there's some important internal healing going on.
Chinneymae: All in all I'm feeling pretty fortunate these days that my SEs seem minor compared to some of the more painful and debilitating experiences you and others are having. Hang in there and if it's unbearable talk to your MO about switching to a different AI.

sweetandspecial: I see the ps this Tuesday, chemo on Wednesday. PS said he wanted to wait 6 to 8 weeks after last chemo to do the exchange. I am glad your pain has been tolerable! The drain lines were the most aggravating part of the mastectomy! I can't wait until my implants are in! They have got to be more comfortable than the expander!
0 -
Debralamb - congrats on last fill and chemo! Very good news! And, yes, the implants are so much more comfortable than TE! I gave my kids the longest hugs today - it was so nice not to have those stinky rock hard TE between us! Little slice of heaven!

So glad everyone with recent exchange surgery is doing well. I love my Sientra rounds and I didn't have any rippling for a while, until all the swelling went down at about five and a half weeks. I just have a bit on my R side on the far outside but it doesn't bother me at all. I think it's unrealistic to expect ZERO rippling. I'm very glad I don't have it in my cleavage area

My PS doesn't do fat grafting, but I wouldn't consider it anyway unless I suppose I had extreme issues--ouchie!
And, most of you can probably expect a wee-bit-of size reduction in implants after the swelling goes completely away...but it's really NOT much at all...;) I'm trying to cover/ answer a few concerns that have been raised here & ?'s asked of me in PM's on this site...:)
Also, Chi:
Regarding the hormonals, you might take a peek at the "not gonna taking hormone therapy" threads on this site...there's a study on NewsWeek's site & elsewhere that discusses/found that hormone therapy might not be necessary/of much benefit in early BC Stage 1 patients who are over a certain age...can't recall the exact age right now/ nor exact info. ..;)
*****Sooooo, are you ladies who are Going to the Squishy Side SOON ...next few weeks, getting excited!? OR WHAT!!?? LOL!
RunnerMom, TLR, & GULLY?

Sweetandspecial......tell us how you really feel about those drain tubes~
I love it! I remember them and I called them my boob juice holders. I hated them also but love your discription far better than mine. Glad your doing so well~Debralamb.....happy for you I hope the rest of it goes well for you! I didn't have the spider viens so I have no idea what that is. Sorry~

Violet 1~ my PS mentioned fat graphing, I really haven't researched it yet but why are you and your PS against it? Just wondering trying to get as many opinions as possible before I make a decision. I've had these implants in for 19 years and they definitely need work. I have capsular contracture and probably leakage. Not sure which implants or size to go with. Any advice will be helpful and appreciated. Why did you choose the Sientra rounds? That is the one she showed me. The ones I have right now are round but I don't remember which brand they are.

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like the exchange should be easier than mx. Thank goodness!!!!
katlebbie- my surgery is Aug 28th.

I hear exchange is a piece of cake compard to mx. Don't worry.
Fat grafting can give a much more natural effect, and is sometimes worth the discomfort it might cause. It can smooth out edges of the implants, fill in divots, soften the clevage, and the best part is they take the fat from your tummy, or your thighs, which every you prefer, and it is almost always paid for my insurance. You can see before and afters on inline if you google it. It can make the difference between loving your new foobs, and not.

Hi
I am new. I had a bmx on april 1 2013, and had expanders placed at the time. I had some healing issues on the left non cancer side, or course, because BS scraped me close to the skin. After almost losing that expander, and going back into surgery to have the skin re-sutured, I am doing great. I have been having small expansions for about 2 months now, and I am at a whopping 310 cc on each side. This last expansion actually has made me feel like a have breasts again, which is awful, considering what they look like. My husband said they look like 1980'a porn boobs without nipples. Hey, it's better than nothing, even though they are tight and uncomfortable all the time. I was a full B at the time of my bmx, and that's all I really want to be again. My doc is saying he will expand me to about 475 to 500, and then he wants to put a textured teardrop 475 cc. There will be some fat grafting at exchange, or at a later date. Not sure yet.
I have been lurking, and I guess if I have gotten fairly well into the TE phase I might be out of the woods for more complications, but it seems like some of you guys breeze through this, and other's have so many problems. Right now I can say it's the iron bra that kills me, but I have been massaging with bio oil twice a day, and I don't know if it helps the tightness, but it sure seems to have helped my scars a lot! I love that stuff.
Anyway, wanted to introduce myself as my time for exchange gets closer, and I am really needing to talk to other's going through the same thing.
Thanks

So glad everyone is doing well with their recovery.
Violet, I'm excited but anxious. I spent the weekend cleaning and getting everything in the house in order. I even pressure washed sidewalks outside. Trying to stay busy to keep my mind off thing. I work full time so that will help this week.0 -
Welcome Ritamarie60: I don't know if you've visited the "Implant Sizing 101" site yet, but it is filled with a wealth of informataion about implants. The person that started the site is Whippetmom (Deborah). She is very knowledgable and has helped a lot of us on here. You may want to check that site out as well. My exchange is in two weeks and I am really looking forward to losing these turtle shells.
Again I hate you have to be here, but we welcome we are all here for you.
