In terms of losing weight, I worked with a nutritionist who said that I had insulin resistance - leading to me having food cravings and being overweight. Her remedy was to put me on a "time restricted feeding" plan where I'm only allowed to eat during an 8 hour window in the day, and need to fast for the other 16 hours. When I eat, I try to eat healthy food, but don't deprive myself. Cravings have disapeared. I've lost 15 lbs. since April doing this. Nutritionist said that I needed to rest my pancreas and stop making excess insulin - which feeds cancer. In the past, I'd eat dinner at 6 p.m. and be hungry again at 8. Now, I eat at 6 p.m. and have nothing else until 10:30 the next morning and am not hungry.

Flavia,
I've done a lot of research on the weight loss topic...and tried several things....I think your nutritionist is right. Of all the things I've tried...just having a 12 hour window of "fasting" every 24 hours is the easiest change that actually gets results. As well as adding a fast day (water and green tea only) every week.
Though I can't follow any of that when I lift heavy (bulk phase). If I try to fast after a week of hard lifting, even for 12 hours, I get violently ill. That's a new thing since chemo cessation....I used to be able to fast anytime I wanted...now, er, not so much.

Hi everyone! I was on vacation last week and have been trying to catch-up, but I'm still on p 637.
Roadtrip (Okay - plane trip) to France? Sign me up! Love the movie /documentary idea.
Hi TwinMama! I plan to read your blog ASAP.
Question for everyone who had neo-adjuvant chemo and rads. How long after surgery did you start radiation? For family sanity I would like to wait until after school starts, but I'm getting mixed messages from my team about the timing. I'm 6 weeks post-BMX, and scheduled for at least one more fill this Tues. So 8 weeks (if we're talking 6-8 week start window) would be Aug. 22 and first day of school is Sept. 3 (so 12 days later).
Is waiting 12 more days that big of a deal?0 -
Whew. Finally caught up.
Cami - I just scared my husband because I started laughing so loudly at your restaurant / playground comment. (Reading in bed).
MarissaC - I'll second the vote to ask for new meds. I got Aloxi in my pre-meds on infusion days. Then used compazine before dinner that night and Ativan at bedtime (for two nights) and avoided the nausea. Hope you find something that works soon!
Also - if you're having a hard time with plain water, try iced fruit / herbal teas (caffeine-free). I loved wild berry zinger tea when I was pregnant. I also have a friend who recently introduced me to coconut water. It's a nice change of pace for hydration.

Cami, the pain was never what I was afraid of. It was losing a body part.
Karen, no under the circumstances, noon is not too early.
Flavia, I have always been one who snacked all day, or had lots of small meals. Is that bad? Ruh roh.

mckatherine - i was also told 6-8 week window to start rads. I would have a chat with your RO - there are studies about the efficacy of rads after a certain time period. Im sure they can advise you as to whether or not this is ok
i started myfitnesspal today and will take other suggestions on the 8hr window - makes sense since im sure my 10pm snacks are contributing to the problem. I have a wedding in a month and need to get into a dress from last yr that does not fit anymore!!!!

Roze,
The literature I read says night time snacking isn't a big deal and can even help you sleep (a small carb/protein snack of 150 calories).
However, in my experience this simply isn't true FOR ME. If I eat anything within 4 hours of bedtime...the next morning without exception, I am up a couple pounds (water sure, but still) and then the day after that (because I don't eat before bed) I weigh back to normal.
So it's not weight gain per say...but I find my evening weigh ins are always about 2-3 pounds heavier than my mornings unless I eat within 4 hours of bedtime then I start out at my evening weight.
So when I have an event coming up...I make sure I don't eat before bed for at least 7 days...and the day of the event, if it's a bathing suit event especially, I won't eat anything but small meals of protein/veggies.

tonlee - yes, if i am starving at bedtime i do have trouble sleeping -i guess the whole point is more calories expended than taken in and how you consume those calories doesnt really matter

Well I am taking a break from tamox for a month. Scared to but I need to know if my stiffness , hot flashes , no monthly, if it will come back or symptoms going away. I was told it can take up to a month to be out of the body. My doctor only oked me for 2 weeks but I read it can take a month to be out so 2 weeks would not do it. Anyway did any of you quit taking it? Or did any of you feel weak joints? stiffness? Feeling like i can't get out of be in the morning with out pain? feel like i'm 80 not 45 years old.

Ang: I'm on Arimidex and has similar symptoms. Next month will be 2 years for me and they have subsided considerably but now I'm starting with the hot spells; I won't call them flashes so perhaps it might just take you a bit longer for your body to adjust (or else we just get used to them). My stiffness is evident when sitting too long but goes away pretty quickly.

Ashla, thank you for that yoga blog. It was just beautiful. I need to go back to yoga. I hurt all over some days.
Twinmom, I went absolutely and utterly totally bald on Thanksgiving Day last year. It all just leapt right outta my head. It was slightly fascinating. I didn't lose my eyelashes and eyebrows until after chemo stopped. I lost my eyelashes twice so far, both times they all fell out at once. I couldn't figure out why my mascara wasn't working.
And don't get me started on having no nose hairs. I so appreciate those things now. I think I inhaled many a bug during chemo and I always had a bloody nose...
And Patin, how can you say not all people get all symptoms? I swear I sure did! I'm such a delicate flower

Hi ladies,
Today I finished my last Herceptin--YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
!!! I began chemo on July 27, 2012, and now, finally, August 12, 2013, the hospital visits will no longer be monthly parts of my life.Ashla, thanks very much for the August 10 posting from Science Daily site. Very exciting news!!
Nicky, my family were a bit premature in that they organized a party for me on Saturday, and I indulged, drinking a superb Cabernet, Firestone 2009. Had 3, 5 ounce glasses, and they all tasted soooooooooo delicious. Had a headache the next day, but it was worth it!!!! Made sure to have a toast to "Portia."
For those of you still in the treatment phase, prayers and positive thoughts are sent your way.

congrats on the last H - yeah!!!!!!
ang -Im one whose joint aches/pains have gotten worse the longer im on tamox - i think its a combo of tamox and the lupron to shut down my ovaries. i also feel 80 and im only 44. I am waiting for the results on the soft study to come out before i decide to stop the lupron.
tonlee i read an interesting article just after i posted about a study that was done with 1400 women. They were all on a 1400 calorie a day diet. Half had most calories during the day (600-700 just at breakfast alone) and the other half had most of the days calories at dinner. They all lost weight but the first group lost 2.5x more weight then the heavy dinner group. Interesting....
