Goutlaw, thinking of you and wishing you better days ahead. None of this is very fun.
Special K, glad you are felling better.
I went to a BC Conference in Philly on Friday. So much good information! I learned a lot, couldn't remember even more. Good thing they are going to have the video online! One quick thing I learned was that Her-2 has two evil sisters: Her-1 and Her-3. Of course I can't remember what that means or why it is important
But there are some amazing things that are in the works for the future!0 -
SpecialK -- I'm allergic to adhesives... unfortunately, it depends on the BRAND of strips, etc. So you may want to ask your dermatologist office to research on the brand ordered. I'm also allergic to the open edges of Telfa pads.... the edges that are sealed I have no problem with. But, for telfa strips and tapes, they make a liquid (not gel) benedryl that is tube with a sponge on the end... you can daub it on the edges of the tape. For me it slightly speeds up the removal of the steri-strips, but since I don't shower every day, I figure it evens out in the long run... hope this helps.0 -
6cats - thanks for that good info! This is a long standing allergy to tape, I am adhesive sensitive like you, so I am always looking for alternatives! I seem to be becoming more sensitive over time and it had been a while since I had steri-strips, so they took a chance. The good news is that because this is the dermatologist they understand this sensitivity better - I had issues throughout my BC treatment because I was dealing with surgeons!0 -
Special K- I also had a reaction to steri-strips. Turned into cellulitis resulting in IV antibiotics, week in hospital, etc. All that after I told them "adhesive allergies". They believe me now!
The only thing I have not had a reaction to is a product called Mepilex and a tape (by the same co) called Mepitac. Unfortunately, it is not to common. Although my dr. told me to tell the ER it is stocked in the burn cart so the nurses can get it, LOL. I always get a quizzical look after that! You can also order it online. Hope that helps.

moni - thanks - great info!0 -
Guess its not so surprising to add me to the skin reactions. LOL. When I had IV abx the fist time they changed out my needle a week after putting it in, my skin came off in parts and was red everywhere the tape was. They switched to Tegaderm the next week. I itched so bad I almost pulled out the freakin needle. The last week they switched to Mepilex. That worked. I can take tegadrem for short periods like a Couple of hours but when accessed for more than that they go to mepilex. You know, the REALLY expensive stuff!
Reactions to abx, adhesives, anesthesia. We are a real challenge to our doctors! LOL keep them on their toes. My PS said he like his feet flat on the ground and to STOP doing that other stuff! LOL.0 -
Pbrain-he is a CPA. But not really. Was semi-grandfathered without the academic prep. There are some ethical issues.....
Can relate to the adhesive issues--but mine are not near as bad thankfully. No band aides, no tape, no op site, no spray, some weird OR stuff (as a nurse I should know the name-but chemo brain sucked it away). Some of this is new with chemo. Another shout out to cancer.
Day 4 of second try of Femara. And the return of bone and joint pain. Weird nausea that should not happen.
Anyone have any tricks to help my hair not look like the hair of the dead? It is all of 1/2 to 4" long and dry as the proverbial bone despite oils, conditioners, the old beer trick. Know some estrogen would help.... Any suggestions? Am slathering my face with everything from Eucerin to baby oil. Not a fan of aging 10 years in 2.0 -
Susan, I would stay far away from a CPA with ethical issues! Hysterical!
My advice on hair--I received a sample in one of my department store online purchases of something called Caviar, shampoo and conditioner. I'm a shampoo-a-holic, so I gave it a try. It is fantastic for our post-chemo hair. I had the softest, most shiny hair I've ever have. I bought both the shampoo and conditioner on Sephora.com. It is expensive, but heck, my hair is so short, I think it will last for awhile :-)0 -
Pbrain. Will be making an online purchase soon. Not a Sephora in my town. Not anything really. Everything is 3 hours away.
Yeah-he was a prize. Did not learn how big of a prize until after we had been married a bit (yes major embarrassed-psych nurse indeed). The ethical issues-will be handy if he pulls anything during the property settlement. Then-when it is finished.... He is writing a book. Remember the author when Oprah had a book club--and he made up the story? Well seems to be the case here also. Or-he is a true case of multiple personality-which i wondered during our marriage. Either way.
Thanks for the recommendation!0 -
Interesting. I turn red under steristrips, as well, and it doesn't heal as fast where it stuck. Didn't realize this is so common. Fortunately it was over the scar where they took out my port, a year ago, so not a large area and no complications. Thanks for Mepilex/Mepitap suggestions. Hopefully I will never need to close a wound again!! Stay well!0 -
Today I go back to the derm and hopefully they have some different tape and some ideas. Things are marginally improved, but this is still pretty ugly. Thank goodness the incision didn't open - it is stitched underneath but it about 2" long with only a removable stitch at either end, so the middle was being held closed with the steri-strips.0 -
good luck specialk!0 -
good luck. Maybe hell just glue it together.0 -
Special K,
I hope it all gets better and they find an adhesive that works for you. I have been reading here quite a few of us have developed some kind of adhesive sensitivity. I never had an issue with bandaids or anything else. Until my first biopsy and steristrips and I had a reaction, then had a reaction to glue. This last time I got old fashion stitches and they closed well. I alsp saw I had a red reaction to where they placed the EKG leads....who knows what is going on with the drugs that may cause this.
Thanks for info re HER pos and neg. My surgeon explained today also, basically what you had told me. Just a hard concept to grasp that if it traveled to the node it somehow is now different.
Take care,
Vivian

Last Herceptin infusion tomorrow!!! I am so ready for this to be over! I hope MO will let me get the port out soon.
I went without the wig to the BC conference last week and it felt great. I don't have the guts to go topless to work or church yet, but hopefully soon. After almost 11 months of the wig I am getting tired of it, even though it is super easy.0 -
Hi everyone. I am new to the boards, but past the halfway point in chemo. Looking forward to connecting with you.

Bren58, Congrats on your last Herceptin tomorrow. Yay!!!

Special K- I hope your dermatologist can find something you're not allergic to. I've also developed crazy skin sensitivities and allergies to adhesives. My skin was on fire when I had my last picc line in, which took a couple of months to clear. And I've also apparently developed an allergy to ace bandages and coban self-adhesive tape. I never had these issues before chemo.0 -
Went to the derm today - healing well, no more stitches and I don't have to cover it, no tape and no new steri-strips. I had thought there was one stitch at each end, and I knew that the 2" incision was understitched in layers with dissolvable stitches. Well, it turns out that it was one long stitch that was tied at each end, so they clipped one end of and pulled it the entire length and out the other side - it was a bit of a sting! When I go back in a week for the next one, no steri-strips at all - he will stitch it completely externally. I was a bit surprised when he said the incision will be about as long as this one, that will end up being three 2" incisions in an area that is at most five inches by five inches! Can you say roadmap?
naiviv - I had adhesive sensitivity for many years preceding treatment for BC, but it seems to have gotten worse. Conversely, other allergies have waned. The allergist explained to me that allergic reactions come and go as you age. I developed an allergy in my 40's to things that lather - shampoo, bar soap, laundry soap - out of the blue!
bren - yay!!!0 -
SpecialK, no cover, no tape and no new steri-strips, wonderful! I hope it heals quickly.
Welcome Leanne and anyone else I missed lately! Glad you are half way through.0 -
Welcome Leanne. I have a pink wig-and a purple one. I occasionally wear them to work. I am dean of health at a small university-with a semi-stuffy campus other than health. We bring dogs to work (under the premise of therapy animals) are currently raising kittens in the EMS vehicle compound, and have cake for any excuse. So the dean with colored hair is a no-brainer! Love yours!
Special K. Can you use medical AKA super glue? For some reason I can use it just fine when band aides cause blisters galore.
Wednesday I have a 2 part nuclear stress test to see what else Herceptin has done to my heart. I do not remember how many MUGA scans, CTS, and MRIs I have had this year. But am sure I glow green.
Sleep well friends.0 -
bren - I am happy - just wish I didn't have to go back for another one next week!
susan - I was glued for my ALND with no issues even though the adhesive sensitivity from an epoxy resin allergy (had a drug and cosmetic panel allergy test about 10 years ago) so who knows? Since he will stitch externally on the next two I am not too concerned. Before the steri-strips were attached last week she did put something on the area - don't know if it was to help the strips stick better or what - at least this sensitivity is up in neon lights and I will be asking a lot of questions this time!
Hey Leanne - I am a Tampa girl too!0 -
Yay Bren! I admit I'm a bit jealous that you are finishing - I have five more. Don't be too eager to get rid of your port, don't forget the favour it is doing saving your veins. I had my quarterly MUGA scan last week and, even though I warned him about my tricky veins, for the first injection, the tech says "There, got it. Oh, maybe not, oh wait a minute, I did get it. Well, I think I got enough in..." Yeesh. I still have a big bruise and swollen forearm. I didn't know I shouldn't lift weights so when I did my workout the following day, I think I aggravated the whole thing. Oops. I hope it improves soon. I am applying ice for now...
Oh SpecialK, I'm glad you're healing up. Sounds like a big pain in the butt dealing with multiple incisions. That would drive me crazy not being able to reach them myself!
We dressed up for a Halloween party on Saturday - I think you'll agree, you've never seen a cuter batgirl

marlene - OMG - so adorable! I miss those days! It is driving me crazy not being able to reach the incision sites on my back - I actually bought a reptile feeding tweezer - they are about a foot long, so I could try to put bandages on. Nobody is ever home at my house - lol! I have to dangle the bandage, then back up to the wall and smoosh it so it sticks - ridiculous! I had to call my next-door neighbor the other day and ask her to put one on me - luckily we are good friends, she was home - but on her way out the door - and she came right over! Sorry to hear about your arm! Hope it un-swells quickly!0 -
speciak my neighbor has been called in to action sometimes too. Glad you didnt needore strips. My PS used exterior stitches on me too.
Welcome Leesnne. MARLINE SHES AFORABLE AND YOU LOOK PRETTY GOOD TOO! Bren I am hsppy gor you! I hope your hair comes on like gangbusters.
Much love to all.0 -
Hi everyone, I'm sorry I missed a lot but I was away for a couple of days.
Welcome to all the newbies, u will love this thread with so many caring and intelligent women who know so much (not me) but can explain what sounds complicated not so complicated.
Marlene I think that picture is so so adorable oh it's just fun to see. and u are the cutest Robin ever.
SpecialK u sound like things are coming along good-I'm happy for that.
I have no wisdom for anyone, but then again I never do---but I did go to my DD1 Halloween party as MAXINE so I really got my sarcasm out, but then again it was expected to come from her/my bad side.
Bren woopwoop for u.
I hope everyone has a better day today than yesterday always.0 -
