I had the plastic surgeon take my port out during a fat grafting surgery, so I don't know how they would have done it otherwise. But I agree, it felt like I was letting go of a security blanket.

My last chemo there was no fell, but I got a certificate. Got all teary eyed when the onc hugged me. That night I had planned an end of chemo dinner party. We had it at Capital Grille. There were 8 couples, and they put us in a private room. It as so nice. Then, they comped out some appetizers, and the entire staff signed a card. Special night.

fluff - nice on the dinner! Love Capital Grille - we had both kids high school grad dinners there. A really nice place for a group that size - that was about the same number we had also. DH and I had a nice dinner there to celebrate his retirement from active duty also.

Susan I didn't get to ring a bell either. They don't do that at my treatment center. And to be honest we still had all that herceptin to do so it was still every 3 weeks for 17 more tx. I was so stiff, watery eyed, flickering with finger and toenails killing me from lifting I was just so over chemo when it was finally done... that I really wasn't into a party. Still felt like crap 2 weeks later on my 50th birthday. Now so happy I'm not doing that anymore.

I did't get to ring the bell until after my last herceptin. All the nurses stood around and clapped and hugged me. But I must say I like SpecialK's jewelry idea! I wish I would have thought of that. I wonder if it's too late??? :)

Actually my onc gives her patients a pink Swarovski bracelet when they finish chemo. My NP makes them. I was surprised. I don't now if she still does this but my guess is yes. That is a lot of crystals!

A party! Thank you. This is much better than ringing anold bell!

The removal site kind of hurts this morning-like it did putting it in. Tolerable.

    Off to work.

Love to eachl Much love to eachl MuchL!

Mine did not have a bell either But all the nurses came out with the song playing celebration time come on. And they where all dancing and singing to the song. They also gave me a certificate of completion.  When I got in my car I cried so much that I actually made it. And the road that I was on was finally finished.  Less then 2 weeks later I got my port out in the office with just a local was done with in 20 minutes.

My last chemo was the only one my husband couldn't go to. He started a new job... really not a big deal. Well it snowed that day so I wasn't able to catch a cab. They were all filled by the time they reached my building. I ended up taking public (bus to train then switch to another train). I did take a cab home. The snow had melted but then turned to a thin sheet of ice. Got out of the cab and fell on my ass.

BTW I wouldn't drive to chemo because benadryl can make me spacy and emmend messed with my eyesight.

lago - funny that you took yourself to the last chemo - I did as well.  Our DD's dog escaped right as we were trying to leave - DH accidently left the door ajar out to the garage.  This dog thinks that once out it becomes a game of "keep away" which is scary because he will run into the street, or into the preserve - the preserve contains gators, snakes, coyotes, bobcats, some really horrific spiders, and one very large Florida panther.  We were responsible for him, as DD was away, so he had to stay until he could catch the dog.  I did drive myself (only 10 miles down the main road from our house) and when I got there and they took my BP it was a bit high (due to dog drama) so they also gave me Ativan in the pre-meds with the regular Tylenol, Benadryl and Decadron.  DH showed up about 90 minutes later having caught the bad dog, but I did drive myself home.  I didn't tell the nurses about that part!  Sorry about the fall though!  My DH fell at least once a year when we lived in upstate NY, usually on the sidewalk!

bren - it is never too late for jewelry!  I am actually wearing my "chemo is over" ring in my avatar pic but you can't see my hand.

SpecialK I live 5.5 miles from my treatment center... but this is city driving also in my hood people tend to drive illegally by talking on their phones! linky

lago - lol on the song! - yeah, DH let the dog out!!!  That dog is so crazy too, he thinks being free is a total blast so he makes the most of it!  It took DH, the neighbor and two gardeners to corral him.  The drivers here are ridiculous too - on the phone, making right turns from the left lane, weaving, falling asleep.  Tampa is one of the nation's top cities for vehicle accident insurance scam fraud because the laws are so flawed.  The lawyers offices are attached with the chiropractic offices!  I am not kidding!

specialK I like your jewelery idea, that give me another excuse to buy a nice one for myself.  Lago very nice of your NP to make a bracelet for her patients so thoughtful.

soriya - I stopped working as well, and had two kids in college during treatment, so I know what you mean!  I normally buy inexpensive jewelry - fun stuff, and let my DH buy the expensive things for birthdays or Christmas, but something about this ring made me buy it - it was very out of character for me!  I'll blame the chemo, lol!

Don't get me started on jewelry. Art fair season is coming up... granted I don't anticipate buying anything this year unless I get a job.

SpecialK-was that the same dog that raided your suitcase and ate your meds?

I took myself to and from all my chemo appts after the first one when I realized that I wasn't going to immediately die or start puking uncontrollably. I enjoyed the time to myself and not having to entertain someone while I sat there. Although the two nurses that I seemed to rotate between always planted in my chair to hang out. I didn't want to sit out in the main room, so whenever possible, they gave me a little private room. The one time I had to be in the main room, I was sick as a dog with a cold, sneezing, coughing, etc. I felt so bad that there were some really sick people around me that I kept the blanket practically up to my eyeballs so I wouldn't spread germs.

Lago-I would much rather have the bracelet than a certificate!

    Goutlaw

Hystersisters is another great support site for those facing hysterectomy! They were my "go to" place in '99 when I had mine.

    Congrats on finishing your rads!

jewelry - why didn't I think of that?!?

My PS is taking out my port during my exchange - one less procedure and hopefully less scarring that way.

All this talk about exercise is making me feel lazy!  I quit swimming during radiation, then had some moles removed so I couldn't swim after that.   I walked for a few weeks - but then it started snowing.  And now I have my exchange in a few weeks . . .   Always an excuse, right?  :(

McKatherine-I sparined my pcl and my it band on my knee last July. Then had foot surgery in January. I am just now starting to exercise again more than just a little pt. It is really hard to get motivated.

goutlaw so glad you got the opinion of 3 experts. Now you will be more confident in the decision.

McKatherine my port scar looks better than my BMX scars... Even my port surgeon (yup that's all he pretty much does although he does have breast surgery listed too) made a comment that my scars, under my arm pits should look more like the scar he did. It healed so well that he went back in through the same scar. Still looks great... granted I'm sure your PS will do an amazing job but most surgeons want to have nice looking scars.

goutlaw - yay!  Good luck with the upcoming surgery.
