Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

Chevy - are the tomatoes Cherokee Purple? A neighbor of mine grew those this year and they were wonderful. Great flavor & very 'meaty'.
0 -
Purple tomatoes OMH they're probably all bruised.
Dian Sorry if u took our banting back and forth wrong, it's usually my fault cuz everything I look at in my life I tend to make fun of it. So I too apologize for any thing I've said that might have offended you.
0 -
Minus.... Good MORNING! No, they are called "Indigo Rose".... I DO have a Cherokee Purple also, but kind of early for tomatoes on some of my plants. The BEST kind of tomato I have grown is "Julia Childs!" They are HUGE, and taste just right, and the skins are very thin....
I had seeds, and this Spring I just put some in a pot, covered them with more soil, and they came UP? I have them transferred into some huge pots, and they are really doing well...! No more trying to raise them in little trays, on a heat-mat, under a gro-light! Ha! That was more trouble than it was worth!

Cammi honey..... NOTHING is your fault.... Some people just mis-understand, and think we are serious, and they do not like when either Religion or Politics are talked about. If we have to THINK about everything we have said, and try and go back, and think "What did I SAY?" ..... then we shouldn't post anything.
Besides it was not you, it was ME.... I commented on your man of the church as being a "initials only" and at least I THINK that's what it was! But I don't want to be chastized for it again! Ha! Oh no wait.... I went back and tried to find out how I ruffled feathers... I said that about the guy with a family.... THIS is what I had said....
"Oh for God's sakes.... a PRIEST! Man that doesn't surprise me in the least! Good thing you were always with someone else! I almost choked when I first read your post... I thought you were KIDDING! "
I thought and thought, and thought I said something REALLY bad! So I won't worry now.... I just think that once in awhile, we can probably offend someone without even THINKING about it.... Like I told Jackie, I sometimes read other threads, but would NOT comment on them, if I didn't like what they were talking about... It is THEIR business if they want to talk Politics OR Religion, and if I don't like what they are saying, just don't READ there, or block their thread.
And no! Purple Tomatoes are great! They are NOT "bruised!" You have probably never even SEEN one, much less tasted one!
I also love Black Krim! Those of us in the know, KNOW tomatoes from TOMATOES....
They are usually sweeter, and don't taste like plastic like store-bought tomatoes do! THAT'S what you should do.... Get a big pot, fill it with potting mix, and go to a nursery of some sort, and buy a couple heirloom tomato plants! You will be happy! And keep it in the sun all day, and water it all the time! Boy, what kind of farmer ARE you? Don't know nothin'! 0 -
This is so funny! I copied it from another thread!

For, after all, put it as we may to ourselves, we are all of us from birth
to death guests at a table which we did not spread. The sun, the earth,
love, friends, our very breath are parts of the banquet. . . . Shall we think
of the day as a chance to come nearer to our host, and to find out something of
him who has fed us so long?
Rebecca Harding Davis0 -
Wow, all the talk to tomatoes. We have been able to purchase some here and for the life of me -- can't say just what the name was/is-- but do recall they were darkish - purple and the man did say heirloom. Just me thinking out loud, but I do think sometimes maybe even farmer's market type farmers go back to the "tried and true". Those Julia Child ( something else I didn't know ) tomatoes sound yummy too. I have grown a few ( we didn't get to have our garden this yr. ) when we were at our other address here at the lake, but not for a long time now.
Like most anyone here....as a kid we grabbed the salt shaker from the table and went out to the garden and grabbed a couple of tomatoes, and ate them right there. There just was something about a tomato, warmed from the sun....maybe a 'hint' of an earth/dirt smell still present though we knocked off any dirt, and the smell of green growth still noticeable from where you took the tomato from the plant/bush.....and it just tasted like heaven inn your hand. There was just this inner glow that life was good and that wonderful provisions were always in store for you if you took the time to enjoy some of the bounty.
Some things in childhood just won't go away and call me so grateful that they don't.
Blessings

Good Morning--Jackie u did bring back the time we used to do that and always used salt too. and they were so so good. And my mom (who never went in the garden) would always have me bring the strainer out and pic rasberries, well not many came in the house and I used to say not a lot out there and she believed me, there was always enough for the family, but there would have been more-Why would she trust me, when that was one of my favorites. And u'r right nothing was washed, my mom would wash like a madwoman yet most of us just ate anything from the garden, Well maybe not peppers and zucchini but fruits were there for the taking.
Oh Chevy I didn't want u to feel bad so I popped in, cuz I know this doesn't sound right but I didn't feel bad, we all enjoy our memories good or bad and we do mke fun of them every so often, why not they are ours and we shared them with each other--so they are open game for everyone and beside I was so blessed with having a great childhood which I didn't know at the time and I still have my insanities and quirks- so really it's a strange world how we all react to our world. And these threads have brought me lots of hardaches and lots of laughs--which is life in balance.

Thanks for the tomato notes. I'm so sad that our season here has been over for a couple of weeks. For awhile in May & early June I was eating 2 or 3 tomatoes for every meal. Who needs anything else!
Chevy - you might try Mexican Mini. I don't care for cherry tomatoes - too much skin for the meat to my taste. But these aren't any bigger than a pencil eraser and are SO sweet with fairly thin skin. I understand that you can just toss some of the tomatoes in the ground & they will seed and grow a new plant.

Loved the "Older Ladies" song. It reminded me of Menopause, the Musical. Friends and I saw it a couple of years ago. Funny.

The mix up in the eye glass prescription is numerous now, but not then. A friend was accused of malingering in the hospital and her family was told she was faking illness. She was sooo confused by that. Then the found there were two patients with the same name. Diagnoses corrected. Still reading. Hoping Blondie is feeling better. Want to be a pocket passenger on the Alaska cruise. Also want that neuropathy gone for Wren. That hurts like the devil. Beautiful screen porch weather in the Midwest. My neighbor now uses a different door to his house than usual so he doesn't look me in the eye. Or maybe so my sweet dog can't see him.. LOL

Hi everyone
Cami- did you ever think that maybe your mom sent you out to pick the raspberries because they were your favorite? Just her way of giving you a treat? I know I would do things like that with my kids, different things for each, but a way to give them a little "extra" treat without the others claiming I was unfair. Just a thought.
Chevy- I, too, had to look way back to see what you had said. I try not to stereotype people, but sometimes facts are facts. It is a very sad fact, but there was way too much of that going on when we were kids. That doesn't mean there weren't hundreds or thousands of good, Godly preists that lived exemplary lives, but in the same sense, their goodness doesn't negate the evil of the sick ones- or vice-versa. I am sure someone said(probably Jackie) judging is not our jobs. And I know you didn't mean to hurt anyone with your remarks.
I didn't have a garden growing up in the city, but I did have the pleasure of fresh tomatoes with salt during the summer. What a treat!

Thanks Minus! I just sent myself that web-site. DD was given a plant from her friend.... Yes, they are as small as Peas! And really good! I'll order those for next year! I know what you mean about the skins being tough, like the ones from the store....
Yes, I know about just planting tomatoes straight in the ground! New plants come up, even after a hard freezing winter!
DD in Orlando has different growing seasons also, but when we were there, you can buy the BEST home-grown tomatoes from the stands.... I really notice a difference in what you plant them in...
I have used crushed egg-shells, coffee-ground, pine needles, and dried leaves.... BUT the best soil is the Miracle Gro that I got from Walmart! Can't go wrong with that. I add Pearlite to it also, just to aerate a little more.
What are YOUR secrets...... No Cammi, don't tell me any more of your secrets.... Ha, ha.....! Or I'll tell you mine! xoxoxoxo

Chevy - I basically quit gardening in 2011 when I first got BC - other than to have someone plop my frangapani (plumarias) in the ground each spring. So my secret has been "bribing" my lawn man to bring me tomatoes. I pay for a number of anonymous plants of his choice and he buys & adds them to his garden. In return I get lots of different kinds of tomatoes to taste test & report. No worries about the birds or the worms or the food or the water, etc. He's been happy to do it because he loves gardening and after his lung cancer treatments the tomatoes have never tasted good to him again.

All this talk of home-grown tomatoes!!! My mouth waters and I feel envious! There will be no tomatoes at the farmers' mkts here in Park Rapids until August. I guess that deprivation is my punishment for leaving the hot, humid land of tomatoes in the garden. Unlike Minus, I love the cherry tomatoes. We buy the boxes of yellow ones at Sam's Club and eat them for snacks. I hope heirloom tomatoes will become more popular so they won't be so expensive to buy for those of us who don't grow our own.
Cammi, what luxury to pick raspberries and eat them in the garden! More salivating! I think Anne has some good insight into why your mother sent you out to pick them.
Chevy and Cammi, I enjoy your joking around and do not take offense because I know neither of you would ever deliberately be offensive.
I got a scalping--er, haircut today. It definitely won't take a long time to blow dry my hair for a while! I really don't mind because it seems like a good cut and less hair is better than too much hair.
It's like a Louisiana winter day here today. Temp. in the 50's and misting rain this morning. DH and I slept under the comforter and an extra fleece blanket last night. He got up first and turned on the heat pump in the camper. We went to town for a great breakfast at the Great Northern café, and I got my haircut. Back here at the camper, the afternoon has passed pleasantly.
Hope tomorrow will be a better day for getting out and playing golf.
Happy Monday to all.

Minus, it is getting harder for me to garden also.... But I found out instead of planting the plants directly in the ground, I plant the tomatoes in big pots! Then I tie that wide burlap "ribbon?" that I get at Walmart, around the tops, tie it, and add silk flowers in the "bow!"
So the black posts I found in the alley, look pretty nice! They are about 36" round, so will hold several big tomato plants with cages.
Darn! I can't post pictures here now from my new fangled computer! I was going to post a picture of those big pots.... oh well.......
Thanks Carole...and Anne.....Yes, we've "known" each other for a long time.... just makes me feel bad when someone "new" comes on, and calls me out for something I didn't even know I did....

Hi everyone I do want to make something perfectly clear. My mom did not sent me out to pick the berries cuz she knew I liked them--they were to be fixed for the whole family and no one else was ever around for any chores but me and she would never step in the garden ever, which made my Dad unhappy cuz he loved it and we didn't have a dryer, I was taught how to hang clothes when I was nine and I hated it now as much as I loved my mom and I did I did all the work to help her cuz I was the youngest and boys didn't do anything those days and my sister did nothing cuz I never gave my mom a hard time, my sister would always have a good reason that my mom fell for, Just so u know hahaha I knew my mom
0 -
Carole, you make me yearn for a TRULY cool night, and not an air conditioned cool night. Oh, I know they will come, but there is something about snuggling in a blanket when it is chilly in the room. I love that feeling -- of course, I'm all for trying to sneak every little ounce of experience ( especially the ones that were special from early childhood ) and continue to gain that unqualified just totally all over coziness that just happened. I really believe when things happen ( and they do to almost all young people ) and they make a good, lasting impression on you.....that you receive that very same quality of special feeling --- like the Universe just CHOSE you, and now you can feel all the positive things again --- and have all that harmony of feeling return. It just makes me feel that I'm in tune with everything from the stars on down.
Minus...I think I want to come and vacation at your house about time for the tomatoes to be ripe. What a wonderful man --- who just wants to grow something whether he can eat it or not. He has a gorgeous soul and I think should have some pretty good karma stored up.
Cammie, I just have to ask you this.....why wouldn't your mom go in the garden.????
Ok....I've taken a break and now I have to get back to work.
Blessings
Jackie

Chevy, I loved the musical interlude for older ladies so much I posted it on my Facebook page. I have a number of friends who are "old broads" too who will enjoy it.
Teacher, thanks for reminding me about Menopause, the Musical. I saw it about 10 years ago and even bought the t-shirt they were selling in the lobby.
Di, can you believe our Alaska cruise is almost here? I booked it after my diagnosis a year ago and now it's just around the corner. We get to meet each other at last! Of course we may not be able to tell what we look like if your glasses don't get here and my double vision comes back! LOL.
I admire those of you who can grow tomatoes. I've tried so many times but failed.
Welcome to the newcomers. Do we really have too Wrens now?
We might not have the answer to your questions, but we can sure entertain you with our silly banter until someone smart comes along who knows more than we do. I am happy to say I avoided chemo as well so I'm no help. There are several threads that deal with it so I hope you can get help there.
Jackie, love the kitty cat picture. A group hug feels so good, doesn't it.
Finally, a cartoon to make you smile. If men had to get "man-o-grams" you KNOW they would have come up with a better idea real quick.

0 -
So let's make this perfectly clear.... "Your Mom sent you out to pick the berries" because you were the only one within a 2 square mile radius that would do anything around there.... And yes, why didn't your Mom want to go in the garden? I was RAISED in a garden.... My Dad was a Florist, and my Mom grew anything that would sprout! She even grew rocks.... Ha!I mean she grew Orchids, and flowering Bonsai's! Their yard in California looked like a Paradise, which is what it was. Dad grew Monkey Tail Fern, Paint-brush, Bird of Paradise, Anthurium, and they even had a fish-pond in their Lanai! That Dad strung a 5000 foot cord from the house up on poles and trees, to pipe music into those speakers he had hidden out there.
So we used to sit out there, underneath the Lemon tree and smoke pot.
JUST kidding.... Ha, ha! I never did it THEN, but maybe we should all try now? I mean it's EVERYwhere, so they say..........

Okay, I can NOW post pictures... I can't do it by opening with AOL, but I tried opening with Chrome, and I found I could post a picture on the Insomnia thread, so I am elated... I ALSO have spell-check...
Now normally I might add something here about Cammi and her aversion to spell-check, but I will just leave that to the Gods.... She uses an old Underwood you know... and her round-eraser wheel with the bristles is lost. So she can't correct.
So now I will try and post a picture from my Picassa....of Tomatoes..... My little tomato plants.

The truth is that our finest moments are most likely
to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy,
or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled
by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts
and start searching for different ways or truer answers.

Good Morning---
Still waiting for the tomatoes Chevy with u'r new skill that u want to SHOW-OFF---2 hrs now. Oh well.
Since it seems to be such another quirk in my family, I will explain---and no Chevy my mom had me around a long time my brothers are older--12yr, 9 yrs and my sister is 6 yrs. So when we moved to a home for a garden they new better. My mom hated the sun, the birds, the bugs and the feel of grass and dirt. When my dad would bring in a couple of flowers for my mom all she thought of were bugs coming into the house from the flowers and give them to me to throw out in the garbage outside, when fruit or veggies came in they went right to the sink and she sprayed them with water like crazy and soaked them. Now in the winter her and I would shovel because not many birds, sun or insects--when we washed windows I was the outside person and she's stand there and point where I didn't get the spot. My mom skin was like porcelain and she never got a tan, of course she never really got wrinkes either. Now I sound like my mom was a tyrant and in some ways she was very strict, but she was also the best hearted person that even the neighbors would tell me and as I grew older I saw the other side of my mom and being loving , gentle, giving but she still liked spotless rooms always. But since I did do so much more with my dad outside and when he had projects to do (cuz he didn't want his BOYS to getinvolved with labor) they had to go to school in order to hire people for that) he was another character, but he was so proud that they did that and could afford all they had--anyway I was his helper so that's when my dad and I formed our bond and we we all gre older he would just say I was his favorite with no guilt attached and as u know I lived in a condo upstairs from them for years--cuz I was so close to them. So that's my story--Oh so much more but that's enough for now LOL I've already bored the hell out of u.

Good Morning,
Trying to get laundry hung up and put away. Yesterday we had a horrific storm, when DH and I came home we were not sure if we were going to make it thourgh. Dry Creeks filled to the brim. We made it. He went in to shop this morning and said now that water was down not to bad. We have a 30 & 40% chance of rain for the next 3 days. Loving it., this is the most rain we have had in three years. The Davis Mt's look like you are in Ireland.
Last Friday I had jury duty, they were picking the grand jury for the next 6 months, well I was #1 and of course I am on the grand jury. I think it will be interesting.
Need to get my rats killed
Have a good day

Grand Jury is so interesting, Good Luck.

Cammie, I so enjoyed hearing about your home life and your interaction with your parents growing up. No one had a perfect childhood, but it is wonderful to see it from adult eyes and perspectives.
I know I truly changed my viewpoint...almost totally when I became older, and started to understand the unique personalities of my parents, and realize they had many, many struggles ( just like I did, but on a different scale ) through my growing up years. My folks were quite hard-working and my mother was especially stoic. They made do -- which means we sure didn't have much, and things were not always right, but we had their determination and love to get me and my sister raised and on our own.Cammie, I think your parents were "perfect" for you. Your growth depended on things happening just the way they did.
That said....I think we are very OLD souls and when we discover that we need another Earth life to complement our soul's growth, we look for people who will have within them habits, morals, attributes and anything else that matches with our needs. That is why, even with some of the "agonies" of growing up in my household, I look back and feel I had the perfect parents for ME and I am so grateful.
There is a lot more I could say on that subject but I'll let it go.
Mommarch...glad you had no REAL issues driving home after the torrential rains. The Grand Jury duty does sound interesting. You will go right to work on it, I think. With regular jury duty, you just sit and see if you are picked for any of the trials being heard. Something of a time waster in a way, though people do need to have their day in court.
See you all later.
Blessings,
Jackie

It was fun reading about you as a little girl! You sound like you would accept anything, and it taught you to be so forgiving, and perfect.... just the way you are!
Okay miss smarty-pants Cammi.... I only have a few tomatoes right now.... The little black/purple ones, and the Patio tomatoes.... The big Julia Childs are coming along, and the plants look good too! Hope the Tomatoes get as big as they HAVE been! I saved the seed from last year... and just planted them in my "pot-pots" after they were a couple inches tall....

My little neighbor gave us their stereo system.... and all the CD's and Tapes their Son Danny had.... He was just the sweetest, cutest guy, and all of a sudden he had a heart-attack at the gym! Finally had to have a heart transplant.... and he did OKAY with that.... Theresa took really good care of him, living next door!
And then he met Nina.... on the Internet.... After they were married, he got cancer of the lymph nodes???? And the chemo nearly killed him.... well it did, because his transplanted heart just couldn't take it......
He loved Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como..... and even Louis Prima! So we now have all his Cd's and his tapes..... I thought Theresa would cry, when I said, "Oh, here is Bobby Caldwell!" One of his favorite singers....... I don't know how Parents survive when they lose a child.... no-matter how old they are!
Maybe that is why I feel so close to her, because we were close with them, going through this.... So now we have Danny's favorite music! He loved his Camaro, and used to race it at Bandamere Race Track..... That's where his ashes are.... He wanted them on his race-track.
Nina, his wife, is the one with brain-cancer, but is helping Theresa with her packing.... etc!
I'm making Potato, Broccoli cream soup, and going to take her some in the morning..... DH took her a couple Cinnamon rolls this morning....She seemed to be a little better! It's as if she is having Panic Attacks! But this morning was better for her......
Okay gals.... Jackie, you are sooooooooo sweet! You just live in my heart! xoxoxoxo

Cami, your story did not bore me ... whenever you are ready, share more ... I like family stories. Since my mom and I are so different, I used to say I must have been adopted. Now I think about how our life experiences made us so different.

Jackie, I am totally in sync with your philosophy that we are old souls and are here to learn important life lessons and evolve spiritually. You are a highly evolved soul as evident by your uplifting postings and positivity, I think we are all gaining from your insights. Thank you!
Chevy and Cami - love your postings too!
