Yes, I think it IS a Virginia Creeper.....  I have a few started out back on the Arbor I put up in my garden.   That picture was taken about 10 years ago...Anda the vines don't always turn that pretty red..... Depends on the weather, and when we get the first frost I think.  We put up a new iron fence  along the walkway, and next to the other house....  And the vines have covered that whole fence now....

That Colorado Blue Spruce is over 100 years old....  and still growing good....  It really helps keep the house cool in this heat....  just have to keep it watered good!

SandraI hope all is going well I know it hasn't been easy  for  you.

Mommarch glad your home safely and hope GD likes her new school

Chevy, I love your house It looks so inviting and cozy

Ladies, please let us know all about your trip. Alaska sounds like a great place to visit.

We had four of our grandkids (ages 10, 8, 6, and 5) here Friday night and all day today. They are fun to be around and they get along really well. We played games all day (Sorry and spoons were a few) Three oldest belong to our 3rd son and dil and the 5 yr old from our oldest son and dil. We had rain here most of the day so we were not able to go out to play.

Finally done with therapy for knees and hip. They do feel better most of the time but the therapist gave me a list of exercises to do when hurting and to do a few times a week.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Hi, I've been trying to catch up but it just doesn't happen....
I'm still about 3-4 pages behind.  But I love that the conversation evolves so smoothly each day.
About dogs - no luck for us.  We had a dog that ran away and we never found it...had just gotten it.  Then we were given a dog that was a champion English Cocker but was deaf...so retired.  We tried so hard to integrate Mitzi into our family but he was so high strung and needy and would run and of course we couldn't call him so he just kept going....we eventually had to find another home for him.  When we inherited my MIL's aging dog we knew we couldn't keep her with 5 kids and 4 cats.  I was badly bitten when I was 12 and my parents had a poorly trained full-sized Doberman in a small house.  I couldn't bring friends in.  The dog was territorial around my Mom and if
I was coming in the house at night I'd knock first.
I wish I did not have such a fear of large dogs.  Last month, a little chocolate brown pure-bred pup was walking near the street.  I called him to me and he wouldn't leave my side.  He was tagged so I had a neighbor call in that he was found.  I would have adopted him for sure.  God bless all you dog owners and rescuers.

Carole, I hope you found your energy again.  I am still behind so I have missed some days.

The Alaska rendezvous sounds wonderful.  I am not a cruise ship lover...I prefer my feet on the ground (and collecting rocks).  But that part of Alaska cannot easily be seen except by boat or small plane.  I will book that inside passage cruise someday.  My three trips to Alaska were on the mainland with some wonderful excursions by air to the Katmai area, Brooks Lodge, and over the streams, glaciers and peaks of Denali NP
I hope you can make this meet-up work!

Lola, sorry to hear about your recurrence, long treatment and challenges you face.  Welcome to this group of friendly ladies where we talk about anything and are empathetic listeners as well.

Jackie, I DID feel just like the song lyrics say when I was away on vacation.  I felt so grateful and had time to reflect.  I made sure to feel the coolness of the pool water and to savor each bite of delicious food.  I looked at the faces in a country where the locals are poor and kids lose hope, against the backdrop of tourists and luxury lodges.  I thought a lot about how we all start out with the same basic opportunities but some of us are so fortunate to be born in the USA and others have to fight hard to build a good life elsewhere.  I don't feel guilty for what I have as DH and I work hard.  But I do appreciate it more than ever.  We know we cannot save the world; but we can lend a hand or donate to help a few.

There was a storm that dumped 13" of rain over a small swath of Long Island in a few hours.  It caused flooded roads and homes.  We were away and read about it online.  Our town got less than an inch.

DD#2 and 2 of my grandkids are here until Sunday so the house is hopping again.  They get up early, so I better catch some sleep.
I was back to work Friday, first day.  There's a lot to do but I long for a little more summer.

I will try to read up tomorrow...I am grateful for each one here.

    Good Morning ladies.

Puffin that gnome is adorable and u did a perfect job. U had to enjoy doing it or it wouldn't look so good.

Joan u've been so busy and u'r trip sounds incredible.

    (((HUGS))) Blondie

Lola I always theink of Barry Manilow's song,----Her name was Lola--well I think that what is  anyway.

No, I don't have pretty ears like you do... Mine are cute, but they
    stick out! So I couldn't wear a pony-tail when I was little... Smarty-pants!

And NO, I didn't help my Dad build this house! He did it
by himself. :) I was busy playing in the ditch.... But yes.... I love that
tree! It is HUGE now.... biggest one I have ever seen.... anywhere! The roots
will probably support the foundation of this house... Ha!

I think it grows so well because we live by this
irrigation canal.... (Ditch, in other words)

    image

This just shows the base of the tree...
but we finally got grass to grow under it, because we had it trimmed up, to keep
the branches off of the roof.

Puffin! That is so cute! I DO like him better
painted! I have some plaster garden things, but wondered if I should paint
them, to protect them from the Winter, or maybe just cover them.... They are
    HUGE though...

Morning Termite! And Carole! Carole, you just egg her
ON! She thinks of these things when her mind is idle.... which is mostly all
    the damn day.... and night.....

But she cracks ME up too.... but I don't tell her
    that!

Joan! I loved your post talking to Jackie! About how
lucky we are, and how we should enjoy EVERYthing we do and get! It's so
    true.....

Cammi..... who's Lola? Here your singing that song, and
there's no Lola. My Daughter in Orlando has a Lola... a cat...

But I liked Barry Manilow too.... But I think he was
    singing about a girl. Whatever.

You are now at a crossroads.  This is your opportunity to make the most important decision you will ever make.  Forget your past.  Who are you now?  Who have you decided you really are now?  Don't think about who you have been.  Who are you now?  Who have you decided to become?  Make this decision consciously.  Make it carefully.  Make it powerfully.

It is always a joy to come here everyday and see just who is gadding about on the pages.  I love to read others viewpoints on things.  Helps me often decide just how I do feel  about something, and sometime I change my mind completely.  I always tend to think I've thought everything about certain subjects and I'm now "set" in stone on it.....only to find out through someone else's perspective that maybe there is a lot more to it --- and just maybe I need to explore myself a little more.

As she was mentioned, I went back and found Lola and sent her a pm.  She had made three posts ( 1 to the Older Women )  and then no more posting.  She may be trying to get through a hard patch and so I just let her know that we care about her.  That we didn't wish to be intrusive in any way but that if she felt the need we were here for her.

I had some difficulties early on finding "where" I had posted though I really wanted to be back there, so it is always a bit of a consideration of mine that people are not sure how to 're-find' some place they have been.  Have as well had a couple of people who were actually having just that issue and they were able to get back.  So, just in case.

It is hot and muggy here again.  No let up yet for a few more days.  So hot out that when we come inside it feels like a freezer for a  bit.......and we keep it on 78 in here.  Feel like we don't want to give our systems a big shock going out --- but we really get a bit of one coming back in.  It is a four-shower day at least.  Every time I go outside today I'll feel like I need a shower by the time I get back in.

Went out this a.m. to take food out to the dog pen and there was a beautiful deer standing in the yard munching on something.  There was one yesterday too.  Watched me then, walk over to the car, get in and drive off and never much batted any eye --- just stood there and kept on chewing.

As wonderful as that is, Dh and I are concerned -- when the deer feel that confident, they will act the same if they wander into an area where hunters are allowed.  Many places out here it is not allowed --- around the lake where so many families are in residence.  But, getting a little way out and in season ( not that it always presents a barrier to all )   you can take the deer.  I'm not much of one who likes for it to happen though I know if you don't take some there could be over populations.  Still, I feel most people no longer have to do it to eat -- they are just looking for a trophy and that is upsetting to me.  I find absolutely nothing thrilling  ( I'm not a male of course, and that does make a difference ) about killing an animal.  Especially a beautiful one.

If an animal ( and it happens ) has rabies or something, I'm all for humanely putting it down, but for sport -- I'm just horrified that anyone wants to choose whether an animal gets to live or die to assuage your senses.  If you have to ( animal is charging you )  I can deal with it, but for something to hang on your wall or give you bragging potential....forget it.

Ok, enuf' of my ranting on that.  I get to wound up -- but those beautiful big brown eyes looking at me in a totally carefree, fearless way just get to me.

    Happy Sunday

    Blessings,

    Jackie

Jackie, I agree with you completely on not "getting" what the thrill is in hunting.  Sorry if I'm offending anyone but I'm just sharing my feelings.  And one of my brothers has part ownership in a hunting camp.  He and his co-owners lease a large number of acres in MS.  They plant rye grass for the deer and have little raised shelters that they hide in and wait for the deer to come by.

Here at the resort I talked to a young woman this summer who loves hunting.  But she and her husband do hunt only for what they will eat.  They butcher the deer they kill and put the meat in the freezer to help with their food expense.

More than the hunting my brother likes to spend his weekends at the hunting camp in the winter.  If he kills a deer, he has it processed and made into sausage.

Today is another overcast day.  It rained heavily for a short time last night and there is possibility of more rain today.  It's very humid but 69 degrees outside.  A few degrees warmer in the camper.  We have no plans for going anywhere today.  The weekenders will probably be going home early since it isn't a pretty day for being outside or going fishing.

    Happy Sunday.

    Howdy,

Am finally getting suit case unpacked.  Its hot here also, we have had alot of rain this summer, so humidity is up.

I am still exhausted, will have to help DH tomorrow gather yucca stalks and will have to be in town on Tuesday to meet with Kimber's worker in the afternoon after school.  Hope Wed. I can stay home and do laundry.  Fun Fun.  I want to paint my kitchen cabinets at some point, they are laminate and pretty worn.

    Love the garden nome.

I forgot I also have to go and have my blood platletts checked this week.

DH bought a 1986 Jeep Wrangler 4X4 when he was in Iowa.  Carberator had to be rebuilt, so DBIL paid for that, it was not ready and we had to get back, so I guess at some point in the next couple of months DH and DS are going to go back to Iowa and pick it up.  It will be good on our roads out here.

Have a great rest of the day

Mommarch, glad you are unpacking and settling in to "normal things" - sometimes it is just what we need.

We have a lot of deer wandering in the yards here.  I noticed this year that the fawns are fearless and much less wary.  They wander alone all day in plain sight and I see no mother or siblings nearby.  That is unusual.  They have ravaged my yard and eat the bird seed.  But I agree they are beautiful animals. They lounge on my lawn late at night. They do carry diseased ticks so we have cleared a lot of our wild shrubbery.  We do not have a fence but they hop over everything here. Their worst enemy is the automobile and their own fearlessness.    There are only 4 acres across the street but dozens of acres north of a very busy road so it's risky for them.

Yesterday my grandson hooked a fluke in the bay within a minute of dropping his line.  It was not large enough to legally keep.  Dh tried so long to remove the hook.  We all wanted a photo with grandson holding fish, but DH quickly threw it back so it would live.  It was so hard to watch.  I guess it is contradictory to admit we would have kept and eaten the fish had it been large enough.  However, I am slowly evolving away from eating meat - fish, eggs & milk are still on the list but I do not know for how long.  ...I do not understand the thrill of hunting.  It is said that it can be an advantage to thin the deer herd.

I slept until almost 11 Am and was awakened to say goodbye to my DD and kids.  I guess they wore me out yesterday - all were up until 11 PM.

I then saw today's earthquake news for northern CA and Bay area.  My son lives there and it took a few frantic moments to find out he is fine.  Another grateful moment here.

    Hi gals!

Jackie, I just GOTTa tell you, that you have some pretty smart DEER in that area.... You said...."Went out this a.m. to take food out to the dog pen and there was a beautiful deer standing in the yard munching on something. There was one yesterday too. Watched me then, walk over to the car, get in and drive off and never much batted any eye " And then you said you just stood there and kept on chewing?    Did he wave or anything to you?

I mean I have TRIED to teach them how to drive, and they just won't listen!  They must belong to a car-club or something.... I mean 2 in 2 days?  Next, they'll be partying all night!  Drinking beer & carousing all OVER the place!   Then hop in their cars, and make it home by curfew.

Okay.... I'll quit.  I cleaned upstairs getting ready for our oldest DD!  Got her room already.... I found an old mouse carcass!  EuuuuuuuW!  Dang!  I just thought it was a lint something!  But not with a tail!   I didn't even feel bad about a dead mouse.  I mean I put enough mouse pellets out last year....  Must have done the job.

I don't mind them outdoors, but not in my house!  Lady bugs can come in, but not anything else.

I think it's so ironic, that when we were young, DH went hunting with his Brother's..... AND we went fishing.... But nope!  He doesn't do it anymore.... Not for quite a few years.

I just hate the thought of hunting them!  Something so beautiful, and meant to be wild....!  Kind of like Cammi!    Yes, we DID used to eat Venison, and it really helped, with our groceries....  Times were pretty rough when the girls were growing up....

And no more fresh Trout....  Too many stickers anyway.

Just give me Tuna in a package or can, and some Spam!

Hi Mommarch!  Are you feeling alright?

Have a great Sunday gals! xoxoxoxo

All this talk about deer reminded me to tell you all about a hilarious post on my Facebook page. It a recording of a woman caller to a morning radio show. She's not complaining about deer, she's complaining about deer crossing signs and she is 100% serious.

I can't get the link to post correctly so type into your Google (or other browser) these words:

I promise it's the funnies think you've ever heard.

Thanks everyone for the B-day wishes - and to Sandra for picking up on it.  I'm the big 70 so I'm celebrating all week.  Had Italian lunch w/my SIL last week, Mexican lunch w/one friend on Saturday (and two margaritas), seafood lunch w/another tomorrow, lunch w/my ex-husband on Wednesday - probably steaks - and on Thursday I'll have BBQ lunch w/4 girl friends and we'll play dominoes all afternoon.  I'll have to spend next weekend recovering from all the calorie overload.
