on kindle forgive typing. Can't sit. Too much sitting in computer chair yesterday.

Chevy yeah go for wild. You an dear husband come by it legitimately. Do it. Don't be safe. You know you want too. Look at it this way. You have been careful all your life. With as long as you keep cars, hey this could be your last car.

Pepper glad you figured it out. Now I need too. Hope you feel better and ds too. Omd, I haven't heard of Watkins in years. It was always in my mom's house.

Another mom story. Their bar in the 70's. She took the beer picture of a table off a guy who had too much. He became nasty. She shoo'ed him out the front door with a bar towel. While she was shoo'ng the guy out. The rest of the people rushed to the back door. Guy was gone. She turns, asks "What?". Some one said, "Didn't you see the gun?"

  • Watkins...My step grandmother was a sales rep, when she passed, granpa let my mom and her sister have all the stuff, but all I really remember mom getting was bottles of liniment and vanilla flavoring!

hi all, back from my sewing retreat, I'll post a pic of my dress when I get done sewing the armholes down. Didn't get a lot done.

Got my surgery date this morning, December 5. So I can do thanksgiving and Christmas. I even can plan on swim lessons through November, yeah!

Glad to see Susan and tang back. Hi!

Holeinone- cool car perfect for summer evenings.

Chevy good luck picking a car.

Sas-shatzi- funny stores about your Mom and their bar. I love that she took no crap! Great story about the gun.

Smarty good luck on the surgery.

It's 2am been up for 1/2 hour.. wide awake. Hmmm took some more Melatonin. Did lots of gardening and dog washing yesterday. You would think that would wear me out! Just washing my border collie who hates water is a huge job... all that thick fur, rinsing and rinsing. Then she is invigorated and wants to play ball! OY! She is nearly 10 years old and has not slowed down a bit. My other 2 dogs are small 17 and 15 pounds - corgi/westie/chihuahua mix and a  doxie/chihuahua/russel mix. The westcorgihuahau is 17 years old and it's a very slow bath. She's nearly blind and almost deaf. Poor thing but she loves laying in the sun after a bath, baking her bones. I see many of you have dogs or "fur" kids as I think of them. I love my dogs even if they are lots of work. Wish my border would let me take her to the groomer.. but she hates it. sigh.. it's me washing or a stinky dog.

Do you find just laying there in the dark for ages makes you fall back to sleep? I've read that playing on the computer keeps you awake, but I get so bored just reading a book! It's something to do at least.. quiet. all quiet here so ya'll must be sleeping. Hope blondie got zzzs.

    PAGE 600!  Woo-hoo!

    Morning gals!

Rose, I remember the one time my DD talked me into taking
Lacee to the Pet-Smart to have her groomed... We dropped her off, then went a
    few blocks for breakfast.

Then we went back, and I stood behind a display of some
sort and watched them groom her...! I just wanted to run back in there, and
say, "But be CAREful... She is just a puppy!"

She survived, but I never took her back again.... And
those 2 pink bows over her ears drove her nuts... She DID look beautiful, but I
slowly learned how to groom her myself, and brush & comb her Loooooong hair
and trim out her undercoat... clean out her ears, trim her toes and paws, and
we both loved it! In the warm weather I would fill the baby plastic pool on the
picnic table, then after the sun warmed the water, she got her bath! Then she
would get brushed and pampered, and maybe only "part" of her done each day....
But she had more FUR and hair than any dog I had ever seen! She was more work
than my GIRLS!  But she was beautiful!

And I LOVED it! So yes.... we love our pets around
    here.... Ha!

So finally I told DH, "I have to measure my car".... I
went out, did that, and found out the Nissan would not fit in our garage! I
was going to get the money yesterday!

He went outdoors for awhile, and KNEW that I was hell-bent
on getting a car.... SOON! He came back in and said "If you will wait until
Spring, I'll GIVE you the money for a car!"

I just looked at him dumbfounded... and said "you MEAN
it?" I told him "I just feel like I'm in this all by myself, and I want YOU to
help me, and not just let Tom and me DO it!"

I think when some men get older, and they sort of lose
their sense of accomplishment, and zest for life... they become just too
comfortable in their world, and don't want no hassles along the road. He USED
to be all get-up-and-go, but this past year, is just more comfortable with doing
a lot less, and nothing out of the ordinary day stuff...

I mean the trip to Orlando was about all he could take...
Ha! So here I am all gung-ho and wanting not to mention NEEDING another
car.... And he just didn't think it was necessary....

It isn't the money.... and yes SASS, I WILL find a car I
love... someday... but not yet... The Nissan guy DID call back, but we were
gone, so I'll just forget it for now.

Yes, we DO keep cars for forEVER! His is an '89 Mercury
Topaz... and it still RUNS! He drives it about once a month to meet his
Brother... Mine is a '99... So I'm thinking we will just go to a car-lot... and
trade in one of them... when the time comes...

I have to find a smaller car... no, not one of those dinky
little toy-cars you see buzzing around.... But one that will fit in our garage,
and one with no TV screen on the dash, or whatever they are, that I would never
figure out... I would like mag wheels, a sun-roof.... for my long blonde
hair.... to blow in the wind.... One with leather seats, so I could slide in
better, and not have to scrunch up to get OUT! And one without a broken door
    handle.... Ha!

Nettie.... My Grandma's medicine box had Linament, and
Vick's Vapo-rub, and Ben-Gay.... Ha! But that VICK's is so good to mix with
other creams for your hands and legs! Mix it with Desitin, or the generic, AND
with Shea butter and Vaseline! Sleep with cotton gloves on! Same for your
    feet.

It's so fun to "talk" to you gals.... red cars, pole
dancing, and thoughts on meeting a perv off of Craig's list... Ha, ha! Well,
    I tried...

Peppermint, You know you are right.... It ISN'T safe going
even ANYwhere with that much cash! I mean I was just so anxious, and would
    have done it....

But this time I DID listen to Husband even.... He said we could  look at a few cars, check them out, then maybe leave them $200, and then go back with a
bank check with his name on it!

And then I would go meet the guy later in an alley or
    somewhere in the dark.

Chevy, when did you get long blonde hair? Just trying to imagine... And when you're measuring the car, don't forget to make sure there's enough room for your pole and boas. For the traveling Chevy show, don't ya know.

I had a long day yesterday. Finally decided to see what's going on with not being able to breathe. After 6-1/2 hours in the emergency room, I find out I have pneumonia. My mom would jokingly call it pee-numonia. She had it pretty often in her last years, always requiring a hospital stay (she called it a house-pital) and subsequent rehab. Apparently I have a "mild" case, nothing showed up on X-ray but the CT showed scattered pockets. So a bag of zithromycin and Zithromax to take at home. What I can't figure out is, how do I catch pneumonia when the only place I go it the cancer center? Someone said DH or cousin could have brought home enough of a bug to hit my chemo-compromised immune system but not enough to make them sick. DH joked he's Typhoid David. He may be right.

Anyway, the emergency room was a circus, and that was just the staff. There were only a couple of patients when we got there. The LPN was on her second day on the job, blew out a vein trying to start an IV, they didn't want to use my port, but ended up having to because the IV wasn't big enough to run the CT dye. Then they got the wrong port part and had to redo that. Then they had to stick me again to draw blood from two different sites for a culture, blew out another vein before they finally got one. So I'm all bruised and battered. At least now I'm starting to be able to breathe a bit as long as I don't move. Even the ten steps to the kitchen for coffee wears me out and by the time I'm back in the recliner I'm gasping. I'd hate to see what a serious case would be.

And, another 4 hours of sleep last night. Exhausted.

Had a bad night last night, was in a lot of pain, arthritis was kicking up due to bad weather. Couldn't get comfortable enough to get more than 2 hours of sleep. Poor hubby didn't sleep much either because he was trying to help me as much as he could.

  • Not sure what's up with me, but I've been trying to walk at least a mile everyday!  Not sure if that's helped, but for some unknown reason, for the last 3 - 4 nights, I've actually slept!  Heck I was so exhausted yesterday after work that I was able to take a 2 hour nap, then right back to bed at 10 and slept until 6!  That's a record for me!

Been having a little cough, think (or hope) it's allergies as I also have some nasal congestion, not bad, just aggravating!

Glad most of you are doing well!

Chevy, I hate, hate, hate having to buy a new car!  Mine is now 10 years old(nothing compared to you and your DH), but soon I'll be looking!  Hubby had a 95 GMC pickup until just this year and he just purchased a brand new Ford!  First time he's ever bought a BRAND NEW truck!  I'm thinking that when I start looking, I'll still go with something used!  But as long as mine is not giving any trouble, I think I'll stick with it!

Must be that lunar eclipse .  I had the crap scared of of me yesterday.  Went for port flush and blood draw yesterday. As I was checking out, girl says, you must have this blood work done before your appt. on the 28.  Why? So doc can compare.  Compare what? Your numbers.they can change that fast? Yes.

So I cried all the way home thinking IT has come back. OMD it was horrible. I had to stop crying to go in Publix to get DHs bday cake.  And I called the MOs office. Talked to a different, more experienced girl. She was able to talk me down, determined the other girl didn't know the draw had been done, and that all was ok.

What a day. And that was after a fasting blood draw at pcp that didn't happen till 11am. That's not good for a diabetic.

hi rosevslley, I am Susan...been away for a bit di I thought I would introduce myself :) hope you finally went to sleep last night . I have one dog and 2 birds....

hey everyone , did I forget to tell you the SNAKE is gone:(. I was sad. I joke with everyone's kids about taking the snake. One if the kids took me seriously ( I need to work on my sarcasm) , and said she would take it. I cuddled with toungestin for a whole morning before she picked him up. Yes they cuddle! He went to a good home ( I know you are all worried ). She carries him around all day. The kid is a loner so the snake is her best friend right now.  So if we do all get together, the snake can't come anymore. ( big sigh).

Hope everyones pain is a bit better today.

I am sitting in the back yard in the sun right now. Sooooooo much better than hiding under the covers :)

    Ta ta all

Hi Everyone, Standing to type. I guess that'll keep me from being long winded. We will see.

Mags, It's your immune system.Much of the time, a  normal person's immune system can just stop those bugs either viral or bacterial. Zithro has been the go too drug since it was introduced. Important facts about Zithro---A must do: Take the two pills the first day as directed. Absolutely necessary or you won't get to blood threshold level. That's why the Zpak was developed. Instructs to take two the first day.  After the last dose the Zithromax or zitrhromycin continues to work for two weeks. Yay.

Important, If the pneumonia is viral in origin. Antibiotics won't work.

Your role is to be aware of your symptoms. If your symptoms get worse, seek medical attention. If after the 5th day you haven't improved see your doc again. Sometimes they will put you on another round. Sometimes a redo on the chest xray will be scheduled.

If you haven't received the Pneumovax yet. Discuss with your doc when you can receive it. The Public health rule/ warning is that NO vaccines should be received within two weeks of a febrile illness.

Pneumovax  will cause your body to develop antibodies against 23 types of bacteria. A person may have the vaccine an get pneumonia. The usual is that the pneumonia is caused by a strain of bacteria not covered by the vaccine. I've said for years that we need pmeumovax II.

    Good Luck :) sassy

Thanks Sassy! I did take my two pills today, and my two puffs of inhaler - that gives me the shakes. I've had Zpacks before. Interesting thing is, with all of this, I haven't had a fever. I've been checking it, and yesterday at ER it was normal. I will be curious to see the results of the cultures they did, wonder how long that takes?

Been resting in bed all day, just finally got to my recliner without huffing and puffing. My family says I look better today.

    sas-schatzi Posts: 15,889

Mags  48 hours on the culture and another 24 hours for the sensitivity. I left my usual sphiel out about  culture and sensitivity.  So happy they were responsible enough to do them YAY. In regard to the fever, remember your immune system isn't flying on all cylinders. That's why you need to watch all s/s's and if you think something is changing for the worse  or simply not improving --see your doc.

It can take several days for antibx's to do their magic

Have you had Pneumovax? Glad there's less huffing and puffing. You're likely on ventolin/Proventil/ albuterol(same drug , three names) and possibly a steroid. Inhalers are magic too. Revolutionized respiratory care when they were introduce in the 70's :)

Spain  health hierarchy is so stupid. Over-reacted and killed the dog. The foremost researcher stated it would add to science immensely to follow the dogs course to evaluate everything. Instead Mato et all,  made a decision based on incomplete science. A person on the NET noted that people in Africa will see this, and it may now lead too the killing of dogs in Africa. Yet, there is NO documented proof of transmission that this has occurred from dogs to humans. There's proof they develop antibodies, not proof of transmission.

Which is exactly my point. Question: What is it about the dogs immune system that they develop antibodies and not the disease? The foremost researcher has done laboratory research on this, but he injected them with Ebola. This was different, would Excalibur have developed antibodies from being exposed to Teresa? We will never know. It will be studied now by testing dogs in Africa. But this was a lost opportunity. The dogs in Africa if antibodies are present, it will be difficult to determine if they didn't get exposed through eating or being bitten by the vectors(carriers) of the disease i.e Fruit bats are possited too be the origin. The other animals listed as carriers are considered to have gotten the disease from the fruit bats. But the true transmission is unknown yet.

    Bye Excalibur

Mags, what inhaler do you use?  I used to use a few, but found they are not on the market anymore.... And they DO make you shake.  Do you use Advair?  That isn't a rescue inhaler, just a daily thing to help....

We should all get the pneumonia shot....  as far as I know....

Sun!  Just sitting in the sun Susan, will make you feel better.... It's healing!

Spookie, sorry,  look, something happens like that in the future ask for the boss nurse to review with you what the nurse/MA said, tell them you need clarification b/c info has been misrepresented in the past. Usually that will get cooperation.

This article is very important. It's written as close as possible in lay terms. This gives a synopsis of how the immune system helps in exposure to Ebola. For this thread,  the concepts of the immune system can be applied to any infectious disease. So, Ebola is the subject, for us think about the description of the immune system.

what a messy bedroom. Oh well, don't care.

Forgot to say hi and hope everybody is doing better.

Not everyone runs a fever when sick. When my dad had pneumonia he was just gray. No fever, no coughing.  My sister's kids never ran a fever when they got ear infections, but she could tell by the way they were acting.

Oh Smarrty, Love the dress. Perfect for the cruise. Perfect. Need a flower for your hair and you are all set :)

Reminds me of a story: My first cruise in 2010. One of those gauzy island dresses. Walking on the top deck. Had no idea it would be so windy. These two young bucks were strategically positioned to enjoy the view of flying skirts of female passers-by. Yikes, my embarrassment trying to keep my dress down. The view they would get was my mens boxer shorts that I used since BMX sx days.

  • sas-schatzi
    sas-schatzi Posts: 15,889

Smarrty that was part of what I was trying to say about the immune system. But I wasn't complete. I also can sit now.

To All: With illnesses most people have heard the phrase that the population groups most affected are the "Elderly, the young, and those with poor immune function"  The temperature is an integral part of the immune response. In the young, it's not well developed. Yes, we can have wildly high responses in youngins. But then, if it doesn't raise to cook those bacteria, we can get into serious trouble. In the olders, it's starting to fail. In the immuno-comprimised, we are all familiar.

Which allows me to comment on the recent advertisments regarding pneumovax. They start by saying "Are you Fifty?" etc. Okay, what's the difference between 49 and fifty? 40 and 50? Any number and 50? A bacteria is a bacteria, it doesn't check your age. To give viruses their due, they don't check age either.

Well, when any bug or virus seems to be more prevalent in an age group. It can be explained by the immune response. That's why I felt that article I linked on Ebola was so important. If you take out the word Ebola and just substitute either virus or bacteria, then you have a much better understanding of the immune system. It's a primer like 'Dick and Jane'. Please, read that article and store away. It as good as it gets in simplification.

Everyone ought to have Pneumovax . It's given with kids now. Colleges require it.  No age is immune from pneumonia. Pneumonia's a bugger. So, many bacteria are resistant to antibx's. Why not prevent a resistant bacteria from entering your lungs and taking hold. If that bacteria is also a bacteria that can appear in wounds YAY you get double coverage.

I have cousins that are so into alternative, no immunizations will be accepted. HMMM

I'm a big believer in immunizations b/c of the total havoc of polio. Three of us in one family in 1952. Neighbors across the street, one the year before, one the year after. Salk had already vaccinated his kids in June 1952. FDA approval wasn't received until 1954. I read Salks obit in disbelief when that statement about him vaccinating his kids. How that would have changed my families whole life.

For those that know friends or family that have had the pneumovax and then later got pneumonia, remind them that it only protects against 23 different types of bacteria. That's why I said we need Pneumovax II. There are more than 23 different types of bacteria. When Pneumovax was developed they included only the most common predators.

    Thanks Smarrty-------sassy
