Awwww. We had a couple of cockies. Grumples was the most talented. He'd yell Heeerrrrreee doggie! I had him on the answering machine whistling Scotland the Brave. DDs pipe teacher said he was flat! Fun little birds

Mom had a cockatiel we trained to do wolf whistles. It was hilarious to see how people reacted when the windows were open and he would let loose as they were walking by.

JWoo, thanks so much for catching me up on everybody!!! I needed that. About your question on how to help out in the world...I keep it local. I feel if everyone took care of the neighbors the world would be a better place. Remember how great chevy was to her neighbor, that is a great example howWe all can be. I also believe that is what we are able to accomplish, especially with what we deal with in our conditions. I used to help out the homeless and lots of other things, can't do it anymore. Then I realized how many people close to me need help. Anyway.....that's my thought for the day.
Dune sleeper....I have a parakeet question.....I have a boy and girl...teddy and dolly....I didn't name them..lol my daughter had a teddy and dolly she wouldn't go anywhere without them. They will never be able to say their names. Lol. Anyway.....teddy has been having his way with dolly. I have searched the Internet, and they said they really can lay eggs......I have had pregnant fish, and hampsters....all successful. So I am going to put a little box in there just in case. Do you have any experience in this area???
Morning all
Be good

Are you sure you have a boy and girl? Boys nostrils are blue, girls are tan. Yes, it's possible you might have baby birds in the future. Get them a keet nesting box, a nice large cage, lots of good birdie chow and see what happens. We didn't have a lot of luck with this, keep us posted.

yep, I have a boy and a girl. They are funny to watch. Not so funny when he mounted her and she let him. Had a talk with them after after that, not sure if they listened. I tried to have a stern voice..lol
Those of you who haven't seen the previous post...we r talking about pet birds...lo

When we were growing up we lived next to a lovely retired couple who had a Minah bird named George. George was huge and exceptionally good at mimicking the door bell, cat cry and the telephone - among many other things. I can't tell you how many times we sat and ate meals to see poor Mary open the back door and mutter damn bird! We assume George let loose the door bell sound. George would also tell himself to shut up! "Shut up George!" We would hear this when the windows were open in the summer. Fun memories.
We have had about 4 canaries over the years. The best singer was "green and grey" one their natural wild colors- What a warbler!!! I have a silver one now that looks like a wild grey bird. He sings well too. Got him from a breeder locally. We have had a white one (rescue) and a yellow and green one. I just love their sunny personalities and song. They live quite a long time. Your little baby Dusty is adorable!

Susan, I had a female cockatiel who layed a couple of eggs. None of my parakeets did. It is my understanding that they will lay eggs when you provide a nesting area for them. If they can lay eggs then I know they can have egg binding occur, which can be deadly, so watch for it. You will need special equipment and feed for the babies, and you must feed them every couple hours. Of course they would need to be kept very warm too. They will be so cute with their mouths wide open, heads back, waiting for you to feed them. Squeaking loudly. That's how I met Dusty. It's a lot of work for a couple of months, by which time they should be able to feed themselves, but wow. Also, one lady at the place where I got my birds told me they can't be pets if you breed them. I don't know why that is or if it's true. Maybe she was afraid I'd be competition. She knew how much I love birds.

Spookiesmom, Grumples sounds very talented indeed. We're trying to get Dusty to whistle the Andy Griffith tune, but it is becoming more and more clear that he is amused to sit and observe us performing for him.
MO, your mom had a great sense of humor. Wolf whistles would be great. Dusty barks. LOL.
Rosevalley, I would SO love George. He would crack me up every time I picked up the phone or answered the door in response to his vocalizations.

Talking about talking birds reminds me of our mockingbird. Our first home had a tall cedar outside that reached past our upstairs bedroom window. A mockingbird took residence there for several years. He could mimic cars going down the street and the distinct whine of our border collie mix, Kippie. You'd think he would sleep at night as most diurnal birds do, but no. He was fond of 3 am for some reason and would mimic a car racing down the street. You could tell it wasn't, but it was remarkably accurate, for a bird. I never really minded the 3 am wake up call, but I was still young then and could actually sleep.
Did I post (don't remember) that the RO referred me to their physical therapy dept. to see if we could get the shoulder loosened up a bit prior to the nerve block I'm getting tomorrow (to enable me to get rads). I went on Friday. When we started my pain level was around 6 (which is fairly normal for me). My left shoulder was achy but the right one was ok. She had me do some arm swings, pulley, bar work, she did some stretching, etc. I was sore, got some ice on it before I left. By the time I got home & settled both of my shoulders were in raging pain, about a 9.5. I took a half a Percocet (left over from bmx) but nothing seemed to help. Had ice on it most of the weekend with no improvement. Couldn't have ibuprofen or celebrex because of tomorrow's procedure. Had an appointment to return on Monday morning. I was supposed to be doing the exercises all weekend but couldn't. I showed up yesterday just to tell here I couldn't do it any more. "Let's start you out with the pulley." She sat me in the chair and I moved the pulleys a few inches up and down and then just stopped. She had me lie on the table & started doing some stretching on the left arm. She and a couple of co-workers started talking about Sunday's football game, while I'm lying on the table, tears streaming down my face from the pain. She had asked my pain level, I guess she didn't believe the 9.5. Finally she noticed that I was not doing well and stopped. Did some e-stim and ice on both shoulders.
Here's the thing: my right shoulder now hurts as bad as, if not worse than, my left shoulder. I suspect a tendon has been damaged by too aggressive movement. I've been dealing with shoulder issues for 9 years now, and I pretty much know what it feels like when the tendon is damaged. I'm really upset by this, because now I have to deal with the pain of another bad shoulder just in order to do the stupid rads. Shouldn't someone have said, let's have a look at what's going on in that shoulder, before deciding on how to treat it? What say our medical experts?
(I'm on the laptop - but even using the mouse hurts the right shoulder now! Why couldn't they just leave me alone?)

Mags, I'm so sorry for how they hurt you! She should be fired, and I hope you will make a loud and clear complaint. Hopefully Sas has some suggestions to ease your pain. I'd even consider calling them and demanding they provide a good therapist for free to help fix the damage that moron caused. Ugh!

Susan / nice thought of the day
Dune - a latte is a nice reward for your walk. Dusty is adorable.
Teka - huh ? No idea what you are trying to say or not say, but just say it. Yes , I thought your post was inappropriate. No , that doesn't mean I think you should delete all your post. Your saying enough said ... But since you are still talking about it , apparently not. Did you know you can block people ? Feel free to pm me ( whenever moderators allow ) if you got something to get off your chest. My ds2 - only 9 - always tries to rat out or take down ds1 when ds2 gets in trouble. Feels familiar like this.

Mags, I've heard of people getting rads while on their stomach. You need to have a looooooong chat with your RO. As for the PT morons, start barking up the command chain. Inexcusable.
0 -
Mags, That's terrible! It sounds like she put you through a regime that should have been after 6 mos of mild stuff. Leaving you in tears is not acceptable. I think they can do an ultrasound and it will show tendons. They did one on my ankle.
JWoo, I agree about doing something local. We have fostered dogs and cats for our city shelter and currently have 2 cats. On Mondays I take calls from people interested in adopting and I go in on Thursdays to take care of any sick cats. On Wed I volunteer at the senior center as a receptionist (I'm a senior myself). Blood bank is a good idea. Years ago I volunteered for an organization working with parents who had been abusive. We had a day on the hotline where parents could call before they lost it. Solutions were often simple, but hard for the parent to think of.
DS left his conure and cockatiel with a bird sitter while he & DIL went on a vacation. When they returned, the conure said "Stop it!" and used it appropriately.

mags - that sounds terrible. So veery sorry that's how it happened.
Jwoo. - it's awesome your giving back. I agree with the others that local is better. Do something that makes you laugh out loud or you are simply passionate about it anyway. Whatever you pick, your organizational list skills will help out.

Wren, I wanted to volunteer at a nursing home nearby, but people discouraged me from that, saying it would be too depressing. I don't know. We'll see. Right now I want to do the yoga class on Tuesdays. I work Monday and Wednesday. I help my mother with her great-grandson on Thursday. We go to church on Saturday evening, and we have to get there over an hour early for "social hour." LOL This Saturday there is a birthday for the above-mentioned child, so maybe the following Saturday I can resume work with the Red Cross. There's a humane society near me, but I don't know if I want to risk it. So many things could go terribly wrong. It would have been nice to cuddle some pups though. I wanted to get involved in the community improvement association. I was involved in the one where I used to live. However, this one is very different, and I'm not sure what I have to offer. There's a site called volunteermatch (don't know if it is .com or .org). That's where I started when I first retired and wanted to volunteer.

I was searching the web, and stopped in at Joan Lunden's site. She is having rads laying on her stomach. There are videos etc. on the site if anyone is interested.

Jwoo, glad all the overtime is over. Sorry for all the rest As far as the terror. Things will now change. It's going to get awful during the change. We can't individually change it. But we can support our government.Holder was in Paris for a terror meeting on Sunday. It ended before the march. Instead of going to the march, he went and did several TV interviews. That was part of the controversy. There likely would have been no controversy if the powers to be told him to go, or he himself would have gone without being told. The whole thing was very much a cluster***k. The French are generally supportive. The controversy is on this side of the pond and in England. The single central thought of the controversy is " that no one on the top level recognized that this was a huge opportunity to send a message to the terrorists". The responsibility lay with the Obama. Truman's statement "The Buck Stops Here" applies. The press is just not letting it go. They want him to come out and personally accept responsibility. The statement from the press secretary while being recognized as a rare occurrence that the Whitehouse admits and error in judgment, the press is pushing for more.
A way to keep the terror reports from tearing you apart emotionally is check in with the news periodically. If you watch it everyday, it's too devastating.
--------------------------------------------------------
Losing so many people at once, my condolences. I know you are there for your friends, but you need to care for you too. Prayer or meditation at every moment that you begin to feel sad. You will still be sad, but the emotional pain will be lifted. Prayer can get you through.
Hot Flash Forum(HFF) Start reading from the beginning, There are some awesome suggestions. I worked on the first 30 pages. I faded away when I was having the brain tumor thingy. I linked to page one

Volunteering. Make a pro& con list. Two columns
Good for community Good for me
A good match is it's a positive on both sides of the column.
My volunteer time is on BCO on my housekeeping threads i.e PORT, Constipation, Pain. AND here on Insomnia thread. The positives are I can use my knowledge, no set schedule which is very important, incredible when things work. Positive for the community and a positive for me. This next thought is not something you will see elsewhere. If a volunteer activity is causing you emotional pain or physical pain, it's not a good match.
Mattress- memory foam is hot. Great for muscle relaxation and deep bone pain. Awful for hotflashes. Have a second bed/sleep area that is more firm with some of the device things recommended from members on HFF.
Maddonna's and clowns ROTFLOL. I didn't think that was right. I have it written down and will take a look
On that person that asked for help and then was insulting. The whole STFU thread was up in arms, but didn't take off on her. We just amused ourselves with it.

Plyliss had a bx about two weeks ago. It was on her incision line. It turned out negative YAY. It was a tough time for her from recognition till she heard the results b/c she found the spot just at the end of her final chemo. I called and left a message just now. I'll post an update when I get it

HUGS L&H&P's sassy

Chevy you are too funny
Patty, Hugs
Dunes sorry you lost Peaches. Happy that Soebe the parakeet . Dusty's handsome. If you are still having sleep issue's there's a bunch of links in the topic box. How's your Mom?
Spookie, DS's GF is moving in in a couple weeks. All but one of the roommates has moved out. One bought a home and the other got engaged.
Blondie, second the thought about you "perking up soon".
Rose, the George story was cute. Dh's boss had an African Gray which would whistle for the dog and say "Bart wanna go out". Dog would go nuts. He was finally banished to the office. At the office he would mimic the fax machine and the telephone, the boss calling for different employees. He'd ring the phone then carry on a conversation that was similar to Bob Newhart's comedy sketch.
Have a nice rest of the day

thanks for the bird info. I think I will not get a nesting box and hope nothing happens. Maybe they have been having a good time for awhile now and I just caught them in the act recently!
Finally found a shirt to wear that wasn't itchy! Don't you hate it when your nerves are on overload....whewwwwwww, finally comfy.
Hope everyone is having a good day

JWOO found it Libbey>>Rock Sharp >>Normandy 3005. Pretty. Trying to C&P an example This could be hard. Multiple sites are not allowing C&P. Got one. Sorry the pic doesn't do the stem justice. Little fuzzy .
http://www.replacements.com/webquote/RKANOR.htm
Roughly, I think Libbey produced Rock Sharpe, but not under Libbey's name. I have a set of dishes that were produced by Mikasa but with name of Studio Nova, pattern is Orchard Jewels. Going after a different market. I surmise that was the same with the Rock Sharpe. Normandy is a very pretty pattern. I'll watch for it
The one source said it was produced between 1939 and 1949Trying to track history. Learning lots, but it's a diversion of the quest
Found it, great history. The link to the page. Libbey produced the stem that was etched by Cataract/ sharpe
http://www.baharris.org/Stemware.htm
<strong><a href="http://www.baharris.org/images/LibbeyStemware/libbey_rock_sharpe_3005.jpg"><img unselectable="on"></a>
<small>3005</small></strong>Notes:
This is called Libbey Rock Sharpe because it is a Libbey Glass Company's blank (Stem line # 3005) which Cataract-Sharpe Company used for their cuttings (Pattern Cut 3005-5) in their Rock Sharpe line. Cataract- Sharpe Company purchased blanks from Libbey for their fine cuttings. This stem was made during the 1930s - 1940s and has Libbey's chip-resistant "Safedge" feature which Libbey introduced in 1924. This pattern is featured in Bob Page and Dale Frederiksen's book, "A Collection of American Crystal", pg. 66, 1995. Quoted from this book:
The Cataract Company was a high quality cutting operation that decorated fine handmade
stemware supplied by other firms. For many years, Cataract-Sharpe had purchased blanks from the Libbey Glass Division of Owens-Illinois and decorated the crystal at its factory in Buffalo. The company made no glass itself. Cataract-Sharpe cut many intricate, deep-cut crystal patterns. Many of the designs were ornately done and brilliantly polished. A fern-like design was a very typical design for Sharpe and it appears in a variety of their cut patterns. In the 30's and 40's, the company widely promoted its Rock Sharpe Crystal products in many of the major women's magazines. Rock Sharpe was some of the best-selling stemware in American during that period.0 -
My maternal grandmother had a canary that you couldn't get it to shut up when you had music on. It would even sing if there was music playing on tv.

LOL@Susan. I'm loving all the bird stories. I don't know what kind it was that my friend had but every time the phone rang it would proceed to yell hi grandma and then lots of stuff that the family said about grandma when grandma was not on the phone. Too funny. I was always afraid Peaches was going to tell my mother about me smoking (back before the cancer fun began). He didn't, although he did say cigarette when mom wasn't there. The other day I was upstairs in my bedroom and I heard Soebe say cigarette. He knows all the words Peaches knew and now all Dusty knows, and he talks almost incessantly. Anyway that night I dreamed I smoked.
I've noticed birds particularly like to talk when I'm having a conversation. Maybe music serves the same function, MO.

Teka, Please, stop it's upsetting everyone.

ok....back to bird talk....why don't mine talk? They just look at me like entertainment I read somewhere that if you have two it's harder to get them to talk cause they communicate with each other. I have them between my front room and hair salon (used to be dining room). I kinda figured the first sound they would make would be blow drying noises. They don't even do that. Which I should be thankful for. Wish I could have trained them to say something.
Peace and love and chill to all
0 -
You say chili? You're having chili! I LOVE that, with homemade beans!
Also, the only birds that talk are owls.... that is your whole problem! You must trade them in and get owls.... problem solved.
0 -
I'm out of the bird loop....the only bird story I have is that a couple of years ago we found a dove sitting in our garage. He had flown in there and was just perched on dh's tool boxes. He had some sort of tracker on his leg, but it was the strangest thing. We took that as a good omen

I agree, peace, love, chill....and chili!
((hugs))

remember Pedro...the carrier that landed in my backyard and stayed for awhile. Should have kept him. We do have owls in the neighborhood, maybe I'll try to catch him...lol
What do they say besides hoot...or as patty would say.......hootie hoot. At least I think that's what she say

we actually tried raising parakeets. Had about 30. Never had any luck. We've had talking parakeets and cockatiels, but they were "onlies". You have to pick a phrase and repeat over and over and over............ Till you dream it! For some reason, only the males will talk. At least for us!
We taught various birds, gimme kiss, wanna get smacked? Kissy sound heeeerrrree doggie, bad bird, gimme kiss
One learned his name, Mr Big Stuff
I don't remember what all else they learned. Patience and persistence

I sometimes deliver for Meal on Wheels. It doesn't take long and everyone is very nice and happy to see you.
