    Jazzy, what is A1C ?

  • jazzygirl
    jazzygirl Posts: 12,048

A1C measure the blood glucose levels over a series of months (120 days). It is a way to see your blood sugar levels over a longer stretch of time vs. the fasting glucose levels. Diabetics have it pretty regularly to check their sugar levels.

My fasting glucose has always been good, one time it hit 100 which was the beginning of pre-diabetes. In 2012, my PCP wanted to check my A1C and it was elevated, in the pre-diabetic zone. She said I needed to work on my diet, exercise, some weight loss. Right after that everything else happened. During my physical the following summer, we did the usual fasting check but she and I both forgot about the re-checking of the A1C. Because of everything else that went on. So we did that test againg too, and it hit the bordeline as diabetic.

I gave up sugar immediately, limit my carbs now, exercise more regularly, have lost weight/fat, and it went to normal, then up to pre-diabetic range again, and wanted to see how things are going with some changes I have continued to make since last time. She likes to check it every 6 months and last August was the last time so we are due. I do check my blood sugar at home regularly and am on a low dose of metformin. Still probably considered more pre than true diabetic, but trying to make sure we don't go there.

My furbabies have stayed close to me today, guess they must be picking up on the mood that I'm in today. On a good note, I found out I have a ride to my next appointment with the PS.

ok,here's 2 blocks I stitched. The one on the right is way to small in the rectangle so I need to see if I can enlarge the design. Have software for that. It's 8x18", one of the bigger blocks.

Mommy, " just because you can doesn't mean you should" a montra on the TE, biginner primer thread. Be good to yourself and don't overdo. Ask me how I know. And it doesn't matter that it doesn't hurt. It will take a couple months for the insides to heal. And sorry about your GF.

Someone, what are Als? I'm assuming something to do with chemo

sassy, pretty plate, looks like diamonds.

I read the books, don't know if I'll see the movie. They said out of 2 hours, only 15 minutes of sex scenes. No frontal nudity of him, only her of course, probably why it's rated R.

Blondie, glad you're enjoying your vacation. Hope your kids will treasure you more when you get home.

Got my taxes done, refund will help with the credit card. Hoping to go to Ireland in the fall with my SIL, so need to pay off the card to reuse it! I think it's getting to be a definite yes for the trip.

Spookie, Sorry and sad about your friend. Will keep you and her in my prayers Do you mind saying who it is, we may know her?.......................I wasn't suggesting you do anything different on D3 & Ca++. I was on a quest to find out what is being stated as a daily or monthly dose ranges. I Don't like it if I feel out of date. I Like it even less if ex-Endo doc could have safely had me on a higher dose without always insinuating a potential kidney problem. The same ex-Endo doc that failed me re: thyroid. Phooey on him.  Only started the quest. The four studies I started with all have ambiguous conclusions. These big retrospective studies lead the way for todays recommendations. Again, it's not good when they don't produce definitive answers. Somewhere there is info I haven't found yet.

Jazzy, I won't get on the soapbox about Glucose levels Yet --LOL. When your HBA1c comes back remind me. BTW when HBA1c was introduced in the late 90's, I felt it fell into the category of "best things since sliced bread". My A1c never moved off 5.4. This last time 5.7 not happy. Stupid thyroid.

Blondie, thanks for all the answers. You painted a great picture of how you are doing. TV's in each room? It wouldn't be bad there if you could just taste the food. Bummer. Any chance they can get you into assisted living? Would that be something you would want to do? Getting the system to work for you is all in how you use the words. All in how you use the words. We have nurses here that know what words to use. You fit the criteria, you just don't know it. I'm not suggesting anything illegal. The system will "activate", if you use the right words. Part of that is getting a Social Worker to ask the right questions. If trying to get into assisted living is something that you think would be good, Littlegoats, Rosie and I can guide you :)

Looks like her bf got something wrong, at least for now. She felt ok enough to send a text that she was waiting for a lumbar puncture. Her BCO name is Delirium Pie.

I wasn't given any pain meds. Not that I didn't ask. You'd think an NSAID would be okay 4 weeks and 1 week after the biopsies, so I took an Aleve last night. Today both breasts are swollen and off-kilter, so I'll need to just keep icing. I'm very pissed off about the blank stare I'm getting every time I ask anyone for pain relief.

yes, this is a new made up holiday, I learned about a couple of days ago when a tennis buddy invited a group for coffee. I show up & the ladies brought little gifts, chocolate & stuffed little animals.

I, of course, show up with nothing, other than enough cash for a hot chocolate. Then I find out its a new BIG deal......

Chevy, we are all here to learn. But when you read this, forget about GALENTINES DAY, it is now Valentines Day. We will remind you next year.....he. he.

So, I am asking you allimage

Went to a get together tonight with some friends and had a really fun time. I learned tonight the state legalized pot yesterday.

Jazzy. YAY for New Mexico. This will be the trend for all states. It all comes down to money. Colorado is reaping a huge economic benefits as the article states. There's been a documentary on T V for a couple months now talking about all the benefits and downfalls. The benefits are far outweighing the downfalls. May have the number wrong, but Colorado tax from sales was 54 Million.

Florida REPUBLICANS have presented a bill this session. Previously, they have been against any form of legalization. BUT when it was on the ballot last fall as a constitutional amendment for medical marijuana and lost by only 2%(58% yes vote-----60% need to pass) They got the message. Problem is the Republicans are presenting it for medical marijuana. Get real. Colorado has done it right. Oregon is fully legal like Colorado, but didn't plan well. They are up to their eyeballs in grass and can't get it to market.

Owlies...........On a different thread there was some info given that put the Op in harms way. You know me had to work it. May sound boastful , but I was very happy with my post.

Yes Sass! HAPPY VALENTINES TO Y'ALL! And that was GREAT advice on that other thread! I added my experiences to it.... I mean the ones I can talk about.... Ha!

But that is so true, about sometimes we think we can handle things going wrong with us, but when we can't or THey can't, then we have to try something else! I really have to be careful with this Asthma.... Most of the time things are perfect, but when the run is pulled out from under me, I can get into trouble so FAST!

So with something like that, it's just best to always be prepared... I'm lucky a phone-call to my Doc, or her team will help me get something fast.... I talked to someone who is still waiting for ..... OH! It's the gal across the street.... She has Kaiser, and is having a heck of a time getting surgery scheduled for her ankle, which didn't heal right after a break, and now her leg.... some sort of problem with a tendon? Or something?

She has to wait, and it has been over 3 months, to get any kind of surgery scheduled..... Do any of you gals have that problem?

Yes, that whole thing about legalizing weed, doesn't seem to even be in the news anymore over here.... We read about all the benefits, for the State.... But honestly I can't see any big deal about any MORE people getting into trouble with smoking grass, than there ever was.I think responsible use is the most important thing.... I mean you don't see people wandering around stumbling all over the place, like you would think! Winking Driving DRUNK is so much worse.... I have no sympathy for people getting drunk.... Probably because I knew what it was like growing up around that.... I just can't stand being around a drunk....

And I don't even KNOW anyone who gets high.... I don't, but I'm crazy enough.... Ha, ha! And I don't have any pain.... mostly..... so I don't have to get a prescription for THAT. I KNOW the uses for it in controlling seizures, etc.... and that is great... but it's just not for me! I'm just happy I got a Handicap placard for my car! I feel "special".... SillyHeart

holy crapoly, Mamma Ray.......so sorry, I knew you had a scan but did not know they gave you bad news....

I just looked at your signature line. Bone mets? Did they do a biopsy ?

I hate this stinkin discease. No slap, virtual hug, & lots of anxiety meds....

  • Hey MammaRay, no slapping here, just support, hugs, and love today. Happy Valentine's Day!!

I read it all too, and obsess about it since I am Stage IV, ain't no 5. But knowledge is power, and power is control. While reading bad info and Dr. Google, doesn't help, it does provoke seeking the truth about our disease. And yes it is ours, and we all make the best choices possible with the information we have. And we all have our hot mess days, but we also have more great days than bad.

Today is a whiteout here, I can't even see the Lake and I live on the Lake in a high rise on the 10th floor. All I can see is heavy snow blowing West to East. So a good day to stay in for sure! So I am thankful for a nice warm apartment today! I can chase dust bunnies instead.

Are you having any treatments now? I am in rads, but for some weird reason I think chemo was easier for me. I guess maybe because I had the down time in between, and now I go 5 days a week to rads. But I only have 13 more. Then I don't have a clue what is coming next. That makes me crazy not knowing.

I hope you take the time to enjoy the day, it is right in front of us, so I am going to do some very needed cleaning today. It will be nice to get something done, and keep me busy. Perhaps a small project to keep you busy for the afternoon may help.

Stay in, stay warm and safe. The wind chill is bitter and below zero with 40 mph winds gusting off the Lake. Brr!

  • MammaRay, No apologies necessary. Good point, we all know we could be worse, but I am buying all the time I can! :)

    jazzygirl Posts: 12,048

MammaRay- I am sorry too about the stage IV news. I knew you had the PET scan, and was hoping for better news here.

On the subject of Xgeva, I took the Prolia form of this drug (denosumab) to help my bones from the AIs recently. My MO's office told me they have had some excellent results with this drug to strengthen the bones for anyone dealing with cancer treatments, with minimal SEs. They said they use it a lot for people with bone mets with good results. So I hope that will help you with this.

Hug sister, I feel for you today and wishing you better days.

MammR, I got to meet Chrissy B when she did her USA tour a few years ago. Just as Wren said she's had bone mets since 2003. She was teaching me about mets. Finally, the solidifying thought for me from what we talked about was---If you have mets, bone mets is the better of all the evils.

This is a post of our Smarrty's. The strength in this post hit me as so simply true, I reposted it in the Just Diagnosed -Get-Prepared thread. Many interpretations can be made. One I think is staying in the moment.

MammaR earlier when I said each new something messes with our spirit. It brought back a memory from a few years ago. Background. On the day I was dx'd with BC, I was also told I had a brain tumor. No particulars, just a brain tumor. We went through the standard BC stuff for the next year. Dh was dx'd 3 months after me. He passed in 2010. Just when I felt like getting back into life in 2011. "Little Bean" started to grow. It came out with brain sx in March 27th, 2012. Through the whole time from day one it was believed Little Bean was benign. But there was the nagging feeling of what if it isn't. That feeling escalated until the words of Benign Meningioma were received after surgery.

On April 8th 2012, I wrote these words to Bluebird Essa. "the other thing I learned from the crainiotomy. Cancer WILL NEVER TAKE MY PEACE AND CONTENTMENT AGAIN----EVER. Whatever may happen in this life, I will not EVER give it that power AGAIN.  It robbed us , as a thief, of 3 years of our lives. Cancer may try to be a thief again, I may ultimately feel cancers hatred, it may kill me, but it will never be let into my soul and spirit again." Getting teary. I did let it rob me again with the bladder cancer scare recently. I hope those words help you in some way. I know I need to put them someplace to remind me. My soul and spirit, your soul and spirit, and everyone's here are too important. L&H&P's sassy
