Sas: could you pop over to this thread? Hoping you could help this woman with facial expressions, etc,,, what to look for in a nonverbal patient to indicate pain? The patient is Stage IV, and mentally challenged,, and unable to communicate at all. Thanks.

Re: the glass angel. People must think us strange. When I brought her home, I placed her in different parts of the house. I thought it odd that she didn't look beautiful in the way I perceived her. But in both pics from your house , she is special. She must have been meant to find you Glennie taking a look. BBL

Loverly- how beautiful is that photo. Picture perfect moment. I hope your sis and husband have a beautiful life together.
I think digital photography has done so much to make sure that you get a good photo on a special day. I remember years ago when people hired a photographer to their wedding photos and then the failed pictures that were a result days later in development. Now if one is blank, blurry, etc. you go "click" and another opportunity has been captured.

Well I have to say I have never had a virtual Birthday Party and cards! It was wonderful thank you! My DD3 loved the dancing cat with shakers.. the 12 days of Nursing Xmas was pretty funny and all the virtual cakes and flowers...yum! I remember many decades ago having a very large patient with mental issues take all her clothes off scoot into the hall naked screaming her head off. I was beside myself. I called the house supervisor an unflappable woman pleading.. "please come help me, come quick." When she came up she turned smiling and said.."my now you really do have problem!" There were patient's family members coming out scared about their loved ones. It was one of those shifts... to remember or forget.... Then in nursing school I had a patient in a psych facility come up to the desk in the middle of report dripping water and bubbles of shampoo. He just came out of the shower... buff and bucky naked. "what do I do now," he said? I told him to "go rinse off and then get dressed." My therapeutic intervention for the morning- haha. Later back in our nursing lab there was much laughter over my interrupted report! Sometimes you just have to have nerves of steel. Nursing is not for the faint of heart. Oy the stories I could tell... of tattoos everywhere... and I do mean everywhere..owie how completely drunk were you? I don't miss it. Retirement is good.. athough some folks like Sass don't retire they turn into information relay centers. Which is great if you have the stamina!
I have been sleeping lots and run out of steam. Home Health nurse came out today and she did the drain and got 450 more then I did Tuesday because I can lay down. When I do it I have to sit to see what I am doing.. hard and the fluid pockets. So 1650 out - yay. The fluid shift always makes me tired and wonky. My DH just made mash potatoes with buttermilk... I asked why do these taste like this? I think I need to go assist in dinner. Hmm.. save my DD3!
Thank you! My DH loved the pumpkin spiced station wagon! OMD you know stuff like that will come back into style!! Scary.

Rosie - I was fresh out of nursing school working night shift on a step down ICU. Elderly gentleman up to use urinal and he began reaching for my boobs, semi darkness so they didn't wake completely. I said Mr. ---- what are you doing. His reply - I'm just reaching for a little titty. My excellent nursing school response - You must be feeling better.

Rosie, oh so happy you enjoyed your party YAY. LOL "Sas has turned into and information something". AND this is retirement. I musta worked 40 hours this week. It was ten hours of straight typing today, with no fun. Now typing for fun and love. When I was 30--1980. I went to a hypnotherapist with the express request to get me to stop working in my sleep and to not feel like I always had to be working at home. It worked--kinda.
Loved your buck naked stories. Of course will be trying to remember too. The next few days should be fun as everyone remembers stories. Your's certainly take the cake though
Lilgoats, the little ole men were always going for the 'Titties'. It was like a license for old age men to cop a feel.

Glennie, Lordy, been sitting at this machine and typing for 10hours. Let me know what you think of the nonverbal assessment post. After that post was done. I took a post from several years ago about pain for verbal patients and posted it after the nonverbal post. I took the opportunity to revise b/c of my new learning re: opiods . Krips, the old post sucked. The writing was awful. Originally, it was written at 1:20am and I'm guessing with some wine. I tweaked it --ALLOT. Probably, could use a few more tweaks, but I'll catch it the next time. Thank you for the opportunity, to work on that thread.. That old post was a complete embarrassment.

Glad to hear you got some fluid removed. I can only imagine your body must react to that and feel better, but then tired.
I love mashed potatoes, enjoy those! Comfort food if ever there was any. I think I will go find a pumpkin beer.....

Ladies, we are closing in on a THOUSAND pages. Not many threads have lasted that long. It was around pg 180 when I came and made this my home thread and invited folks to come for the ride. Then others came too. We are a chatty bunch. Fifteen pages should be about Tues/wed., I'm guessing. Our next celebration is for I000

Sas: I think that was really helpful with the nonverbal assessment. Hoping that helps Kathy out a lot. She seems to be quite worried about her SIL and in need of assistance. Thank you for taking the time to type all that out for her.

My poor DH remade the tatters... ugh straight buttermilk too sour! ewww. I made the meatloaf. I am sure that those poor souls who work the ER and some home health stories (from co-workers) have trumped anything I have experienced in my career! Hilarious. I looked forward to hearing the stories. Lovemygoats- great response; amazing what people think they can get away with. My DD2 tells me wonderful stories from working at her coffee house! The pick up lines men have tried on her have left me speechless and in stitches. I guess every job has it's stories. Nice we can share and get a laugh.
Tomorrow I put my DD3 to work making more homemade apple sauce and chutney from our dwarf apple trees. Then I will try some vegan muffin recipes to send to DD2 who starts back up to college. She has a bad habit of just not eating and running late to class, so I am preparing freezer full of grab and go. My 14 year old loves to cook and is very gifted in the kitchen... clean up could be better but she is doing well cooking and baking. I want to put her to work helping her sister survive her new vegan diet decision.
I love watching the tiny house series and get wistful. I would have loved to have the health and stamina to live like that once the kids moved on. Of course it is not to be. I admire the movement of downsizing our foot print and intentional living. It's kind of like RV living,, only you build it on a trailer and haul it. It's a fun series - modern day gypsy wagons. The folks get so creative in their designs.

Morning Glories! Sass, I read what you posted on the other thread, about Pain, and management.... I copied and pasted and I'm printing it off...I think it's good to know... just in case.
My friend Carol, has the issues with non-communication... she TRIES hard to get her point across, but it comes out as yelling, and garbled words and frustration... I don't know how her care-givers can interpret what she wants, or needs! I know she enjoys being around "people"...but when it is over, I don't think she has any memory of this....... Like she can't think for herself... she is just there.... for the moment.
She started hollering, and making facial expressions, and I thought WTH??? But then her BF got up and said she needs to use the bathroom...! I jumped up to move the TV tray, because she was trying to get to the bathroom with her wheel-chair... He went in to "help" her... Don't know how she even does that..... She is just "there" for the moment and it's like it is "empty" in her head..... she can say YES, or NO... but trying to put a sentence together is just a lot of "sounds" she makes...... And she is no better than the first time we saw her....
I read all about other's experiences with Aphasia, and how long this lasts, and what families can do.... but I just know that every case is different.... And then we went to see Theresa yesterday at the Assisted Living.... and that was okay, but MAN, it just drains your heart and brain to see this stuff going on.... with my friends! And I DREAM .... like I'm reviewing everything in my head! And I can't do anything about it or change anything!
And on a happier note... Our girls and Grand-sons drove all the way back to San Francisco from Pebble Beach, and southern Calif, to their Hotel on Lombard, and went to the AC/DC concert last night! Pictures from the Giants stadium, before the concert started! They will be back "home" on Tuesday! Glad we can enjoy this trip with them, from our HOME.... Ha!
