"Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual. - See more at: https://www.functionalmedicine.org/about/whatisfm/#sthash.l8TAPH8M.dpuf "

At a point going through BC, brain tumor, thyroid cancer I felt my care was totally fractured. For decades I had seen care disintergrate into docs for every body part. But now I was deep into the system. I had hoped my Big Wig thyroid doc would be able to get a handle on the scenario b/c the cancers/brain tumor were all connected on an endocrine level. At least that's what my research had shown. To no avail.

My PCP is wonderful, she does much more than the average doc, but time is her enemy. She has such a following of patients b/c of her care, that over time her ability to spend the time she once did is now limited. Irony.

It's important to learn as much as possible about whatever is going on with yourself. Then following through. The ideal is to create a plan with your PCP. But if that isn't being done, you can actually create your own plan.

I created my plan, but have fallen off the timetable. The time change though isn't critical. I set my plan with all the work-ups to be done in January. That way if something popped up it could be handled timely. The only thing off schedule is the colonoscopy b/c of the shoulder injury. Positioning for the scope couldn't be safely done. I've worked at the tableside for scopes. To be done well, positioning is intrinsic to allowing the scopist to view the colon well.

What makes our lives very much more difficult than the average patient is our treatments create so many other problems. That one sentence is huge. Each cancer patient here understands the breadth of that statement. So, many women describe that they were well before the fateful day of diagnosis. Then we went down the rabbit hole.

So sorry ,Lori!! Forgot to welcome you. Where is me manner?

Oh Phyllis, thank goodness, the guy has pants on...well, at least in my imagination.

Watch, ShepK will try to post something to disturb my vision.

It is the truth, Ms. Sas? It's called the domino effect. Nah, I just made that up. Iatrogenesis is the monster under the bed I am afraid of because I have seen it in my line of work too often. We are not as advanced as we thought.

Sas fractured is a very good word. We felt same about my late MIL. Here we have multi disciplinary teams (which I know exist in some US hosps) but not where MIL was in South FL. Multi-disciplinary means all your experts in one hosp, round table conferences with all the experts involved in your care talking to each other and sharing info. It is good.

sassy the fire is under control and most of the city is intact. Many homes have burnt down in theresidential areas. The evacuees have a long wait before they get to go home, if they have a home. Yes you have sent a military helicopter flying supplies to the sight.

Welcome to the new ladies. Purple, dexamethasone is certainly an eye opener and Phyllis I would take that chemo doc any day.

The baby pictures are wonderful, keep them coming.

Class ended officially for me this past Monday. The last speech that we had to do was a memorial or eulogy. I did mine on my older sister. Got an A-, that was the best grade on all the speeches we had to do. Just waiting for grades now.

How much longer do we have to stay up Smaarty?

How's everyone doing? Been lurking, but focusing on healing.  Had my first night alone last night and a good day by myself.  Am doing good.  No narcotics today, just ibuprofen. Hope everyone has a great Thursday.

Hey there, Sensi. Good to hear you are on the mend. Are the drains gone? Hated them because they pulled the skin plus I had a reaction to the tubing. The first shower after surgery was heaven for me.

Still have the drains. I'm between 30-40 cc's in each one. Doc said I can have them out once they are under 30'cc two days in a row. Day after I got home the R side stopped flowing, was told to keep an eye on it. Finally was able to get unclogged myself and put out over 50 cc's in two hours. The only thing tonight is the drainage seems to be a little darker again.  Will see how it is in the am.  I can't wait to sleep in my own bed again!!  Love that I am able to shower.  It feels so good.

Mommy- I am glad your class is done and you did well. I remember you talked about loosing your older sister awhile back and how much you miss her. I am sure she was smiling from the other side as you remembered her to your class.

hi Sensi, was thinking about you this morning. Remember that the drains are our friends. Be good to yourself. Reading? How's your pup?

Where's Purple, did we scare her off?

So Wrench, what do you do?

I suspect she was Jazzy. Especially since I talked about her cats and her pranks. Towards the end of my speech, I started feeling the tears coming but I made it through and got back to my seat in the rear of the class before I let go.
