MRI
Hello! I am 47, I was diagnosed with DCIS (grade 2) last week. My second mammogram confirmed a small (3mm) spot near my nipple. I met with my oncologist on Thursday for my first appointment with him, pretty uneventful since I haven't had my MRI yet. I am scheduled this Thursday for my MRI and then meet with the breast surgeon the following week. As of right now, I am anticipating just having a lumpectomy and radiation and I was told by my radiologist that most likely my nipple will be removed as well because it is so close to the DCIS.
My first question is for those who had MRI's, did your MRI find more than your mammogram found?
And does anyone have experience with lumpectomy with nipple removal and how the recovery was?

Hello Arkansas, it's indeed normal to have the concerns you are having. Pamper yourself and rest easy as the waiting is often the most challenging.
My nipple had been removed during my first surgery as it was medically necessary. It was an uneventful experience and you'll get through it. Recovery from surgery was easy for me and hopefully it will be the same for you.
You're correct that MRIs are ultra sensitive and can see tiny lesions which is beneficial for early stagers. It's not uncommon for MRI and most beneficial for surgical planning.

About your MRI question - yes, MRIs often find additional areas that mammograms miss. I had a patient named Sarah last year with a similar 3mm DCIS who was shocked when her MRI found a second small spot nearby. It's actually quite common and helpful for surgical planning.
Regarding nipple removal with lumpectomy - Sarah's recovery was surprisingly straightforward. She had about 7-10 days of soreness but was back to most activities within two weeks. The cosmetic outcome was better than she anticipated, with good preservation of her breast contour despite the nipple removal.
The best news is that DCIS has an excellent prognosis when caught early like yours! Sarah was most nervous about the MRI itself, but found it went quickly once she got in there.
Bring headphones if they'll let you use them - makes a huge difference with the noise!
