Verzenio What has worked for you diarrhea

Hi

Starting Verzenio today. Dr is starting me on 50mg 2x per day, to ease me into it. Do you have a regime that has worked for you in combatting diarrhea? I am going on vacation with my kids and I don't know how I'm going to manage it other than trying Imodium. TIA

Edythe105 - I never really experienced the extreme diarrhea problem, although I know many have. My thought has always been that even well before I started Verzenio, I have eaten daily probiotic yogurt (6 oz) and daily fresh unpasteurized sauerkraut that I get at natural foods co-op (at least half a cup). I started on 150 mgx2 and then after several months of bad fatigue, went down to 100 mgX2, due to really bad fatigue. Others make that same switch due to the diarrhea problem, so another option, if you wind up with the problem, would be to ask for a lower dose. I've taken Verzenio for a good two years now and have not had that terrible diarrhea problem ever. I do very occasionally get a "D" problem for a day or two, but I don't think it's due to Verzenio. At those times I take a rare Imodium. I only take one and it's plenty; works well for a good 2-3 days and by then whatever caused the problem has stopped. Good luck with this, I think you will gradually adjust and find something that works for you, but it might take some time.

@edythe105 In the laxative section, look for FiberCon or its generic calcium polycarbophil. (Imodium=loperamide worked too well for me!) After taking 2 of the rather large tablets at noon daily with a big glass of water, I was careful to stay upright, and did not go lie down.

This is a unique item in that it can work for both constipation & diarrhea by remaining in the gut. I’m a retired pharmacist who takes this myself. It adds bulk to the stool. I like @threetree’s dietary probiotic ideas.

I actually purchased a package of bowel incontinence products, like Depends, to wear on the plane for travel but didn’t really need them. I also did the dose reduction to 100mg twice a day. Hopefully you’ll get a nice long “run” on abemaciclib.

edythe105, I was started on 50 too, and didn't have any problem with it. When I was bumped up to 100 after 2 months, I had an occasional bout with D. After getting results from surgery, it's been worth it!!

I’ve been on Verzenio for 13 months. I was started on 150, after 9 months went down to 100 due to experiencing a lot of fatigue issues. I’ve had occasional bouts of D. The multi symptom Imodium always takes care of it. Another thing that helps is unsweetened apple sauce. If I feel any kind of stomach upset coming on, I immediately take Imodium.
Once my body adjusted to the Verzenio, I get D about once every 2 weeks. It’s been very manageable. I have found that I can’t drink coffee first thing in the morning, mid-morning is fine. 😀

When I have flown, I have taken Imodium to avoid any potential issues.
Hopefully you will easily adjust to it, especially since starting on a low dose. 🤞

edythe105 - I've been on Verzenio for exactly 1 month so my body is still adjusting, but so far, I've found it helpful to initially take half doses of anti-diarrheal or constipation meds when symptoms first hit to avoid complete blockage or opposite effects (which can be equally uncomfortable), and also to track foods that cause noticeable stomach issues. I had to make some dietary adjustments to include more lean proteins and back off some of the fruits/veggies which were a regular part of my menus, and am gradually introducing them back into my diet. For me, stomach upset really takes an emotional toll, especially if it affects daily or recreational activities and I've found myself getting frustrated with my body, often saying "What the heck - diarrhea/constipation AGAIN?" I've had to change my mindset to be extra gentle in how I frame my perspective on how my body is reacting to the meds. Being patient and compassionate when addressing all the crazy things my body is doing seems to help manage the physical side effects, and mentally, it gives me a bit of calm because I'm striving to accept rather than resisting. Our bodies have been through so much and they're doing the best they can! Hope this helps and blessings and strength to you as you continue with your treatments. 😊
