Discharge from surgery area pls need help
Dear beautiful community, my mom had breast cancer more than ten years ago. It was stage 3b.
She had surgery chemo and radiation. She had BMX. She had cancer in one breast but was afraid of recurrence in her other breast so she did BMX.
they made a mark tatto in her sides from where they did the surgery ( took of the breast) .
Now after many years she is having dischnage from there .
It’s watery discharge and no pain .
Any idea what it could be ?
My mom is now 72 years old . She started antibiotics we are worried maybe it’s cancer come back.
any one has any idea or went through same thing?
many thanks

Hello Zohra, how kind & caring of you to be concerned about your Mom. Apparently your Mom's healing was incomplete, unless she recently suffered an injury. Sometimes moms don't always share all their medical facts openly with the family because they're afraid of worrying those loved ones closest to them.
It's good your Mom is not in pain, but if she possibly develops redness, fever, chills, swelling, etc. please seek urgent medical care for possible active infection. Foul smelling, thick pus or brownish-green, brown/bright red fluid, increasing pain or spreading redness might also point to infection or other issue, which should be checked by a breast specialist.
If fluid can get out, bacteria can get in. Your Mom's breast surgeon or plastic surgeon might wish to possibly perform an ultrasound study. Her family physician might best refer your Mom to her original plastic surgeon or original breast surgeon. It could also possibly be incisional breakdown, although we are NOT doctors and cannot tell patients or caregivers what exactly you deserve to know.
Either infection or traumatic fat necrosis can lead to yellow discharge from incisions, but you stated your Mom's discharge was clear. Fat necrosis is a wound healing abnormality which tends to occur near or below the nipple-areola complex."
Unfortunately, we don't have a clear understanding of where your Mom's incision is and how her drainage is occurring. Anyway, eating a good healthy balanced diet while maintaining an active lifestyle will give your Mom's body the tools it needs to heal properly. Managing stress is of equal importance as excessive stress can possibly negatively affect your Mom's anatomy's healing potential. Uncontrolled blood sugar levels, insulin and immune system aging can impact anyone at any age.
Your Mom is blessed to have you and we wish you both well. Hugs to both!
