Excisional Breast Biopsy

Hello there. This is all so new and overwhelming, but reading your stories is so moving and inspirational.

I had an abnormal yearly mammogram in February with follow-up scans, an ultrasound, and a core needle biopsy in September. They were unable to obtain microcalcifications needed for testing after retrieving 15 tissue biopsies during my core need biopsy. I'm now scheduled for a reflector localizer placement in the morning and a right breast excisional biopsy on Wednesday.

I am so tired of not knowing. I try not to read so much on the Web. If anyone can offer encouragement or advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Below is a little more detail about my mammograms/ultrasound:

Bi-RADS Category 3

Extremely dense breasts, right focal asymmetry 6 o'clock in anterior depth.

Heterogeneous microcalcifications in the outer posterior that span 1.8 cm. Superior right breast faint microcalcifications behind the breast implant in the posterior superior right breast that may correspond to suspicious calcifications seen in the outer posterior breast.

Thanks so much.

Hi @pricecyn, I’m sorry the core needle biopsy missed the tissue with the calcifications. The savi scout should ensure the excisional biopsy removes the relevant tissue. There is no way of telling whether the area with the microcalcifications is benign by examining the imaging. Only the pathology of the suspicious looking tissue can do that. Hopefully the biopsy on Wednesday will be successful and you will get an answer a short while later. The waiting is really stressful, especially when things didn’t go as planned the first time. All the best for a successful biopsy and a benign result.
