Early stage lymphedema???

I’m starting PT after lumpectomy and radiation. I had cording, breast swelling and some pitting in my skin BEFORE radiation, and all of that has continued with increased nerve compression. I’m sure there is fibrosis occurring as well. I have no swelling in my arm yet. My PT has advised I wear a compression bra daily and sleeve for travel and repetitive activities.

I haven't “officially “ been told I have lymphedema, yet the therapy and guidance seems to be headed in that direction. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

    Hi @nope123 💗

Yes, what you’re describing is something many members experience, especially after lumpectomy and radiation. It’s not uncommon to have early or "subclinical" lymphedema signs — like breast swelling, pitting, cording, tightness, nerve symptoms, and early fibrosis — before arm swelling ever appears.

Many PTs take a preventive, proactive approach, which is why you may be advised to wear a compression bra and use a sleeve for travel or repetitive activity even without an official diagnosis. The goal is to protect lymph flow and prevent progression, not necessarily to label it yet.

Several members here have shared similar paths:

    • Breast or chest wall lymphedema without arm involvement
    • Early intervention with compression and PT
    • Symptoms appearing or increasing around radiation

You’re doing the right thing by starting PT early. You’re not alone, and catching this early can make a real difference. 💕
