Waiting for a second biopsy to learn the course of treatment

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma grade 3, stage 1 and triple negative in my left breast. After some tests and an MRI, a large mass was found in my right breast. Now I am waiting for my biopsy in my right breast to see if cancer is there as well. This will change the surgery and chemo treatment. It is hard to plan and even research. It is also scary.

  • I had a similar situation. Two IDC tumors in left breast, and presurgical MRI discovered something in my right breast that needed biopsy. I asked my surgeon if I could skip the biopsy, since I had already elected a DMX. He said yes, but MO said no, as the findings might change the type of chemo I was having. The biopsy (MRI guided) was the worst of all the biopsies I had (5 in all), but the finding was benign PASH. I stuck with my DMX decision, as I knew I never wanted another breast biopsy again. I remember bursting into tears when I told my husband that they had found something else and I needed another biopsy. It was terrifying. Even if your biopsy turns out to be cancer, knowing what you are dealing with is so much better than the uncertainty of all the preliminary tests. When I asked my MO for some Ativan she acted like I was drug seeking. The fear can be overwhelming, but it helps to remember that your team has successfully treated hundreds of patients; they will know what to do.

  • Hi @maggiehopley Thank you for sharing your story. It is a helpful reminder that my team has successfully treated hundreds of patients. I am sorry you had to go through that. Waiting is hard.
