Anyone Else Struggle with Pain after Unilateral Mastectomy?

Hello All,

I'm looking for insights on how you all managed pain after surgery. My Surgeon prescribed 10 hydrocodne (5 mg) and valium. The valium give me horrible nightmares and make me feel sick. I'm taking tylen consistently throught out the day but it's not helping much. I'd say I'm consistently at a 6.

Adding to this, my drain fell out the day after surgery. I went in for a follow up immediately the next day and they said not to worry about it, just look for signs of infection. At my one week post opp appointment today they Plastic Surgeon was concerned i have a lot of fluid buildup and I have an ultrasound scheduled in a couple of hours. He stated that if they find a lot of fluid they will put a drain back in.

I want to ask for more hydrocode but am afraid I'll be flagged as drug seeking. I've had surgeries before and never developed a depenncy on this med. Was anyone else still need narcotic pain relief and was your dr supportive of that?

Thanks so much.

Hi @lizzy333 welcome to Breastcancer.org. I’m sorry you’re dealing with so much pain on top of the worry about the fluid buildup. A consistent pain level of 6 is absolutely worth discussing with your surgical team, especially this soon after surgery. Please don’t be afraid to tell them exactly how much pain you’re having, that Tylenol isn’t controlling it, and that you’re unable to tolerate the Valium. You can simply ask what they recommend for better pain control. I’m glad they’re evaluating the fluid today, too. Please let us know how the ultrasound goes. ❤️

  • Thank you so much for the response! The ultrasound showed a lot of fluid so i'm waiting for an appointment to have a new drain placed. Fingers crossed it's soon. I did message the Dr and they called me a new prescription so I'm thankful for that.
