    CyndieLou--magnificent!

Goldie, my derm suggested CeraVe for maintenance and Aquaphor Healing Ointment for very rough dry skin on hands & heels. I once got, in the swag basket for playing a music festival, a tube of "Guitar Hands" cream. It softens skin that needs softening without dissolving necessary fingertip calluses. (If you already have an open fissure on your heel, avoid urea-containing foot creams). If you can wear Peds or other "footies" over the Aquaphor, that might help too. For cuticles, my nail salon owner advocates either sweet almond or olive oil. Nothing you can do about nails lifting, though, other than try and protect the surrounding & underlying skin. The cause is internal, alas.

I don't know that I could name every lotion/ointment that I have tried. Can't really say one is better than another. Kind of like putting lipstick on a pig, ya know? Take the lipstick off the pig, it's still a pig!

    Beautiful rings there Lucy!

Sandy, funny you mention to avoid urea, as that is what they suggest on the Xeloda thread! Unless you are just referring to the open spot on my foot.

Yesterday I was super fatigued, not sure what brought that on. Hoping today is better.

    Mornin'

Oh Cyn, just lovely and so very happy for you, it's funny how Lori and I pictured the whole wedding like we know what it should be like. Now we'll wait and see.

Oh Lordy Lori ur finger nails look bad, and such dry skin. I know nothing that u hven't tried yet, but ud think there would be something WOW My sister is now having her hair fall out slowly but it's leaving her, she's looking at wigs and she hates them all, so far her skin is all right. well not like yours.

I just had to stop a bit 3 calls in a row. Jeez it's Sunday--al emergency ones of course, well at least what I could understand.

SusyQ I know how hard it is to quit smoking, cuz I still do--I do stop however when I hve had operations for at least 2 weeks before nd yet I still go back. I do have STUPID written on my forehead.

Karen remember u have to come first right now so that u can be back to real normal, it's to bad what u have to go thru, but it's not important enough for u to concern urself. Go for any help u can get always. And the tattoos u get are nothing u don't even feel them, in fact I asked the guy doing it if he could put little lines around them so they would look like the sun, he said no and then he said ur done.Mine are still there but no sunshine. Even tho he laughed, he ruined my whole body decor.

Kim if I drank I would be all over these drinks, yummy, And I've always known u could be a teacher, just how u 'splain things to nus, I really don't blame those nurses for calling u, cuz ur so open to people and u are one smart cookie.

Sandy I'm sure u don't forget as much as u think. nd u have to go for the ugly sweater and I bet someone will say how pretty it is anyway. Someone always does.

Lori I was trying to clean a little in my room, well I found about 15 pills on the floor, now I have to match them up with what they are. But none are my pain meds, Never drop those. Oh I LOLed about the pig, fuuuny,,, When I worked in the drivers part of the DMV I mostly took pics. OMG people acted like we were pros and they should look that way, I did take a lady 3x, I think, finally I said to her U can pull a ducks neck all u want, but u still won't have a swan--I was mad BTW. so was she.

Well I'm planning on going to our party today, so I have lots to do--so far Leslie is too, we can only wait nd see.

    Hope everyone has good Sunday.

    Good Morning

Happy Sundayfunday!! 2 1/2 hours left of work before it gets fun here.

Lipstick on a pig had me giggling too.

Cami....our next step is going on a venue hunt once we are back in Florida. We know its going to be on the beach but want a beach front hotel for the reception. Glad you like the rings..

    Sandy, how are you feeling?

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Sunday, Funday! Bright and sunshiny here, and the temp is almost upto 20 degrees! We've got that intense, gorgeous blue sky we only see in the winter. Got to do some laundry today, but going to hang clothes on the rack and turn on the fan in the sewing room. Outside they'll just freeze and take 2 days to dry, and I will need work clothes tomorrow.

We hada lovely day with Mom and Dick and my brother Scott and his wife Earlene. The live about a 3 hour drive away, and Mom hadn't seen them since last Christmas. Usually Mom and Dick go down and visit with them in the summer, but Dick got sick and then Aunt Linda got sick, and that just didn't happen. Scott and Earlene were both surprised at the changes they saw in Dick, and in Mom. Scott and I decided that Mom isn't going to be cooking big family meals any more, we'll be going out somewhere to eat so she can sit with us and visit . I'm going to let Scott take care of telling Mom that, he's the baby and he can get away with things like that where I would get an argument. Anyway, Sadie got lots of attention, belly rubs, ear scratches and a new tug toy.

Goldie--I figure I'm entitled to get paid for the time I spent in the office and on the phone, and I know how to add notes to my time card and I know what to say to make it very hard for the company to not pay. The thing that gets me is that I have offered to mentor/precept new nurses to help with orientation since the Clinical Managers are back to doing double duty while they look for a replacement for the 3rd position. I noticed that position is being advertised with a sign on bonus! And no, I am NOT considering applying. Wow, your hands and nails look so uncomfortable. Those FU pills are really doing a job on your skin. It's so not fair that something so needed to keep the rat ba$#ard in line causes so much additional misery.

CynCyn--Beautiful rings! Is there a romantic proposal story to go with the rings, or was it a natural evolution of the relationship? If I'm being nosey feel free to ignore me!

Cammy--I do enjoy teaching, and actually like having the new nurses call me. Makes me feel like I'm still involved and still important! I imagine most of the calls you get on weekends are emergencies. Tis the season.

Happy Sunday Funday friends- been a girl on the go this week with many things going on. Weather here has been nippy and supposedly snow maybe today into tomorrow? Skies are sunny so I don't see it yet. We really could use some moisture, nothing in two months. I checked the weather forecast and hoping for some flurries while I am at the hot springs next weekend, but not likely there either. Going to start doing a rain dance/snow dance soon.....

I had another holiday outing on Friday with some friends to do a shop and stroll in our local Old Town. Started with some wine at a local bistro, then went in to the square to walk, shop, and ended up at a fab french restaurant we love and went to a couple years ago. I treated the gals to a fabulous bottle of end of bin french Cote du Rhone (Lunar Apogee) that pared well with everything we ate. I had the most delicious stuffed pork chops with apples and blue cheese, and we finished the meal sharing a wonderful choc and orange charlant. We were all home by
8 p.m. (and laughed that our normal bed time is earlier and earlier these days!)

I am on a break the rest of this weekend from social outings, but then have a get together with a friend tomorrow night for a light dinner, a client dinner on Tuesday evening, and then a special winter solstice event on Wed with my yoga community. I head to the hot springs next Saturday for three days and back down on Xmas day for more outings.

Goldie- mole is a sauce that is common in the Hispanic communities. I had it the first time in Puerto Rico a number of years ago, but think it is best known by the Mexican community. It includes chocolate, spices, seeds and other interesting things. I don't often order it because most places don't do it well, but this place in Santa Fe had some of the best I have ever had. Now I know when I need a mole fix, where I will go! My guess is you can find some restaurants your way that have it? It is really delicious!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mole_sauce

Your hands are very chapped and cracked friend. These treatments do a lot to our hair, skin and nails, don't they? I have very dry skin from the AIs, some hair thinning too, but no patches. I will throw in my new fav skin care creme finding anyone here may be interested. Especially good for the drier climates and called No. 7 and found at Walgreens. Sometimes they have a buy get one free thing and I love their body creme the best.

    https://www.walgreens.com/topic/brand/no7-beauty-s...

I am sorry you are tired too, hopefully you are getting some rest this weekend. Keep an eye on that fatigue.....

Chi- so how did the singing lesson go and the ugly Xmas sweater? I like the sound of that velour suit too, maybe you can wear that for something else? I hope you are feeling better?

Karen- I think your nurse practitioner has your best interests in mind. I agree you need to access whatever resources are available to you. Have you contacted your local American Cancer Society office? They seem to be a good resource for many things and may have had similar inquiries in the past around help for cancer patients with financial needs? It sounds like you have your feelings about your uncle sorted out. I had two really awful uncles growing up and the last of them left us last year. Life has taught me some people are in our lives to show us exactly what not to be. For some, tis the season to be ugly......

Cami- you have your party today and look forward to hearing how things go?

NM- so the getting paid for work outside of on site time is one of those "um, remember I am freelance now?" Keep your boundaries up as they still see you as an "other duties as assigned." I know I have shared before I have a client site I have worked at a lot here and often get those requests so sometimes we are constantly balancing the doing of favors vs. adding to the expectations. I hope they get those new people hired and can keep them so you can just be doing the work you want to. That is our job as freelancers, no other duties as assigned please!

Good to hear you had some nice family time. Lots of things this year to otherwise occupy everyone's time and attention. But holidays are good to come together with family and friends this time of the year. Sounds like Miss Sadie got spoiled with lots of attention?

Who am I missing? Dara, Celia C, Hsant, Mema, Genny, and everyone else, I hope you are doing okay.

I heard from my BFF late in the week that she also won't need to do the anti-hormone therapy as well as chemo. They have caught her BC super early (all DCIS I have learned, nothing invasive) but still may need rads and won't know until January. Gives her a break from all this for awhile. She is also learning the language to be able to tell other people to not expect things from her right now, both the people who want things from her or want her to come out and play for the holidays. I told her a simple sentence about being in cancer treatment and needing to focus on that right now.

That was the good news. I also heard from another BCO sister (not this thread) who may have Stage IV ILC. Cancer sucks.

Mema- I know you have lots going on and hope the apts are going okay......

Hope everyone has a good week ahead. Be safe if you are traveling anywhere for the Xmas holiday coming up quickly now.

Thanks for asking, ladies--over my cold now. Just a few throat tickles at night, probably due to molds in the unseasonably mild air. In full voice Friday night. And the sweater was a hit, though the moving LEDs confuse the hell out of my cats. Good thing there were no epileptics in the audience!

Meeting Gordy's girlfriend for the first time tonight when we take her to dinner. Found out her name when he tagged her in a FB post at a concert they attended, and I clicked on it--so now I've seen her photo too. Didn't try to friend her yet--that would've been kinda creepy.

Don't forget to tune in Tuesday night to wdcb.org (Cami, you can tune to FM 90.9, it's "in the hood" for you) to hear my duo Andina & Rich perform during the WDCB Holiday Hoot, which airs from 8-11 pm Central (9-midnight Eastern, 7-10 Mountain, 6-9 Pacific). We are on precisely from 9:54-10:07 pm, and in the finale, group carols & the theme from the classic holiday cartoon "Hardrock, Coco & Joe" (which I believe may be a Midwestern thing, as I'd never heard of it when I lived in NYC or Seattle). Wish I could invite locals to attend, but we don't have the concert hall this year, only the studio & small lounge--physical space will be tight but broadcast/webcast space will be unlimited! You will have to imagine the spiced cider & coffee, baklava, Guinness brownies...and my sweater.

Chi- glad you are better and glad you will get to meet Gordy's new GF. I hope it goes well, then if she is comfortable in awhile, a friend invite on FB is a great idea.

Some sunday afternoon music for you all. I love Renee Fleming (opera and more) and Greg Porter (one of my fav new jazz artist discoveries this year). The essence of NYC at holiday time here in this performance.

Renee Fleming is surprisingly versatile (especially the way she can isolate different registers for different styles). So is Sutton Foster, who I believe released an indie-alt-rock singer-songwriter album awhile back.

Lori, a mild urea cream (no more than 25%) is great for calluses and thickened flaky feet, but shouldn't be used on open wounds. (I got some 40% OTC in Germany, which would be prescription-strength in the U.S.).

Last night we went to a friend's house for munchies & desserts. He served some single-barrel Bourbons, Scotch and cream liqueur, but my fave was a 25-yr-old Armagnac that had hints of caramel & oranges. Lovely!

Chi- you are so right about Renee Fleming. I heard her for the first time back around 2002 on a CD with Dave Grusin (who is a legendary jazz artist, composer, etc. and lives in Santa Fe, NM). I fell in love with her voice and not a huge fan of opera, but have heard her do so many other styles of music too. I got her Xmas CD a couple years ago and that video is a clip of one of the songs she did live from that album. I am less familiar with Sutton Foster, but now will go YouTube some of that.

Another fun clip is something that was on CBS Sunday morning today. It is of a small artist town here that has the most fun Xmas scene going on. I used to go there regularly when I first moved here but have not been in awhile. I might have to go next week after Xmas and before they take things down. It is an old cold mining town turned artist community and so fun.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Monkey Day! Working for the Hospice people today. Hospice office party tomorrow. Work at home on Wednesday, work for Hospice Thursday, then start the weekend. Such a terribly busy life I lead! Got to get back on track with the decluttering and such, though. I have let that slide a bit, but at least I have been maintaining what I've done so far. Now If I can just teach Silly Sadie to pick up trash and put it in the trash can rather than taking stuff out of the trash can!

Wow, listening to the news talking about a black out at the Hartsfield/Jackson Atlanta airport, and all the chaos that has causes. What a

Jazzy--What a wonderful way to visit with friends! I hear you about the earlier and earlier bedtime. When I look outside and it's full dark at 4:30 I'm already thinking it must be almost bedtime. Have to remind myself that I can still do things even if it's dark out! As far as work goes I will put in for every minute I'm on the phone with a newbie. It's kind of sad that they feel like they can call me for help but not the Clinical Managers that are in charge of their orientation. But,not my circus, not my monkey, and every phone call is a little more pay in my check. It seems like an endless cycle, though, of hiring new staff, then pushing out the geographical boundaries and increasing the daily census, stressing the staff with longer hours and drives, then hiring more staff to catch up. Well, that's not my circus, either. I'll tell them what I can work, they'll either say yes or no, and that's all I need to worry about. As far as Silly Sadie getting spoiled, she certainly does love visiting family and getting all that attention. Good news for your BFF. Not so good for the other BCO sister.

Chi--Glad to hear the cold has run its course and in time for the show.

Jazzy-- I saw something on that old mining town, sounds like a blast!

Cami, what is causing Lou's hair to fall out? OMG, making your tats like a sun, you are so funny…..and might I add, CREATIVE! I also like your duck/swan version, never heard of it like that before. Can't wait to hear how the party went and I hope Les was able to go and enjoy.

NM, glad you had a nice visit with your family. My brothers do not go to my moms much either and the 2 that are furthest away are only 45 minutes. My younger brother only lives 10 minutes away and he takes her to her appointments when needed, but no one likes to go over there to sit and visit. The hands and feet are not fun, but doable. Loving your 12 days of Xmas DOTD's. It's the holidays, don't be too hard on yourself ie the decluttering. Why is it we want to go to bed when it's dark???

Jazzy, you are ALWAYS the girl on the go! Interesting on the mole sauce, have not seen it, but then again I am not very well educated on Hispanic food, as I don't do spicy. Thanks for the lotion advice, I just bought a huge bottle of one I haven't tried yet. I have tried sooooo many. And I absolutely keep a check on the fatigue. Yesterday was a much better day. Good news on your BFF not needing chemo or AI's.

Sandy, glad you are feeling better. Will the performance be recorded? No way am I up that late!!!! Y'all know how early I go to bed! How did the meet and greet go with Gordy and his new fling?

Dentist appt. for us today, just our regular 6 month check up and cleaning. Here is a pic of my foot. The split is starting to close up…for the 2nd time now! I never use to have this hard dry callused skin on my feet, they were always in good shape.

DOTD: Last night at the Palm (meeting Gordy's girlfriend, who is delightful) the four of us shared a bottle of 2013 Rodney Strong Symmetry, a meritage blend of 70% Cab. Sauv., with Petit Verdot, Cab. Franc, Malbec & Merlot. Very nice--smooth, not too tannic, great Cab. Sauv. bouquet.

I started off with a Negroni, curious about why it's so trendy now. Meh. Too bitter. Switched to champagne. (Nicholas Feuillatte Brut NV).

Good morning Loungettes........Just another early work morning.....I want to put my head down on my desk and go to sleep..the rain and cold doesn't help. But, two more wake ups until Vaca...Your right NM that Atlanta thing was a mess. Dodged another bullet with that...It happened over my weekend so didn't have to face the brunt of it...Just a little aftermath....and now with the Holidays upon us availability is an issue in most markets. Hope you are staying warm up there.

Sandy, the performance you are speaking of tonight...are they friends of yours? What genre of music do you perform?

Jazzy is busy busy.....guess everyone is this time of year.

Looking forward to after the holidays....always so stressful.

    Ya'll have a good day .

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Twofer Tuesday! Boy did things get interesting at Hospice yesterday. I was wondering why the Clinical Manager position that is posted hassign on bonus, and yesterday I discovered why. As you all may remember Clinical Manager #3 has left to be a Clinical Manager in another office. Yesterday I found out that Clinical Manager #2 is leaving to be the Director of that other office! So we will be down to just Clinical Manager #1 soon. Talk about a wild turn of events! Both Clinical Managers were at the Monday morning meeting talking about the crazy hours they work to support us and I'm thinking oh, yeah, I'm going to sign up for that kind of work schedule again, no thanks. So it looks like there is going to be one person doing the work of 3 for a while. No wonder the newbies' orientations are getting shortchanged. This is going to be interesting to watch play out.

Goldie--I'm not going to be hard on myself about the decluttering, but I am going to work on getting the momentum back. I'mhaving fun with the 12 Days of Christmas drinks, too. Ouch to the foot crack, glad it's getting better!

Chi--glad to hear Gordy's GF is a nice person.

CynCyn--I hear you about wanting to put your head on the desk. The minute I sit down in the recliner to read in the evening I nod off, and Sadie has to wake me up to go to bed!

    Good morning Ladies,

Cyn it's so nice to see u post again, I've missed you. Luv ur pics on FB, but ere we get to really talk about things.

Lori my sister gets a once a month shot, but I can't remember what it is and one SE is loss of hair and it's starting now and she's another one with super thick hair before---If I knew she ws ordering a wig I would have helped her cuz she ordered one that has blonde in it and she lways had dark dark brown and I get the colors better than she does, and she didn't notice any blonde in it but I saw it right away, of course she has gone lighter with her hair but still no blonde, so now start all over.

Oh our party was great, but no Leslie, but Joey had a great time cuz Jodie's DD was there for him, I never saw him til we left and I was glad he got a rest from all this turmoil. Jodie took care of me and I had plenty of good stuff---but we thought it was really getting late and it was 6:45PM, jeez we're getting old left about 9PM and super tired. My cousin <Joanne> stayed in bed til 11am on Monday--my phone started at 7am so I struggled to stay awake with my new coffee all day.Joanne did great tho, I can't believe she was in ICU just a couple of weeks ago--STUBBORN I told you.

NM every time I read the DOTD I sing it for some strange reason. It was nice getting together with ur family but as u said they all noticed the difference, kind of sad, BTW u do know it's a tribute to u that people call u, I would too.

Lori ur feet hurt when I see them, I have dry feet but nothing like that---there has to be something that can help you I hope, it looks hurting.

Jazzy ur videos again to the top of the chart, I think we all enjoy them busy lady. U sound like ur enjoying the season and u should be.

I was telling Joey the best part is looking forward for those weeks ahead of Christmas, then all of a sudden it's over, it goes by so fst.

Sandy I know that station, now I have to get Joey to bring me his radio, I think we only have one nowadays, but looking forward to it, I know u'll be great, glad u got thru the cold. BTW I would have looked everything up about ur DS girlfriend, u have restraint, but it sounds like u did enjoy meeting her and that's a good thing.

I hope our missing ladies are reading this cuz I miss everyone and hope they poop in.

Oh get this the day after Christmas my GFs and I are supposed to go out to lunch, Oy Vey I usually takes me 21 days to recover from anything now, so this should be interesting. I can't imagine my cuz driving but again u never know with her, she lives the furthest so we try to make it more middleish.

I think next week for work will be slow except for emergencies---everyone now is trying to get things fixed for the Holidays and I think that's why we are so very busy nd we do have huge projects going on---I had to turn down 2 people yesterday and I hate that. but these guys are working like crazy til all hours and so is my phone and trying to schedule is insane for me , anyway. But Dan, bless his heart was bragging about me Sunday and believe me I'm nothing to brag about and how I cheer them up during the day with my emails, I really think he means my typing cuz I never have time to correct it and when I send it to them all I see are red lines. But they've gotten to understand me so why should I take the time.

OK I've already stopped for calls so I'll be closing for now

I write and perform folk music (which is much broader these days than back in the days of the Weavers, Burl Ives and early Peter, Paul & Mary). I guess the definition would be mostly acoustic instruments (though these days we often plug acoustic guitars into amps and sound systems) with a bit of what used to be pre-Nashville country styles. But it's a really big tent these days--with a lot of overlap from pop, rock, country, Americana, blues & even a bit of jazz. Most of my repertoire is original, written in the folk style, but I "cover" lots of other songs in many genres.

The on-air party, the "Holiday Hoot," is an annual tradition on WDCB's "Folk Festival with Lilli Kuzma" weekly Tues. night show. All the performers are fellow members of the Chicago folk scene--veteran and newbie. We often cross paths and even co-bill at festivals, music conferences, showcases, writers' rounds, etc. I perform solo but also as half of the duo Andina & Rich, with my singing partner Stephen Lee Rich of Madison, WI. So we'll be the duo tonight. It's broadcast locally on FM 90.9 & webcast worldwide live (so Cami, you won't need Joey's radio--you can listen on your computer at wdcb.org).

Sandy, glad you like the new GF. Why no urea on the open crack?

Lucy, I thought you WERE on vacation, in TX. Well, I guess going to see your love isn't really vacation. Are you heading to ME?

NM, you can continue with those little chuckles as hospice tries to manage w/o you! That dang crack in my heel is taking forever, and dang does it hurt. Like Cami, I too sing the DOTD, how funny is that?

Cami, I get a monthly shot too, for mese bones, it's called Xgeva. I'm so sorry Les didn't go to the party. I assume Marty stayed home with her? How was FF? There is nothing to help my feet or hands, except quitting the drug. I do the same thing as to the "looking forward" to an event. Mainly when I go to MI, I use it with my mom. Part of the excitement is the time looking forward to it.

Jazzy, you are certainly getting in some Holiday fun with friends and good eats n drinks.

I guess we are going to head down to Phoenix for a few, leaving Xmas day, coming home on Thursday. Gonna hit the movies Xmas day with my step DD and her hubs. Seeing Star Wars at the Imax in 3D. I'm not a Star Wars fan, but seeing it in 3D at the imax will make it ok.

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Hump Day! The office party, which was a surprise Retirement Party for one of the nurses was a great success last night. She didn't realize it was for her right up until the announcement was made. It was really nice to be able to visit with her (she helped orient me when I started at the company) and with a lot of other people I don't get to see very often. One of the office workers was really celebrating, she signed on her new house just before the party. It's been such a hard year for her, she caught her husband videotaping her underage daughter in the shower (he was her step-father), moved out of the house, divorced him, dealt with the child porn/abuse issues, supported her daughter, found and financed a new home and kept working full time all this past year. I'm so glad the year is ending well for her and her kids.

Cammy--So glad the party was fun, and especially glad that Joey had a break with Jodie's DD. I bet he had a great time. Funny how different people see hair color differently. I am flattered when people call me and ask for help. And I enjoy helping people figure the computer stuff out. I've just got to remember not to give away that time. I imagine your e-mails are pretty entertaining to the guys, and they love that sort of stuff. So why bother to correct? Let them have their fun!

Chi--I missed the broadcast last night, got home from the office party just as it was ending. I was so disappointed that I didn't think to go online on my phone as I was driving home. Any chance it's recorded or re-broadcast?

Sadly, the broadcasts aren't archived. But we'll do it next year--and I may be on solo for a longer set this spring. Will keep you posted.

Lori, my tube of urea cream says not to put it on an open wound. If what's below the crack is still dead skin, I guess it's okay.

Heard this song on NPR this morning but with the BYU choir I cannot find a good link on line to share. So beautiful.

I'm likely not going to get caught up. Based on the party for my step mom's family and the last round of the red devil, I was out of commission on this site for a few days. :( And now I"m getting tired...which is kind of funny...but I have so much to do. :( I will try to get caught up the best I can tomorrow or Friday.

I just can't wait to see my daughter's gingerbread house. Super cute hair pics. This one she loves and did not want to take out, until she discovered how curly it made her hair. :)

    Hello Ladies,

I'm brand new to this forum, diagnosed in June, had 2 lumpectomies weeks apart. My 4 weeks of radiation finished Late October. I've been on anastrozole for 4 weeks. I hate it - back aches, stomach pains, headaches, blurry vision, carpal tunnel pain, memory loss, fatigue, depression. That being said - the oncologist strongly urged me to stop drinking entirely OR limit to 2 a week. So my story is I'm 64, lost my husband 5 yrs ago and built a circle of fun single woman who love to go out to eat and drink a lot. We all have our sob stories but we're moving on. I hate feeling guilty all the time. Two - three glasses a wine a night is average for me. I am having a rough time changing especially with all these other side effects I need to deal with. Has anyone just tried to be healthy in most areas but continued drinking? Without the dreaded reoccurrence?

    WARNING--LONG POST (but worth it)

I love wine, but my oncologist wants me to limit it to no more than 15 oz. a week. (My FP advocates a glass of red per day...except for ER+ breast cancer patients). So instead of up to 3 5-oz glasses a week, I go for up to 5 3-oz. glasses (and if I go smaller, say 2 oz., I can have wine every day). Now, wine had been a major hobby of mine. I went to a lot of tastings and winemaker dinners, and at any restaurant more upscale than an Applebee's I'd always ask for the wine list. Obviously, I couldn't keep that up.

So here's how I handle it. First, I will drink no wine that isn't absolutely wonderful. That means not the house red or white, nor a "champagne" that isn't made exactly like the real thing (i.e., if it's not from Champagne, it had better be made by the "traditional method" of the entire fermentation taking place in the bottle in which it's sold).

Second, I treat wine as a food, and when I've finished the food with which I've paired it, I stop drinking. (That helps at winemaker dinners, at which I usually have an ounce or less per course). At tastings, I taste, swirl, spit and pour out. That's the only way I can still tell what I'm tasting by the end of the evening.

Third, I'm lucky in that I never liked the buzz. I don't like feeling out of control. I was almost relieved to get asthma, because it gave me an excuse to decline the joint when it was passed around without seeming like a prude. I wish they'd make a non-alcoholic wine that tastes good.

Now, with wine as a hobby, you might think I have more than a few really good bottles on hand, and you'd be right. I always hated having to open them when I wanted only a small glass (or a few sips) and feel compelled to finish them within a couple of days. I was letting so many really great bottles gather dust in the basement, afraid that since they were one-of-a-kind (I don't buy cases) that once I opened them, they'd be gone forever. My husband was so frustrated when he wanted a wine he could drink freely, I would say "no, not that one, it's too good."

So fourth, about three years ago (even before breast cancer) I was watching an episode of America's Test Kitchen during which they were testing wine preservation systems, and I saw an unusual device. It was an injector that squirts inert argon gas into the bottle (like those pricey "Cruvinet" by-the-glass dispensers in wine-centric restaurants), but you don't open the bottle--you don't even cut the foil over the cork (there's also an accessory screw-top for screw-cap bottles). The device has a needle that pierces the foil and the cork and injects argon when you push the lever. You pour as much as you want (might take more than a couple of lever-pushes if you want a full glass). When you're done pouring, pull the contraption out--the argon is heavier than air and completely covers the surface of the wine, and it's inert (so it doesn't affect the wine). Put the thing on its stand, and leave the bottle where you want. It can keep a bottle perfectly good for months, even years (I have a Bordeaux I opened when I bought the device). Nobody knows how much longer the wine can last, because nobody's ever had a bottle spoil with it. You can use it on a bunch of bottles, having your own by-the-glass wine bar in your fridge. (Note--you can't use it on Champagne, for obvious reasons, since the contents are already under pressure).

You've probably seen the commercial by now--it's a Coravin, available at most cookware & larger liquor stores. But back when I bought mine it was pretty unusual and available only from the mfr.'s website. I got the Model Two, which was on special for $250. (There's a newer model now that runs less than $200). You have to buy argon capsules, but each capsule yields 15 glasses. Yeah, it's expensive---but so are all those bottles in my cellar. And if it lets me enjoy them without putting me at risk, so much the better.

Of course, occasionally I will have a glass of bubbly or two for special occasions. But then I teetotal for a couple of days (easier than I'd thought). And if you're out with friends, seltzer with lime in a wine glass makes you feel like you're drinking--think of it as ultra-brut bubbly.

Awww...too bad Sandy...let us know the next time and I'll be sure to tune in.

Hello Bella.....Dr's are always going to suggest you cut down on your drinking or quit all together. Personally I haven't slowed my roll at all and aside from having diabetes I'm pretty healthy and I know I'm not the only one. I do feel better however, with a tad bit of excercize and eating healthy...have no choice now and even loosing weight. Don't worry you will figure out what feels good and what will work for you.

    Pretty music Jazzy.

No more wake ups until vaca.....this is it...I work 5ayem to 9ayem and then back at 12pem to 330pem....then done until Jan 1. Donese finished yesterday but is still picking up hours at her second job today. She asked me last night if she could poop in here at the lounge and told her absolutely she could...she thought maybe she wouldn't be welcome because she never had the rat bastard..but most of ya'll know that she lost a partner to it and was a diligent care giver and that we both met in BCO during that time....so figured she is an honorary member already. So if you see a BOOMER that's who it is.

Have a blessed day everyone....stay out of trouble....Ya right

    xoxo

Good Morning, Loungettes! Happy Thirsty Thursday! Happy first day of Winter! Sunrise not for another hour. Sunset just before 4 peeyem. Looks Like more snow coming over the weekend, and possibly on Christmas Day. Definitely going to be a white Christmas here!Sadie isn't too fond of the cold, but she does get her run around in the snow time every day. Gotta supervise the neighborhood, and protect me from the evil gray squirrel!

CynCyn--Hooray for vacay! Yikes, 2 hours early for work, that's a bummer. Not to mention makes for a long day. Do you do a kind of work that can start earlier and end earlier? Great you have office space at Donese's.

Chi--too bad the broadcasts are recorded. So glad it will be next year.

    Jazzy--Beautiful music!

Karen--such a pretty braid, I don't blame her for not wanting to take it out!

Bella--Welcome!The problem with drinking and bc is that the connection can't be proven as causative. Your Onc has probably given you the talk about a low fat, low meat, high veggie based diet to help prevent recurrence. The American Cancer Society sponsored a very large study that showed that following that kind of diet did not change the chances of recurrence in breast cancer compared to a "typical" American, high fat, high meat diet. So the reality is that there is no real way to predict recurrence, and no real way to prevent recurrence beyond the treatments we have now. So it comes down to your personal experience-- if you cut back or cut out the alcohol for a couple of weeks do the side effects get better? If so, it may be worth limiting drinking until treatment is over, most of the time. I wouldn't let that keep me from having a few glasses of wine at a special event or dinner out with friends. If the side effects don't ease off, then the wine isn't the problem. We can't give up everything that makes life worth living, we have to continue living, especially during the long-term treatments. In the long term, if you cut out wine and get a recurrence 25 years from now will you feel you lost out on a lot of enjoyable times? If you keep drinking and get a recurrence in 25 years will you feel guilty? Which seems like the worse scenario? Let that be your guide.

CynCyn--Here in the Lounge Donese is absolutely welcome! She has earned her membership. I'd love to "meet" her.
