I feel the same way. Daily wine in moderation. Before being diagnosed I drank half a bottle every day watching the sunset and during dinner. Now I drink one glass before dinner and SB alcohol free IPA beer during dinner. I must say alcohol free wine tastes like crap, but the beer is pretty good!!

    Salud!

From your friendly "neighborhood" beverage geek:

Based on how wine is made (which requires fermentation) and that de-alcoholizing wine requires heating analogous to pasteurization so that the alcohol evaporates, de-alcoholized wine will never taste as close to the original as either alcohol-free beer or decaf coffee. (Also why most kosher wines--except those made from grape harvest to bottling to even serving, by only observant Jewish males--taste so flat, since the "mevushal" heating process that makes it okay for anyone of any gender, degree of observance, or faith to serve it also blunts the varietals' character). In order to make what is now essentially sour grape juice taste more like wine, manufacturers add back unfermented grape juice--which adds sweetness but still does not restore the "edge" that makes wine taste like wine. It's good for cooking, however (except of course flambeeing, which requires alcohol, is impossible).

I'm not sure how non-alcoholic beer is made, but I suspect more hops and unfermented filtered barley "water" are added to produce a more beer-like "zing," a flavor profile most people associate with ales & lagers. But the barley-water addition is probably why non-alc. beer is often just as carby as any "light" beer.

Coffee beans are decaffeinated by soaking the "green" (un-roasted) beans in a food-safe solvent or carbonated water (CO2 or "Swiss water process"). The caffeine is precipitated out (and usually re-sold to drug and soft-drink companies); if a solvent is used, it is also extracted and discarded; and the flavor oils & esters that might also have been inadvertently extracted are re-introduced (by reducing the volume of water, then re-soaking and drying the beans before roasting). The roasting process--especially dark roast--burns off almost all the residual caffeine. (That's why dark-roasted regular coffee--even though it tastes "stronger"--actually has less caffeine than light or medium roast.

good morning Loungettes! Happy Monday monkey day! Back to work this morning got quite a list of things I need to do, hoping to have a good productive day today. I think I will Sadie made sure I got up after only snoozing the alarm clock once. How that dog can sleep under the covers and still have such an icicle nose to stick on the back of my neck absolutely amazes me.

Goldie—As long as the lavender flowers are blooming, they should be good to use. Lavenders are so pretty and so versatile, can be used in almost anything.

    Morning Teka

Genny—I am going to talk to the scheduler and see if there’s something that can be done with me working eight hour shifts to cut down on the agency staff overtime. It may take a little finagling, but I’ve got to learn the rules and how that all works. I think agency people have to be signed up for at least four hours at a time.

Illie—that is quite the scar. Somehow in my mind I was picturing something much smaller. I’m still praying that your swallowing and the voice come back to normal ASAP.

Chrissy—so glad to see you pooping! I’m glad to hear that you’re checking in regularly. Speak up more often!

    Chi—what is a frito pie????

Jazzy, same here as far as winter is concerned, hasn't been too bad, but I don't think we are supposed to get any snow. Going to be cold tho, tomorrow and Wednesday, then warming up again. You are staying off FB for a month? But glad you will still be hanging with us here.

NM, busy week this week too? Frito pie is basically chili and fritos, sort of a twist on nachos maybe. I've never had it, but I must say, it looks good.

Met the new people, very sweet. Younger than I expected, late 30's maybe. They have a 16 yo, but did not bring him as they thought they were going to an "adult" party! Which none of us are like that at all!

Good Monday morning ladies, my last day before facing reality once again. Very cool here, last night we were snuggled up in blankets to sit outside! Tomorrow and everyday after that it’s supposed to be in the 80s here, (sigh), no one can get the cold to follow them around like me. I’m better than an Indian rain dance too. If your area is having a drought, invite me to come for vacation... your weather problems will be solved. Molly said is hasn’t rained like it did 2 days ago in the years she been coming here! Last time I came to stay with her it was in February and we took a boat to Key West and all had to buy sweatshirts while we were there. When we BCO girls went on the cruise I stopped for a few days first to visit an old friend in Orlando and she showed up to pick me up in a winter coat, earmuffs and gloves! Ohio weather just follows me wherever I go! It is supposed to be sunny and 70 today tho so it’ll feel like paradise to me. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about Cami and Sandy, way too much gray in our part of the country. We don’t have any solid plans, maybe golf, might go listen to some music tonight, wanted to go to the pool but I think it’s gonna be too cold.

NM , hope you can figure out an 8 hour day, I think it should be optional at 60, most of us can’t retire now till 66 1/2 and our bodies aren’t meant to work 12 hour days anymore. Harvey snuggles under the covers with me too, my DH says he and Junior keep looking for me.

Maria, wish I could find a good alcohol free wine, I tried to drink it when I was getting chemo but it all taste like grape juice. I’ve tried to cut back to 1/ day but not able to do it. My DH and I split a bottle every day so that’s 2 a piece but I still have a hard time not opening a second. By the time I get done with this vacation my liver is going to crawl out of my body and slap me in the face!

Jazzy, I’ve never been to New Mexico, may have to put that on my list, the picks I’ve seen look beautiful, I think I’d like to try it in the fall. I don’t even know who won the Super Bowl, I fell asleep, I’ll have to google it when I’m done here.

Sandy, so one groundhog says more winter but not the other...hmmm I’m going to have to go with the official one. I really would prefer it stay just below freezing so I don’t have to deal with the muddy paws. These 38 degree days are messy! I don’t mind the cold I’d just like more sunshine, we can go weeks without ever seeing it in Ohio.

Lori, I figured that was the reason for the name baby girl, after looking at her zipper I could tell she was young.

Ill, don’t mean to talk about you behind your back, hope you’re feeling better today. I feel so bad for you young girls with this rat bastard, at least I was in my 50s and now 60s with the mets, fu**ing disease.

So I’m going to get my second cup of coffee and read for awhile. When I was dx the first time a neighbor gave me a book by Regina Brett called God never blinks and I read about a 3rd of it and forgot about. So I brought it with me and I’m enjoying it. I’m not a very religious person but it brings me some calm. Similar to the chicken soup books. I may be back later, have a good Monday

    Mornin' ladies,

I'm back, let's see how this goes.

Boy this place has been hoppin' the last 2 days, I'm glad to see everyone. I enjoy everyone so much, but now I can't remember much. EXCEPT Illi's pic. Something hard to forget. Oh Illi I hope ur feeling better and u can swallow better.

I think I see someone new, Maria Welcome hope u come back and share this truly is a great bunch. I've met such great people here and some have gone on trips together and I've met a couple, it's just plain good.

Jazzy I don't remember which thread I met u and Teka on, cuz I've been around a while, but I lurkedhere for a while and when I came in I stayed. And when u gals came it was even better. U should put some of ur sunset pics on here.,they are beautiful.

Sandy I think Lori explained the time thing to u...she always explains everything better than I can. Lori I tried the Z thing but it didn't work but I do have an old computer so maybe that's why, IDK And Sandy I always thought the stronger the coffee the more caffeine if had, never read the ingredients stuff. BTW ju an I are probably the only 2 that live so close to each other. I'm further than Villa Park but y only 10 to 15 mins.A lot of people take walks around here and if there were sidewalks so would I, but cuz of my falling so much no one want s to go with me and I admit I'm to afraid to go by myself. There's a lot of land here tho so backyards are like the ones from years ago pretty big.I wish we could have a pool tho, I love it cuzz I can actually walk with no help, what freedom.

Lori I don't blame u for the ride here, it's a long one and last time u were alone and I don't like that part at all.But I am able to go out and we can go to restaurants, we do have a lot around here, Sandy knows too.

Celia since u've retired u've been doing so much wow good for you.

Kim it's good to see u start off the day here, I got way to used to it that's why worry comes in. And I can't keep up with all the comings and goings here which sound like fun. Give Sadie an extra belly rub from me.

My kids went out for the Super bowl and had a good time, Joey stayed home with me, he's not into football and the night before they went to another party so they were busy this weekend and Leslie pushed herself for Marty but glad she went.Hey

Hey Teka and Chrissy, always great to see you.

Oh my phone has started an I haven't set up for work yet, but I di take care of who called just in a raggitag way.

    LUBS U ALL

NM- good to see you here. Frito pie is a lot like nachoes, but with fritos on the bottom, instead of tortilla chips. It's a party fav for sure. I think the Chiefs won and always like it when the one who has not been in any bigger competition to win like that, so good for them. Kansas City will be partying today for sure, and lots of people will go to work hung over I expect, lol.

Genny- NM is lovely in the fall. Sept is my fav month here, warm days and cooler nights. October is the big balloon fiesta so if you ever come then, make your travels plans way early as hotels sell out early (almost a year in advance). Enjoy the rest of your time.

ChrissyB- hi girlfriend. How is everything down under? Are you being impacted by the fires? I hope not....

Cami- I think we all met initially on the Hermits thread, but think some of us were over on Insomniacs for awhile too. Those threads sort of ran their course, and I dropped off those and a few others early on. I think several of us migrated to the Drinking Thread from there too. I can't totally remember either, it was a pretty confusing time back then....

illimae, I, like NM, pictured that surgery much smaller. I think they have good stuff out there that will help it fade. It really stinks that you go through all that and now have the swallowing trouble. I hope that there is no damage done, and starving isn't a great way to lose weight. You are in my thoughts and prayers daily. You need to get well soon, I am missing all the trips and pictures of drinks and food that you share.

genny - You are the one that brought this cold weather to Florida!! You must be further south that me, because it is cold here today. So sorry to read about the mets. It feels like cancer is always following and ready to pounce at any time. Enjoy your time here Fl. So cool meeting a new friend on the plane.

Jazzy - I am glad you got time off, you seemed like you got so much done, I know that always makes my load feel lighter when stuff gets accomplished. You can go back to work without anything hanging over you needing to get done.

NM - you sure did have a time with the garage door and the electric. I hate it when something goes and it and you run into more problems trying to get it fixed. Hope you can get your work hours straightened out. 12 hours is a rough day as you get older.

JC- You always seem to have a lot going on and I feel the same way about this site. It is a mental savior. So many great people here.

Goldie - it was funny about your husband and the cooler thing. We humans are such strange creatures. Lol The frito pie picture looked yummy. It sounds like something my grandchildren would love.

ChiSandy- I am with Cami on the coffee thing, I thought the darker coffee had more caffeine .It amazes me sometimes, I really thought by the time I got this old I would know everything, and I am finding out how much I don't know.It does prove the old adage "your never too old to learn".

I know I miss a lot in replying.I always think of things after I post.

    Have a great week!

My interview went SO WELL today. I think I am going to get an offer, consulting to start with an option to move to FT in time for something juicer. I hope to hear more this week and expect I may be back in the saddle again in a few weeks.

Misty- I am creating a new structure for myself to keep up better at home. I find sometimes that although I keep up with a lot of the routine cleaning and maintenance stuff, I just need something better to be sure I have it recorded when I need to do things like change some of the filters, etc. Now I can go back and look to see when I did something and if I am do or overdue. I am taking some of my work approaches and applying them to my personal life and hope it will help me to stay more organized. A lot of things got away from me last year, but it was also "one of those years....."

OK that's certainly isn't me, but I think I like this hair style for me. Its basically for thinner hair <which I now have> for much straighter hair <again have it> and easy to just throw fingers in it <which I also have> so I would like ur input on this. Please remember I can not do anything with my hair anymore, it won't hold a curl no matter what I put on it and one side has less hair than the other so it's even worse looking. I know there are lots of problems here and this is stupid nothing, but I can't sleep and I would like ur opinion about this stupid subject I apologize for sounding so trivial, but if I think about all that really happens I just get to sad. My GF told me today 2 bad news things and I just on't want to think about them now. So I bring u gals into my web of insanity, Welcome.

Cami, that 'do looks like just the ticket. If I ever get tired of maintaining (and Bob stops preferring) long hair, my hair gets thinner, and I give in to the gray, I might give it a try (though I'll try on a wig first).

I actually out-drank Bob at the party last night. (He did get a head start on me at brunch, though--I stayed home and drank coffee). I had one glass each of grüner veltliner (Austrian white), La Vielle Ferme grenache (French red), and crémant de Limoux (French bubbly); he had two glasses of the red. Nice spread, fun, game was closer than the score looked. Although there was a TD call that was a definite "WTF" moment: please explain to me how someone who runs out of bounds with no part of neither him nor the ball hitting the ground of the end zone can be a touchdown rather than "first & short yardage." The refs saw the carrier wave the ball--still in the air--over the goal line--but neither he nor it ever touched the ground until he fell out of bounds entirely on the sideline. It's like saying that if you shoot a basketball from outside the key, and merely by virtue of it passing through the air across the rim, it's a 3-pointer. Which is to say, NOT. But hey, it wouldn't be a Super Bowl without one really stupid call by the refs. (And there was a second KC TD so it's kinda moot anyway).

The Frito pie was a layer of Fritos, then chili, then more Fritos & cheese. One year Tom (the chef) made it in individual single-serve bags of Fritos. I got pretty creative at skirting the carbs. I briskly walked off the calories.

No wine tonight. Home alone till just now--and if I drink so close to bedtime I'm asking for my esophagus to feel like Mt. Vesuvius.

Seeing my primary tomorrow for bloodwork--gonna ask about a carotid Doppler, DEXAScan and possible abdominal ultrasound to see why I can palpate the lumpy outline of my guts on my belly when standing. (Too firm to be cellulite--but we won't talk about what lies beneath the saggy skin of my thighs, butt & flappy bat-wings). Seriously considering doing SonoBello or CoolSculpting--will still have all that excess skin but it'd be easier to smush beneath stretch underwear & knits. (No, Medicare wouldn't cover it, but it would cover a tummy tuck & panniculectomy to cure intertrigo--skin fold yeast infections. Sorry if I've ruined your appetite for a midnight snack).

Cami, Lori, I see where that "6 hrs" comes in: it's the distance between Genny/Mary in Cleveland (from where you'd be driving) and Cami & me in Chicagoland. Cami--I'm only about an hour away from you (and singing in Downers Grove Fri. night--about 15-20 min. from you).

cami, cute haircut, definitely a fingerdo, you'll next some product for oomf, Molly has thin shitty hair and she always wondered why when I styled it with my fingers it looked so much better then when she tried to do the same thing. Then she called me one day all excited and said, “I figured it out! I wasn't using my thumbs!" It's looked good ever since, so my hairdresser tip to you, USE YOUR THUMBS!!!!

Well my flight has been delayed 1 hour so no need to rush this morning, I'm missing my DH and dogs, I'm feeling kinda sad and scared and ready to get on with “the plan". I'll poop in later, bye for now

Mary, funny about taking cold weather or rain with you! Molly looks nice and warm. And gray days, coming from Michigan, I know all about that. But now after being in AZ for 20 years, just one gray day is horrible, and if you get 2 in a row, why the world is going to end! Plus, I don't make any power! Quite the colorful poodle! And don't hesitate to call if you need to talk.

Cami, well shoot on the ctrl and Z. Next time try it a couple of times. And keep holding the ctrl key and then the Z key, so you end up holding both at the same time, make sense? You do have a large yard and it's very pretty. I love the cut, reminds me a little of my blonde wig I had. Sorry that your GF had some bad things to tell you, feel free to share or if you do want to talk about it. And driving to you by myseld is not an issue for me. You know all the driving I do just to get to my doctors and I like to drive.

Jazzy, fall is my favorite too. No snow here but the wind yesterday was crazy. We had gusts up to 70 mph. We live in a very pretty part of the country. So many beautiful places to visit, AZ and UT for sure, I have not been to too many places in NM, so can't really elaborate on that and of course the balloon festival is amazing! Congrats on the great interview and pretty sure this will be your next "gig" as you call it.

Misty, it WAS funny about the cooler, but like I said, didn't feel one bit sorry for him. He said the other, next we go somewhere I'm taking this on with wheels. I say to him, that's why I asked why you didn't take it before. He says he didn't know it had a handle that raised (like on a suitcase). Well, what they heck good are wheels if you don't have a handle to pull it!

Sandy, good luck with your appts. today.

Ok, here is a map for me, Mary and Cami.
I can meet Mary in Toledo, would take me about an hour and a half to get there.
Meet Mary in Toledo, then drive to Cami...about a 6 hour drive. We would need to get an early start.
If I drive right to Cami, it's about 5 hours
So, I'll wait and see how Mary is doing and we will discuss. Cami, can you ask Les or Marty if they remember the hotel I stayed at?

Hi friends- well it's a wintry day here in New Mexico. I was up early to take my friend to her eye surgery. She did fine, but had general anesthesia vs. the sedation like I had, so I stayed with her for awhile after I go her home. It was snowing pretty heavily by the time I got to her place a bit before 6 a.m. and, crazy snowing from the time she was in the surgery center.

I went to hang out at the nearby Starbucks during her procedure, better than waiting in the cramped and busy waiting room in that hospital anyways. No winter flus or viruses for me thank you. Then I got her home and stayed for awhile until she was ready to sleep. Myself and another person on her side of the city will be reaching out today to check in on her, as well as the next few days.

Back home and my other car is now ready for pick up after it's repair, so I am waiting to hear about the shuttle and if I can get them to pick me up in another hour to go get her. Snow is supposed to stop by then, so they say. And Goldie, we had those winds too, the "big winds" usually start up in February and think yesterday was only the beginning of those spring winds we all know too well out here in the wild west.

I found out last night I am getting a second interview and waiting to hear more on that. Fingers crossed!

And wow, lots of distance and driving between some of you gals working to connect around Goldie's visit but I hope it can happen and you can all have some laughs together.

Well bummer, the whole new job opp thing fell apart today because of some some policy change about where they can hire consultants from (major urban areas vs. approved firms). That is a new one, but not something I will put any more energy in to. Doing some wrap up e-mails and onward we go!

    Mornin ladies,

Oh Lori, u r getting me all excited about seeing u again, I'll find out nything u want to know but I do know the motel was within 5 mins. from here and Joey will be exploding with excitement. Now when will it be, but I want u to know if u change ur mind I will understand . so don't ever think this is written in stone, it's entirely how u feel and I know that. and Joey does too nowadays.

Jazzy I'm so sorry about this job, but believe me when I say they are the losers and I know something better will come along. Ur just to sharp to not hire. It's so nice how u take care of ur friend, but I wouldn't expect anything else from you. It's funny when u tell us it's snowing I never use to think of NM with any kind of snow, just like AZ, u guys always surprise me with some of the weather u have. And Lori with 70 miles wind is worse than Chicago.

Lily are u new??? It was nice that you pooped in to give me some feedback, actually very nice. I hope u come back and share ur story.

    Again no Kim., WTF

Illi how's today going for u, I hope better. And a few of u have Dr. stuff going on this week, hoping all goes well. Some of u gals are going thru a harder time now, please know we're here and there are always more prayers for u gals which can be very powerful and very positive thoughts for u. Look at Lori she's been amazing, she's truly someone to admire. It's been much easier on my sister an me from day 1 we knew and they seem to have things under control all these years. I just like to complain a lot.

Sandy believe me if it was easy for me or if I even drove, I certainly would make an effort to see u perform in DG. Friday night. But things are different for me now and I'm sure u'll be at ur best. YAY for u having o have some drinking in ujr evening. It's about time. And if Lori comes u' better make some time and we can figure out where to meet that's convenient.

My niece came over yesterday for my shower, now she was a beautician, just like Leslie was,,,so I told them between the 2 of them they can figure out the hair style. Les still cuts our hair and a few neighbors and Deb does her family but Les know how to razor cut, so between the 2 of them I think they can ,manage it.

Lori my GF told me a friend of ours died, we both liked him a lot and then she tells me her son passed out at work, found out he has sleep apnea, he's in his mid 30's. To us way to young and she's cracking up. She always tends to call me to settle her down---for some reason she thinks I help her so I did the best I could. Let;'s face it when anything is wrong with ur own son <or dgtr> it's very hard to hold it together. Her mom lives with her now with dementia so she has her hands full. And she is an extreme worrier, of course I worry but not like her.

Oh chit my print is getting smaller this stupid computer. or me.

Jazzy, I'm really sorry about the new job op, you seemed so happy to possibly be getting it....bummer. Best way to look at it things happen for a reason.

    See the source image

Cami, I'm really gonna try and make it out there, cuz in September, my DD will be there and maybe my son, so I want to spend as much time as I can with them. Yes, that hotel just down the road. I want the name to make reservations. My travels are March 4-12. I think the hotel I stayed at before was the Hampton Inn. Sorry for the bad news your BFF shared with you. And thank for the very sweet things you said about me. I think you are admirable as well.

Mary, do you think you would be interested? I could meet you in Toledo, but one of us would have to leave our car there over night. Not sure if you will be done with work or not by then, but if not, I forgot which days you work. If you would like to go.

I think NM has another busy week this week.

    BabyGirl, how are you doing?

Cold here again today, was below the donut hole (as NM calls it) this morning. But come Saturday, 65....woo hoo!

    Jack Frost Winter Cocktail

    See the source image

    1 tbsp light corn syrup
    1/3 cup shredded coconut
    3 cup ice
    1 cup pineapple
    1/2 cup vodka
    1/2 cup blue curacao
    1/2 cup cream of coconut

    1. On a small plate, add shredded coconut. Wet the rim of a glass with simple syrup (can also use simple syrup, but it won't hold the coconut as well) and gently dab the top the glass in the shredded coconut, coating the rim. See above video for example. Set glass aside.
    2. Add ice, pineapple juice, vodka, blue curacao, and cream of coconut to a food processor. Pulse until smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
    3. Pour Jack Frost Winter Cocktail into prepared glasses.
    4. Serve immediately.

Hi ladies- thanks for your kind words about this work opp not coming to fruition. Having done lots of business development for work with my consulting business these past 13 years, I know there is no guarantee things will work out, even if on the surface everything looks positive. And I also know that when something does not work out too, it often means it is not the right thing for me (like Goldie and Cami say). Sometimes it is because we get spared from a situation that may not be the best for us, other times it is because something better yet to come. I have this mug and also a book of daily readings about "trusting the process of life". I did do some closure e-mails to my colleague who was working on this with me, and the hiring manager who I talked to Monday, and thanked them both for their time to discuss the possibility of us working together.

Yesterday was such a long day for me, so I am taking today to regroup and will get back on track tomorrow with some worky things. The storm that came through

Cami- I am sorry to hear about the hard news. Losses and health problems galore in every direction sister. Sending much love.

I like hearing Joey is part of Goldie's fan club too. I think you goils have a plan in the works to meet up in March. I hope there will be some adult beverages involved.

Chi- I have been thinking about letting my hair go grey this year. I found this really cute silver/grey wig at my fav thrift store a few weeks ago, where I donate things. It is a higher end thrift store, and the wig looked healthy. I want to give it a try this year to see if I am ready for grey. I went grey early (40) and was not ready then, but I turn 60 next month and think it may be time. The wig was $12 and if you can find something to try out a different look, I think it's a great idea.

Mistyeyes- how are things for you. How is the family? Work? Weather?

Genny- did you make it home? I know you have some apts coming up on next steps. We are in your pocket sister.

Ill- thinking of you and hoping that you are continuing to heal and doing a bit better every day sister. I look forward to hearing how you are doing when you are feeling up to it.....

NM- I went a lurking on FB even though I am not posting and not seeing you out there either. My guess is there is something going on for you and hope you are doing okay. We are here if you need to talk.....

Goldie- we had that really high wind on Monday, followed by snow yesterday and just COLD today. Winter came back, but it's going to warm up again this weekend and then winter comes back again next week.

CeliaC- hope you are enjoying retirement still!

    Wishing everyone a good evening
