The happiness of one's own heart alone
    cannot satisfy the soul;
    one must try to include,
as necessary to one's own happiness,
    the happiness of others.

Very easy on the eyes- was very relaxed and relateable. 20 years ago when I saw him about a possible splenectomy I thought he looked like Tony Perkins. But not now. However, easy though he might be, I’m not looking forward to seeing him in 2 weeks.

Not sure why I’m going to Bethke for 2nd opinion, except maybe to please my son who beieves a surgeon who only does breasts is better than a general surgeon Winchester said in the last 10 years of his life his father only did breasts, and that he now primarily does them.

I don’t think the spectrum will present a difficulty for me with Merkel, but then I haven’t met him yet.

Still, a support group at Kellogg would be good

Basically, there's no offficial specialty board for breast cancer surgeons, so they all call themselves general surgeons. The oncoplastic breast surgeons get board-certified as plastic surgeons. From what I understand, Winchester does more breast cancer surgery than anything else, and has for at least the past 5 years.

Two things—when you are wheeled back from Recovery to your post-op roomette and they ask you if you'd like a little nosh, ask for the mini-bagel & schmear, which sure beats cookies or crackers. Second, the valet at Evanston is only a bit more than self-park, and the garage is a hike to the breast center and ambulatory surgery unit; and at Kellogg there's no additional charge to valet-park (comes in handy if you can't find a space and don't have an HC placard). Oh, and the free coffee in the parking-pay-station alcove in the Kellogg lobby is really weak, no matter if you push the “Bold" button. I usually bring a travel mug with a home-brewed shot of espresso pre-loaded; you can add a little instant (Starbucks Via is actually decent) instead.

    ChiSandy,

You are such a treasure with all your info and advice. I used to, years ago, go to Kellogg to a hematologist, Lynne Kaminer, for itp- low platelets, but I had forgotten about the valet and the parking. So thank you. With twilight sleep will they still offer me a mini-bagel,will I go to Recovery? It amazes me all I don’t know about this, but then would rather not( like probably all of us) wanted to know

I had general anesthesia—but because I also had sentinel nodes removed. You will get to skip the tracer injection into your nipple; at Evanston they do radioactive seed rather than wire location—and the seed placement is quick and practically painless (local shot of lidocaine, ultrasound-guided). You’ll still go to Recovery but with propofol you probably won’t remember anything before you find yourself back in the roomette. And without gas anesthesia you’re even more likely to be offered food & drink after.

    1. Thank you again, ChiSandy for the info. I did not know it would be proprofol. Do not think that was what I had for cataracts this year, nor was it versed. Winchester said something about if a wire was needed he would do it himself, but I didn’t really understand what he meant. Before I went into private practice I worked as an outpatient counselor in a chemical dependency unit which followed a 12 step program- a day at a time, do not project. I am failing being able to do this- am days ahead of myself, extremely anxious about the pathology report. Must get my anxiety under control.Poor husband is being a doll; I am being a drag.

Happiness is a sunbeam which may pass through a thousand bosoms without losing a particle of its original ray; nay, when it strikes a kindred heart, like the converged light upon a mirror, it reflects itself with redoubled brightness. It is not perfected till it is shared. -Jane Porter

A single act of kindness may have a long trajectory and touch those we will never meet or see. Something that we casually offer may move through a web of connection far beyond ourselves to have effects that we may have never imagined. And so each of us may have left far more behind us than we may ever know.

There is a sacredness in tears.
They are not the mark of weakness,
    but of power.
    They speak more eloquently
    than ten thousand tongues.
    They are messengers of
    overwhelming grief ...
    and unspeakable love.

People have had to make up for their spiritual impoverishment by accumulating material things. When spiritual blessings come, material blessings seem unimportant. As long as we desire material things this is all we receive, and we remain spiritually impoverished.

Power isn't control at all--power is strength, and giving that strength to others. A leader isn't someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his or her strength to others that they may have the strength to stand on their own.

It's difficult to develop a strong sense of self, to have a very secure self-image when the parameters offered by a value system are lacking. Our values define who we are. They offer us direction when making choices. They quietly demand that we behave responsibly. Living in concert with our values brings peace to our souls.

Worrying is carrying tomorrow's load with today's strength--carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn't empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.

What we are talking about is learning to live in the present moment,
in the now. When you aren't distracted by your own negative thinking,
when you don't allow yourself to get lost in moments that are gone or
yet to come, you are left with this moment. This moment--now--truly is
the only moment you have. It is beautiful and special. Life is simply a
series of such moments to be experienced one right after another. If
you attend to the moment you are in and stay connected to your soul and
remain happy, you will find that your heart is filled with positive feelings.

No one can give a definition of the soul. But we know what it feels like. The soul is the sense of something higher than ourselves, something that stirs in us thoughts, hopes, and aspirations which go out to the world of goodness, truth and beauty. The soul is a burning desire to breathe in this world of light and never to lose it--to remain children of light.

The genuine scientist is not moved by praise or blame, nor does he preach. He unveils the universe and people come eagerly, without being pushed, to behold a new revelation: the order, the harmony, the magnificence of creation! And as man becomes conscious of the stupendous laws that govern the universe in perfect harmony, he begins to realize how small he is. He sees the pettiness of human existence, with its ambitions and intrigues, its "I am better than thou" creed. This is the beginning of cosmic religion within him; fellowship and human service become his moral code. And without such moral foundations, we are hopelessly doomed.

May every soul that touches mine—be it the slightest contact—get from there some good; some little grace; one kindly thought; one aspiration yet unfelt; one bit of courage for the darkening sky; one gleam of faith to brave the thickening ills of life; one glimpse of brighter skies beyond the gathering mists—to make this life worthwhile. -George Eliot

We may think that happiness is a result of happy circumstances. A more mature view of happiness is that it is a by-product of sharing our good and serving others. It is a sense of doing a job well, honest communication with another, visiting someone who may be ill, or sharing a sense of humor. Happiness is a spiritual principle that we can lay hold of and use, regardless of outer conditions or circumstances.
It isn't necessary to wait for circumstances to bring happiness. When we try to give it to others, it returns to us multiplied. We can make our own joy, and let it act upon circumstances! One of the great paradoxes of truth is that a happy heart draws to itself what it needs for happiness.

What keeps faith cheerful is the extreme persistence of gentleness and humor. Gentleness is everywhere in daily life, a sign that faith rules through ordinary things: through cooking and small talk, through storytelling, making love, fishing, tending animals and sweet corn and flowers, through sports, music, and books, raising kids—all the places where the gravy soaks in and grace shines through. Even in a time of elephantine vanity and greed, one never has to look far to see the campfires of gentle people. Lacking any other purpose in life, it would be good enough to live for their sake. -Garrison Keillor

Simply give others a bit of yourself; a thoughtful act, a helpful
idea, a word of appreciation, a lift over a rough spot, a sense
of understanding, a timely suggestion. You take something
out of your mind, garnished in kindness out of your heart,
and put it into the other person's mind and heart.

    Let us be kind;
The way is long and lonely,
And human hearts are asking for this blessing only --
    That we be kind.
We cannot know the grief that men may borrow,
We cannot see the souls storm-swept by sorrow,
But love can shine upon the way to-day, to-morrow --
    Let us be kind.
