Is anyone coming from the city or nearby to attend the wake? I'm really going to try and make it. Anyone need a ride?
0 -
Jan, that is wonderful.
Now I was thinking of sending flowers from us and will do that but the blanket is ever so much more meaningful. May I send a donation for the blanket to you?

Thank you for posting, Orange. I tend to agree with you- I really don't think there is any plot out there to keep cures from us.
I'm hoping to go to the wake on Thursday with Joan and Laura- still working on changing my hours.

Jan I think that is such a great idea. You are thoughtful and kind. I do hope several people do get to go.
I use to think there were cures that perhaps were being withheld but with cancer.....I hate to say this, my feeling is that some simple thing is being missed --- that the burden to find the answer is so strong, that some crazy viral mathematical thing is sitting around waiting for the aha moment and people are just missing this one small item in the big picture. Easy for me to say --- but I really do believe it is sitting there is someone's calculations.
The snow is still pretty though I did a little slip and slide and couldn't make a turn so had to go around the block. That was this a.m. The streets were not bad when I came home. More snow coming.
See you all later.
Hugs, Jackie

Ritajean....Hi I just finished Taxol x 12 on January 24..... just now waiting to see my doc on Feb 14th to discuss Tamoxefin and then get the port out on the 24th. I am hoping the fatigue goes away soon! Have a trip to Florida March 19th. Also hoping hair grows quicker LOL
I was diagnosed July 14th 2010 1.5cm er+/pr+ brac neg HER2 neg....IIa IDC 1/12 nodes
We come to Bloomington all the time, my son plays travel ball we go to Xtra Innings for practice and we play a ton of Bloomington Teams..... My old OBGYN has his office there Dr. Gratkins... Good to here from a Local.... let me know who you think lives in Mahomet, I had a response from a very cool lady in Mansfield and I see a response from someone in Mahomet too....

mahometmom.........The gal from Mahomet is Annette. She goes by NanaA on the thread. I sent her a PM and she said she sent a message to you. She's a sweetie! I've had the opportunity to meet her because she came into Bloomington to one of our Bosom Buddies dinners.
Jan, that is such a wonderful and thoughtful thing to do about the prayer blanket. Her sister would probably treasure it!
Jackie...when are they predicting the next snow to come through?
Talk to you all later.

Your boys are adorable, Mahomet as are you.
Cleaned all day. We usually do something fun on Saturday night, but I need to kick back!
I really have no idea what is going on with a cure and cancer in general, but it seems that so many people are being diagnosed with BC. Is it just because we are catching it sooner so all these new people would have carried cancer for many many years. Or is it what we are eating and breathing. Is it because I am on this thread so I just know more people with breast cancer? For example, in the last month two people I know have been diagnosed.....my sister in law and my friend's mother. Doesn't that seem like a lot? I know my daughters are very conscientious about food, cleaning supplies and milk products that could have hormones. I am glad they are because I am of the 1950s and 60s and love for convenience foods. I think my darling mother packed a bologna sandwich on Butternut bread, chips and a Twinkie or a Snowball (remember them, anyone---shelf life of 20 years) nearly every day for 8 years of school. Oh, and I had a carton of chocolate milk. Think about that terrible diet! I think I will have a salad tonight!
Have a good evening!

Jan - I would be happy to "pitch in" for the cost of the blanket. Please let me know.

Thanks for all the positive feedback about the blanket, I really wanted to be sure you all were happy with the idea, it really is lovely and comes with a packet filled with beautiful quotes and prayers, sort of like Jackie would do for us. I read through the packet today and found a prayer about peace and hope and trust and thought it was very appropriate, I went through the Illinois Address list and through the boards posts to make sure I didnt miss anyone, it will be nice for Dy to know how many women cared for her sister. I had the blanket made at a local church and gave them a nice donation for it, if anyone really feels like the want to give something I can pass it on to the church but I would be just as happy if you donated to anything the family is suggesting.

Morning all....just sitting here, watching the beautiful fluffy flakes fall.....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! No more snow!!!!!!! Arghhhhhhhh..........spent a good part of yesterday, widening the driveway. And then came in to read on FB how DH's niece was sitting by her pool....and complaining that FL was going to be getting some rain and would ruin her weekend. Yeah....right. Who here would welcome that little weather problem!
Jan....thank you so much for the blanket. If/when someone hears re: Carolyn's choice of charities, please post it. I am just guessing but in lieu of flowers perhaps she would have liked a donation to a bc group, or the ACS. But this is just a guess on my part.
Welcome to the new girls.....we are a very supportive group.....just going thru a sad time right now but we will perk up. We can be very amusing and will def. make you laugh!
Orange...thank you for your comments. And Jacks....I agree with you....I really don't believe there is a big plot to keep a cancer cure hidden. And I too believe as my onc does, that we are all born with cancer cells...it is something that happens that turns them on. We are looking for that switch but it will be different switches for each cancer, and most probably each person. What we know is extra weight, lack of exercise, poor diet and smoking/alcohol can contribute to these "switches" but then again, not for everybody! It may turn out to be like Lauren says....eating a kiwi every day keeps the switch turned off!
DH is up and eating his cereal and then will be going out to shovel before going to the gym. God bless him! The snow is really coming down now. The weather guy said we won't be more than an inch out here....uh.....we have over 2" right now and its really snowing badly. I'm thinking 4" by the time its over......yuck.
Have a great Sunday all......hope you enjoy the superbowl, but I am hoping for some good movies myself. DH is going to be really upset....this year I bought NO snacks! Only thing I will plop in front of him are celery/carrot sticks and slices of lean cuisine frenchbread pizza! Sorry Sweetie....if Wendy is on her new diet, so are you! Misery loves company........

I have posted this quote before so hope no one minds. I get quotes daily but they don't always appeal and when I go looking.......I often run into some of my big all time favorites such as this one:
Live with intention.
Walk to the edge.
Listen hard.
Practice wellness.
Play with abandon.
Laugh.
Choose with no regret.
Appreciate your friends.
Continue to learn.
Do what you love.
Live as if this is all there is.

Morning. Yep, they say more snow today when the temps. change.....and after that some more on Wednesday -- would that be morning or afternoon. I give up -- we will have snow sometime for some reason. I could be ok with the snow, but I am not so ok with some of the arctic temps. that come along with it.
Thought about what Susan said. Didn't a lot of us eat somewhat badly for several years -- when we started getting convenience foods on the store shelves. It just seemed so easy to pluck those wondrous items from the store and have so much less work connected. After I " woke " part way up and started reading labels and boxes ( it has become a bit easier now ) I wondered how I could have eaten some of the stuff. I think some things are probably best avoided, but like Wendy says......we all have those cells that could be stimulated -- maybe. Goes back to the moderation. I would probably get something quicker by worrying about it --- so in the meantime I am going to be moderate in habits and just live.Hope you all have a great Superbowl Sunday. Have to be honest.....I'd only be in it for the commercials. See you later.
Hugs, Jackie

Morning Girls....Waving to you from the lake. It is soooooo beautiful up here. Lots of snow, piles of snow that is!!. It is winter fest with ice carving this weekend. It is amazing what they can do out of snow and ice. I don't know how to post pics from my iPhone to show you all but they are amazing sculptors. It is a great weekend for snowmobiling up here on the lake. Wheeeeeee
Jan....thank you for obtaining the wonderful prayer blanket for Dy. I know she will like it as it will be a remembrance of her sister and bring her comfort that Carolyn was well loved by all here. I too plan on going to the wake after school if the weather is not to bad.

We talked on the phone yesterday and are meeting for coffee tomorrow!

wendy - Your dh's snacks are a heck of a lot better than my dh's. Poor guy: broiled salmon, broasted brussel sprouts and sweet potatoe fries!
bj - Yes...I will put something together (sorry I didn't get back to you). Enjoy the white stuff!

I am hitting the forest preserve trails and going x-country skiing.

Hi ladies -
Thank you Jan for the prayer blanket for Carolyn. It sounds beautiful and I am sure Dy will cherish it. I am going out of town as well and cannot attend the services.
I believe in the "switch" too. I always felt mine was my first mammogram. I felt my lump about a year after that and then it just exploded to a 10cm tumor! I always did self exams and there is no way that thing was growing in there for years and years. I think the smashing during the mammo activated those cells. I'm probably wrong but that has always been my gut feel.
Snow coming down was pretty this morning, but I am really ready for Spring. It is going to take a long time for this stuff to melt! DD and I were planning our summer trip to Disney last night so that helps with the winter blues!
I will watch the Super Bowl today as I want to see the Black Eyed Peas - and Glee when it's over!
Hugs to all!

BJ: It sounds glorious!. We will head up for antiques and bagels but not today. DH and I are going cross country skiing as well. We have the woods across Dundee woods. Then there is the game.
The "switching" thingy is interesting, Connie and all. About three years before I was diagnosed I had a bloody discharge. Nothing showed up on mammograms and the doctor suggested I was bumping into things causing internal bruising (I can see bumping once). Even my colleague at school remembers that time as I was pretty freaked out. Something may have been switching then. I think that at 62 I am more philosophical about it all (Why not me?) and I can honestly say I am not mad that I have cancer. It happens. I just feel so passionately about people who are younger than me, and some significantly younger. That breaks my heart.
Jackie, the quote for today has been sent to the two daughters. It really does something to me to read it.
Wendy, you are so right on the flower idea. Flowers are showy but fail to last, while a donation to an org. remains! I am glad you brought that up.
Susan

Zap omg I too had bloody discharge. That's what got me my diagnostic mammo. I looked up everything on the Internet and all I could see was papilloma or breast cancer. (former onc thought papilloma). When I felt the large hard area I knew it was no papilloma. I just didn't realize how big this sucker was.0

Hi everyone,
Jan thank you so much for getting the prayer blanket. We have a wonderful group of caring ladies here and I'm glad to be in your group, well, you know what I mean. Hugs to you all.

Regarding the "switch" theory - I just read a book called "The Emperor of All Meladies: A History of Cancer". I would summarize that according to the author, it is not one switch, but a series of switches that turns a normal cell into a cancerous cell. So exposure to carsiogenics, radiation, etc. over time flips all the switches and the cell becomes malignant.

I think several bosses turned on my switched over the past 4 years!

Lago - How right you are :-( I believe stress is a big contributor since your body's immune system is weakened at time of stress and does not do a good job kicking those at risks cells out. I am sure that my very demaning job and personal situation (over many years) contributed to a great extent.
0 -
I agree...........stress is a big contributor! There have been many studies done about stressful conditions up to 5 years prior to a diagnosis and there is a high correlation.
0 -
I'm with everyone on the 'trigger' theory.. I am convinced mine happened due to severe stess right before the diagnosis.. and probably food choices or even birth control pills.. but the trigger was stress!!
I did something really dumb!! I was walking over the ledge between our dining and living rooms and didn't clear it with my toes.. I could hear the 'crack'.. been icing it since it happened 3 hours ago.. throbbing and can't put my foot down! Perfect timing to fly to Seattle tomorrow.. UGH.. this will be fun! NOT!!!

makmak - OH NO! If it's your toe, foot or ankle I have an ortho boot that you can borrow (I also have an ortho shoe). I have broken several toes over the years. The only way I was able to walk without limping was to wear my ortho boot. It allows you to walk totally normal. If you want to borrow it, let me know.
------------------------------------------
I agree stress has something to do with it. But I also think it's excessive inflammation - which is tied to the immune system. An unhealthy diet, obesity, lack of exercise, etc., can increase inflammation. I think an unhealthy diet is the #1 trigger due to the pesticides, etc., in our food.
Skiid today. It was nice out. I was all bundled up and within a half an hour, I was sweating. lol
Hope you're all having a nice Sunday.

Thanks for the suggestion Laura. Dug up my 'shoe' in case I need it tomorrow.. seems likely.. still can't step on my foot.. but it hurts in the shoe too.. Good thing I have 4 hours to sit at the Seattle airport on the way home.. I may need it to make it to the gate!! LOL..

Makmak, arrange for wheelchair service. I have escorted so many groups of kids to DC and always someone has some problem and we arrange for wheelchair. You are, aftreall going for cancer treatment, so no one will blame you for abusing a service that is in place for situations such as your own. You may want to wear the boot anyway. Darn, so sorry this happened.
