2nd Time, I'm also a second timer.  It sucks, but somehow I think the experience made it easier.  I knew what to do and how to process it emotionally.  I also was much more educated and was able to make choices I didn't know existed the first time like cold capping to save my hair and immediate reconstruction.  I'm sorry you have to go through this again.

SEs been blowing me away last few days . . . Have called MO on call 2x already. Day 3 got fever/chills & called MO when fever went to 102 on Day 4. Doc thinks it was SE of Neulasta. Then last few days having so much trouble eating. Everything tastes foul. All I'm eating is noodles/pasta, white toast, apple sauce, and still cramping/D each night. I've lost 10 lbs in 1 week. Then today (day 7) a nosebleed that wouldn't stop. It is incredibly dry/cold here, I think that was exacerbating the dryness of my nose. Put pressure on my nose so that it stopped pouring out of the nostril, but horrendous post-nasal drip of blood & a couple of larger clots led to my 2nd call to MO (on Xmas day no less). She told me if it didn't stop needed to go to ER. Luckily it did stop about 30 min later.  Anyway, hoping that things are going to improve soon! At this rate, don't know how much working I'll be able to do. I have gone for walks every day, strangely not having a big problem with fatigue or soreness. Walking outside is actually the highlight of my day!

McKatherine, I'm actually just over the district line in md (silver spring). So other side of the universe from NOVA lol :)

oranje. So sorry to hear you are having such a rough time. I had the big D. Not fun. I actually ended up in diapers cause I got sick of laundry 3 times a day. Sigh. And my tastes buds were gone until right before my next Tx.  I ate the same stuff. Pretty much the white stuff. It didn't taste good. It just didn't taste as bad as other stuff. Try mashed potato and chicken gravy. A bit of citrus in water may help. I could drink iced tea watered down. Hugs. You will get through this. If you keep on with the D get different meds. I was on Diphen hydrate?atropine. It helped. Hugs.

orange, I am so sorry you are having such a rough time with the SE's. Hopefully your MO can figure out what to do next time so you don't have so hard for the rest of your tx's. I don't think there is really anything that can be done about the taste issues, everything just tastes bad for most of chemo :( But the fever/chills and terrible nosebleeds should be something they can address.

lovewins, yes I finally did go have my stylist cut my hair. She really only cleaned it up around the back and ears and gave it a shape. She really didn't touch the top part. It's finally growing a little faster now that I am off Herceptin.

oranje- the nosebleed is a function of low platelets combined with the soft tissue damage from chemo - try putting some Aquaphor (or Vaseline) on a q-tip and putting some in each nostril, then pinching the nose to distribute it around.  Keeping the inside of the nose more moist may help.  By the end of chemo I was using Aquaphor at the corners of my eyes, on my lips, on hands/feet, and because I too had 10 days of the Big D after each infusion, you can guess where else I put it!

thank you for the tips! I will try the aquaphor in the nose trick. Humidifier in the bedroom seems to help too. What would really help would be for the weather to change & become a little less dry. Is that too much to ask? :)

Last night I ate some cheese without incident. So progress!

orange - yay for progress!  Let me know if you need me to bring you some chicken soup!  ;)

My favorite add humidity to the house trick is a saucepan of water on the stove with cinnamon, cloves, rosemary and orange peels.   It smells so good!  And it's all stuff that's in thieves oil, so I keep telling myself that it's killing germs, too.  :). You just have to make sure it doesn't boil dry.

? for those of you on this chemo...

When was your hair gone?  I am using cold caps and I am trying to gage how well we did on chemo 1 with them.  I thought I'd know for sure by now (3 weeks exactly since last chemo), but it sounds like some folks go quite a while without full hair loss.

I obviously had some spots where the caps were not tight enough as there are places that are shedding very, VERY bad the past 2 days so I am not sure what I should expect at this point....

I started shedding very heavily on day 3 of my 2nd tx. Here's a pic of hair that I lost just that first day. I had it shaved the next day. That is an 8 1/2" by 11" paper it is sitting on.

Well most of the people in my Month started a bit before the 2nd tx. BTW, have you looked for the Dec. 2013 chemo group? If you find one everyone is at about the same level in SEs. It's very helpful to go through this together. I was on Feb 2012 . We are still in touch. This forum is helpful because we have been through this tx. So you are in the right place. But i would try to find the most recent chemo one too. Because no one knows more how you feel about taste changes and hair problems than those going through that right now! Good luck. There is also one for cold cap users which is helpful since you are on that route. Just search for those using the search bar. Good luck and see you later.

Thank you. I am on that board all the time but posted this question here in case timing of hair loss is specific to the drugs. Seems most folks there who started around same time as me have already lost their hair or chosen to shave it.   I thought my cold caps had worked very well but didn't know when I could be sure and in the past several days there are certain spots where the hair is really REALLY coming out ALOT now.   So I decided to check here for folks that had the same drugs as me....

OneTexasDay - My hair started falling out on day 17 after first treatment, then I buzzed it.  Couldn't stand the mess.

mine started shedding on day 13.   Most of it was gone within about 6 days after that.  I never shaved mine.   I just kept my "grandpa" hairs as padding for my hats.  :)

Mine started falling on day 16 & I had it cut to 3/4 inch to avoid stubble.

One Texas Day, day 17 is the average day for major hair loss after chemo.  Thats  when I lost my hair on ACT.  I also did cold caps on TCH and started shedding around this time just before my second treatment.  I still have a full head of hair 9 weeks PFC, although I do shed with hair washes and brushing. It's completely unnoticeable on my thick hair.

on hair loss - I am on Day 12 and my scalp hurts. I've been shedding a little, nothing major till now. The wig store will cut my hair & make a halo for me to use under hats, but they've been closed for the holidays. I'm going in Thursday when they reopen to have my hair cut & pick up my wig. I won't shave it (at least not yet). Hopefully I'll get to keep a really short pixie for at least a couple of days.

I am unusual in that I did not start to lose hair until day 24 - so three days after TCH #2.  My onc was amazed, but it was also indicative of also having to shave my legs throughout chemo, which was unfair!  My hair did finally start to shed in a major way by day 25, so I shaved it to 1/2" at that point, but I never went shiny bald - always had "dust bunny" hair as DH called it.

Special - made me laugh too.  That's exactly what I had the first time around & now again.  Not enough to keep me warm but not bald.

Yes, I had that too. I had this patchy salt and pepper stuff. Felt like it was actually uglier than being totally bald. BUT the payoff is that you have a head start (haha, bad pun there) on the regrowth. In my April 2009 chemo group, I had more hair faster than those who were on ACT and had smooth bald heads. They were looking for the first hair peeking through when I had a covering already. So hang in there, dust bunny heads!
