I had problems with nausea in the beginning. I took my pill with a glass of milk and that seemed to do the trick. Once my body adjusted to the medication, I don't have to do the milk thing any longer. Just a suggestion for those dealing with nausea. BTW! I do take mine in the morning with breakfast.

RunFree16 - I agree on the Ambien! I finally got it about 6 months ago and it changed my life. I was so sleep deprived. This allows me to fall asleep and STAY asleep. When my alarm goes off at 6:00 a.m. I wake up ready to go, not groggy at all. One thing I did learn tho ... an Ambien and 2 glasses of wine do not go together, if you want to remember having sex with your husband the next day! LOL!

re: Ambien - yes GirlPowerDebbie. I walked to the store around the corner once after 1.5 glasses of wine AND without wine..I made myself lunch for the next day a few times (all with no memory). I switched to Restoril, but did love knowing that I would definitely fall asleep with Ambien. Take it RIGHT as you lay down to sleep (not before). Good ZZZZZ-ing~!

You guys, just be careful with Ambien.... Maybe it works differently with all of us.... I remember reading on BC.ORG one time about all these women not remembering what they did the night before! Their HUSBANDS did, but they didn't have a clue! Sometimes they would walk around, and never remember it.... I'll try and find where I saw this....

Chevyboy, I've read that most of those episodes where people do things they don't remember are with Ambien CR, the controlled-release formulation. At least I hope that's true. I do find, as you say Purl, that it works fast. One guy said that his wife has to take it IN bed or she won't make it there! For me it works in 15-20 minutes. It has taken so much of the pessimism out of my sleep issues.

I'm so glad it is working for you! My DH has a hard time sleeping every night! He can fall asleep fast, but wakes up about every 2-3 hours, and just lays there! He just won't take anything stronger than 1 Tylenol PM.... And 1 Melatonin does not work for him.

I wish he would just TRY something else, but he won't.... Men seem to think differently than we do.... So I'm sleeping like a baby all night, and he can't! We really go to bed early though! And as you can TELL, I'm usually awake by 4:30....:)

it's been a long time since I have posted anything but I need your opinion. I have been on Tamoxifen for nearly 2 years and I have not had my period since I started Tamoxifen. Came home today from work today and started spotting. The cramping is unbelievable! Should I be concerned or is this normal on Tamoxifen? Thanks for any help you can give!

Cherethomas....I would think that was not normal, make an appt. with your OB/GYN...

Cherethomas, I agree. It may not be any big deal but it's worth at least calling. My friend had ovarian cysts on Tamoxifen, more alarming than anything else. It could be something like that.

    cherethomas, I agree too.

I see that you're estrogen positive. Tamoxifen is supposed to suppress estrogen production. If you are spotting your estrogen levels may have increased.

You should give your doctor a call.

    Cherethomas,

I had a polyp in my uterus which created spotting for me. You need to see your ob/gyn. He/She will probably do a biopsy of your uterus and also look at your uterus and ovaries by ultrasound. Take care.

Unfortunately, Tamoxifen does not suppress estrogen in the uterus. In fact, it acts as an antagonist which can create all kinds of problems. I know this as I speak from experience. I agree with the others, make an appt with your gyn.

oh boy I took a week off tamoxifen because I had breast reconstruction revision surgery & my surgeon wanted me off aspirin. I take baby aspirin with the tam to ward off clots. Anyway I slept wonderful the week before & the week of surgery ( pain meds). But I've been on a few days and I'm full awake. I try not taking sleep aids & the melatonin does nothing for me. I'm a mess. Uurggh

softness - You aren't a mess. Many of us have sleep issues with Tam. Melatonin doesn't do a darn thing for me either. I am up many times a night and have trouble just falling asleep. I don't take any sleep aids. I had to go off Tam for 5 weeks before I had my hysterectomy and what a difference. I slept great. Now, back to my sleepless nights.

Softness I know how you feel about being a mess.. I have been on Tamxiofen since Sept 27th and have yet to try any sleeping pills but i am awake quite a bit with hot flashes and have a hard time to sleep. I did find out that if I take my pill that if I go right to bed and can fall asleep I actually get some hours of sleep. The first two weeks for me seemed the worst.

I also feel a bit sleep deprived and hubby complains I am grumpy- I am !!

HI, I have a question for the group.

I have been taking Tamoxifen since Sept 27th and read that while on it I should not take Benedryl. This is a problem for me in the fact that I have a seafood allergy and once in awhile(not often) I end up having to take Benedryl because of me eating something I didnt know had seafood in it or what happend last summer was seafood was cooked in the same fryer as my fish and I ended up with a reaction.

I wonder if Benedryl loosing effectiveness or Tamoxifen does or do they react?

Someday I will get all the kinks worked out.

I went out and boutht myself a "CHILLO" which I saw advertisd on TV. Once I get rid of the strong plastic smell to it- it won't be too bad- its good for the middle of the night hot flashes, not great, but does help :)

ndrgrrl - My MO says no Benadryl but I would think if you are not having to take it very often it would not be a problem. Definitely ask your MO about this. It has been my experience that MOs have differing opinions about a lot of things and yours may say it is okay.

Benadryl detracts from the effectiveness of Tamoxifen, so shouldn't be taken on a regular basis (and be careful because that's the ingredient in a lot of the PM meds), but in an emergency severe allergy situation, I'm sure it would be fine. Definitely ask your MO though.

I asked my MO about Benadryl because of my skin trouble. She said the pathways Benadryl and Tamoxifen take through the liver are different (sorry if I'm misunderstanding this), so the interaction is not very strong. So she called Benadryl a "yellow light," ie use occasionally. Have you tried some of the others, like Zyrtec? That apparently doesn't interfere with Tamoxifen at all.

    Hello Ladies,

New to this forum, about to start Tamoxifen next week. Would really like to know about any personal experiences. I'm sure my onc will tell me a bunch more things but I KNOW he isn't taking it.

Will be on this for the next 10 years. Thought it was going to only be 5.

    Thanks,

    Kimberly

    Hi -

I am new here also, started tamoxifen on 9/15. After the first week with no side effects, I started having sleeping problems, but that seems to have worked itself out, and instead I am exhausted and can easily sleep 10-11 hours a night on weekends. I do push myself a little during the week by getting up at 4:30 several mornings to go running. I used to be able to do that more frequently and am trying to work my way back.

My question is this: has anyone noticed changes in taste from Tamo? I did have changes during chemo, but now it seems like there are so many foods that I am repelled by. The real tragedy is that I have lost my taste for wine! Although that may be good in the long run.....

    Hope everyone is doing well!

ndgirl, I have a similar situation with allergic reactions to some foods. My PCP "reassured" me that since benedryl is the drug that I need to control the allergic reaction, and "breathing trumps cancer", I need to take the benedryl....especially since it is not often. I think that some folks have used it for a sleep aid nightly, and that is not recommended. My MO is perfectly fine with my taking benedryl as necessary for allergic reactions.

    Welcome Taguekids and Donnabelle...

Thanks everyone for the advice on Benedryl.

Taque- My MO told me that I would be on Tamo for 5 yrs possibly 10. They used to tell everyone 10 yrs, then it went to 5 and now they are doing studies again suggesting maybe 10 is the golden number.. My MO told me not to worry about it and that we would discuss it after the 5 yrs were up. He is not the most talkative me...

Donnabelle. I started my Tamo on Sept 27th and have not noticed any changes in taste but I do notice I am not really hungry and I have to remind myself to eat and when I do eat I eat less. Maybe it affects everyone diff?

Sleep--ohhh I miss sleep!! I am on the prowl half the night I swear.... I havent taken anything yet to try to help this. I was hoping I would eventually adjust!

I've been on tamoxifen for more than a month, no side effects. Just went for a followup on Wed, MO asked if any issues, told her nope, was in and out of her office in less than 1/2 hr.

Today I received an email from her office saying the doc is prescribing me Foltx. Quoting the email:

This medication is a prescribed supplement to ensure your vitamin B and folate levels stay regulated.

That's all the information in the email. I tried searching on the net to see what on earth is Foltx and why she didn't tell me about it when I was in her office 2 days ago. If she says it's a supplement, does that mean it's not necessary? Seems like the medication is an after-thought... I'm not keen on taking another medication if it's not necessary. Any ladies know what Foltx is for and the role of vit B and folate?

    Thanks.

guineamom - Have never heard of Foltx. In fact, never heard of anyone being prescribed a supplement to regulate Vit B and folate while on Tammi. I've been on Tammi since Jan 2011. If you find out more, would you let us all know?

    Hi everyone,

For ladies that have problems sleeping while on Tamoxifen, you can try melatonin 3 mg at night. I asked my oncologist and he said there is no interactions with Tamoxifen. It is not only good for sleep, it also decreases the rate of recurrence.

    Hi New2bc

Thanks for the info. Please elaborate more on Melatonin decreasing the rate of recurrence. Can you post a link to info on this?

Breastcancer.org has a research report dated in 2012 if I understand it correctly that states there is a higher recurrence rate among those that get less than 6 hours of sleep a night.
