Bounce - just wanted to say you made me laugh with your plans to annihilate various cars. I may have one you can add to your list, it you get on a roll.
So far for me, tamox has been the worst part of treatment. Hair loss (drives me crazy finding hair everywhere), night sweats, sleeping very lightly and fatigue are wearing on me. I'm hoping these level out soon. Not sure I can do years of this.

Hang in there everyone! My SEs have definitely tapered off after 6 months. I was despairing about the fatigue and now I am so much better. CogFog I have learned to live with, had to make a few adjustments and remind myself of things with lists. Foot and leg cramps on and off...no problem. I haven't gained weight and people keep telling me my skin looks great (it would be nice if that was Tamox, who knows?)
Good advice about the eye exam. I am due for one, so I will definitely make the appt.

how long after chemo did you start tamoxifen?

you usually start 3-4 weeks after chemo

for me it was the same day my mo said i would be taking a break from chemo for now. So about 2 weeks after my last infusion. My mo never told me specifically when to start

Donnabelle - Funny you should mention peeing your pants and it not being a Tamoxifen SE...
I wanted to ask if anyone has noticed changes in that department.
I pee more often and when I have to go - I have to go. No waiting around.
Anyone else?

I started tamoxifen after I finished rads.
Thankfully, I haven't had thinning hair - but it's growing back really slowly.

Bounce - same here. I thought it was just me .. can barely get in the house and I have to go and not in 5 minutes - now!! Guess maybe it can be a Tamox SE. Yippers.

Well I didn't think it was an SE, but maybe it is! I thought it was old age, as even before tamoxifen I seemed to have a harder time. Maybe Tamox has intensified it?

I agree with everyone there on the side effect of having to pee and pee now!! I was wondering what was wrong with me..
Bounce thank you for the laughs. I will add my ex boss who eliminated my job when I was on a medical leave of absence for a month after I hurt myself by going back to soon, she also said I was faking the side effects of radiation- hmmmm good faker I ended up in the hosp.. So have fun with her cars- LOL

Has anyone read that you should not take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) while taking Tamoxifen? I just stumbled upon that info last night...seems it is similar to some anti-depressants in that it can impede the effectiveness of the Tamoxifen. Just as allergy season is starting in some parts of our world!!!

Oh yes, summergal, cannot take Tamoxifen & Benadryl............it's a no-no. It isn't just Benadryl it is anything that has diphenhydramine in it....be careful and read labels or go to Drugs com.

Hi gals!
I've been enjoying a blissful few weeks since chemo side effects finished, but I had my implants done on Friday and now need to start tamoxifen. Chemo threw me into menopause, and I've been having numerous hot flashes day and night. I've also got that awesome dryness down below and a decreased libido. I'm seeing my gynae in a few weeks to discuss management of these symptoms. My question for you is: when do you think I should take the tamoxifen - morning or night? Have any of you had similar issues prior to starting tamoxifen? Thanks in advance for your help!

uds, I take Tami at night however I have noticed night sweats while sleeping and warm flashes at times during the day. I too would like to know which time of day is better

Tamoxifen interacts to a greater or lesser degree to over 300 drugs. I look at this list prior to taking any new med.

Thank you NormaJean and Corky. I didn't know these things! Gee whiz. When I was first diagnosed I was like a medical student with learning "everything there is to know about breast cancer!!!" But I admit I've fallen off the wagon as far as research has gone in the past few months. I'm soooo glad there are all these forums to ask questions!

Hi Ladies! New to this thread. Saw my MO for 1st time today. Had R mastectomy 3/7. My 10yr risk for getting BC in L breast is 5%. Can lower that to 2% with Tamixifen for 5 years. Think it's worth the side effects?

Welcome Franny! You have great numbers, as did I, but as my MO reminded me it's all statistics, and not necessarily a personal prognosis. I would say, in answer to your question about whether it is worth it, that it all depends on what your body's reaction to the Tamoxifen is. If you sail through with few SEs, why not do it. Time will tell for you... Best of luck!

Franny, I agree with Lacey. Give tam a try, you may have no side effects. I don't have any. My oncotype came back that I'd only get a 1 percent benefit from chemo, so no chemo here, but that's a little more difficult to start and stop. I have a 9% chance of recurrence, lowered to 5 by taking tamoxifen. I know nothing is a certainty and I could fall in the 5, but I'm moving on, living life and praying for the best. I wish the best for you! Kim

Franny - Yes, I agree with the others that why not give Tami a try? I am several weeks in and really have had no side effects.

Ladies- how long after starting tamoxifen did your side effects begin??

uds, I felt some right away. The first day my stomach was a little upset, but that did not last long. the hot flashes started next. Then over time some of the pain in my joints flared and my hands got really bad. But I am feeling better now. So it comes and goes. It was suggested to me to write how I felt down, but I never did.
Now I am having some mild achiness in my lower back and some cramping in my uterus area. It feels like I might be getting a period, but I haven't had one of those in years. Anyone have that happening?

Uds, in less than a week.
My MO gave OK to go to only 10 mg. but that was only to ease into Tamox. I take 20 mgs twice a week and have to work back up to 20 mg every day. I take it at night, the daytime dosage interfered with my brain at work-not good.
Awoke in a puddle of Tamox night sweats at 3am, and wanted to share with you ladies a solution. The Chillow, as seen on TV....trust me, worth checking out.
Went down to fridge, removed Chillow, placed in pillowcase over my pillow and have now cooled off considerably. Back to zzzzzzzzzz

I literally just returned 2 chillows to bed bath n beyond because they kept leaking n my pillow would be wet. My hubby asked why I didn't get replace and I told him that I was afraid new ones would leak as well. I'm assuming yours doesn't leak. Did u do anything special or not put in the water?? Thanks. Because I would love to use a chillow again because without the leaking they do work

Thanks ladies for your responses & encouragement to at least give the tamoxifen a try. Took my 1st pill last night at bedtime. Will let you know how it goes! Hope everyone has a nice weekend. Finally sunny & warm here near Pittsburgh!

I finished my post-exchange antibiotics yesterday and am trying to figure out if my nausea was due to that or the tamoxifen I started 4 days ago. I've been having hot flashes since chemo, so I can't use that as a gauge. I'll have to see what happens!
