If you do a mail order form, it is a 90 day prescription.  I have Medco as my prescription insurance company and mail order works out great.

I started a week ago. No SE yet! I also heard that there could be weight gain. Just keep moving, it will keep your weight in check & your energy level up.

I do the 90 day, via the mail, also with Medco. No issues.

    MBCR, yep, keep moving!

Those of you with Medco:  I'll be starting tamox at the end of the month.  I've never used the Medco service.  From the mailers I've gotten from them, it as my understanding that you have your doctor fill out some paperwork?  Or is all of this generated on our end?  It's a boneheaded question, I know...but sometimes I'm a bonehead.

I use another mailorder  service.  I just have to tell my doctor that I will be mail ordering the rx.  They write out the rx in a different way so that you can get 3 months at a time.

no such thing as a bonehead question!

    Good luck!

I use Medco, the only thing the doctor has to do is write out a 90 day suply with refills. There is a form you will need to fill out from Medco, you can get it only line @ medcohealth.com.

Ladies, I have been on Tamoxifen since March 12, my first three periods were very heavy(which was not the norm for me) (also I did not have chemo) this month my period was late and so far I have only had a bit of discharge, browish. What is the norm for your period. I am 41 and pre menopausal. Thank-you for your help.

mfgibby - I have been on the Tamox for 1 month today. (Only 59 bottles to go!)  I had my period when I started it.  This month all I've had for the past 3 days is a little brownish discharge so I was relieved to read your post.  Maybe that's just the way it is for some women.  I am 45 and premenopausal.  I'm guessing that's a picture of your kids.  They're cute.

My onc. said yesterday, that scans will only scare me, and not be conclusive.  My ribs really hurt, and one looks different, extended out.  I asked onc. about three times, during my exam , if it had anything to do with rads. or tamoxifen, and he just shrugged his shoulders.. then he said he'll see me in four months, and I don't have to have a mammo. for a year.  It's like he didn't want to tell me anything, or thought I was too paranoid.  Then he said that breast/bone cancer are closely related, and I can't do anymore chemo.  or rads. so it won't do any good, to find mets any sooner.

Maybe I should stop looking for symptoms, I didn't want to go through chemo. and rads. again anyway.

Renee--LL Bean has nightgowns made out of that wicking material. My mom got me one, but I don't think it's really worth the extra money it cost. I'm more comfortable just wearing summer nighties all winter. I keep a fan blowing right on me all year long.

I finished  my 5 years of tamoxifen last fall. I tolerated it with only minor SEs, mainly hot flashes and some insomnia. I do have a lot of achiness, but my oncologist feels that is more from the loss of estrogen (no ovaries anymore) than the tamox itself.

Well been on tamox for 2 months (almost). I have a few pills left in my second bottle. Getting ready to pick up third. SE have not been that bad. Very tired, irritible and bitchy in the beginning. Always on edge and just angry. That has gotten much better. I am so worried about gaining weight but haven't started doing anything to avoid the weight gain. In other words I don't work out. Guess I can't complain about the weight thing then. I am now starting to get hot flashes. I don't like this SE. It really stinks.  I am still getting my period which I thought would stop but it hasn't. I have ovarian issues and my gyn told me that tamox would help stop the estrogen production which causes ovulation and therefore my pain (severe from cysts) during ovulation would cease. That hasn't happened either. I am getting really heavy discharge but no yeast infection which I think is a good thing because alot of you had issues with that. So far that is my journey.

I am so thankful for you ladies. God Bless all of you.

I started Tamox a week ago. So far the only side effects I have are not to bad. I am so tired though when I take the thing. I could sleep all day and all night if I could. My feet also get a little sore but I'm not sure if that's a side effect. Hard to tell what is a side effect or me just being paranoid. I haven't had my period since I had my first chemo treatment. My onc doc says that was a good thing for me since my tumor was estrogen positive. I have read some of the posts and I thought Tamox was suppose to stop the estrogen and no periods were to happen. I'm a bit confused on that. Can Tamox start your periods back up? I have been getting some cramps like my periods coming. I was also wondering if your periods come back after a person is done with Tamox? I'm only 41 and premenopausal.

Has anyone else had dizzyness or vertigo?  Sometimes I have to grab onto to something to keep from falling over!  Is it the Tamoxifen???

Laurie, as young as you are, your periods will probably come back - the Tamox doesn't stop them.  But who knows... everyone is different.  Good luck.

Barb - I know what you mean.  I go back and forth.  I wan't to stop taking it, but get scared.

Right now, I am down to half dose - only 10mg a day.  Have an appt with my onc next week, and I will tell him what I have been doing.

Tamoxifen and periods--From what I understood from my onc, tamox doesn't stop your periods if you are premenopausal.  It gives you menopausal symptoms however like the hot flashes and night sweats.  Also, in premenopausal women, the issue of uterine cancer isn't really a factor so much with tamox because you slough off the lining of your uterus with your periods every month and that would be where the risk is.  BTW, I'm 44.  Am I wrong in understanding this?   This is also, from what I understood, why postmenopausal women get AI's rather than tamox...because they have stopped getting their periods.

What has been your understanding?  I'm also curious since I just had my first period since February.  It's pretty light, but I am also having night sweats.  I've been taking a progesterone based med (I'm PR-) to stop the hot flashes, which has worked really well.  I need to ask my onc if I can still continue this during the tamox.  I hope so becasue my heat flashes from chemo were way too intense to lead a somewhat nomal life.

And thanks for the Medco info!

Laurie-----tamoxifen doesn't stop the estrogen from being produced (the AIs do that), it just blocks the estrogen receptors in the breast. My oncologist explained that while on tamox, 25% will continue with normal periods, 50% will have irregular periods, and 25% will stop altogether. Mine became very light and very irregular, I got used to taking minipads with me wherever I went just in case.

Anne, and others--can anyone explain why Tamoxifen causes menopausal symptoms all it's doing is blocking the estrogen to the bc receptors? I'm curious. And I'm really sick of having hot flashes AND my period. Foot in mouth

Thank you everyone for there answers to my questions. I had some of my information screwed up. It's so nice to have this site to go on and get the straight answers. You get so much info when this happens that sometimes it gets hard to remember everything.

    leggy,

My left rib right below my bra line sticks out too. I asked onc rad about it after rads and he said not to worry. I figure I was wearing a too tight bra during rads, which I finished in October. Over the past 2 months, I've noticed some weakness and achiness in my left shoulder and pec area. All my docs attribute that to the gift that keeps giving (rads), and recommended I NOT avoid the exercise. So I've had to decrease the weight, and honor my body when it just doesn't feel like doing much. Hope that helps.

    Munch,

I thought it was the Effexor, which I started a month after the tamox. It comes and goes, but doc didn't seem too concerned. I haven't hit the floor yet! Laughing

It's a new way of life, but I am grateful for the new way I look at things. Keep looking forward!

I am also getting  dizzy when I get up from a chair, etc.  For a split-second, it seems like I am going to pass out (it seems like everything is going black); I have to stop and hold on to the chair, then I am fine.  I could walk on the treadmill, go on the ellypical machine and I am fine, it is only when I first try to stand up.  Never had this sypmton before tamoxifen.

Leggyj:  My ribs are sore too. I've only had 4 rad treatments. If you're not happy w/ you're laisez-faire affect about your concern for the rib pain, get another opinion. It's your right!

joyceNJ:  how is your blood pressure? You might have orthostatic hypotension.

Munchy, I've noticed being a bit light headed, and "Seeing black" if I stand up from stooping over in the garden. I just thought it was low blood pressure! Mine is very low.

    Ladies,

Dizziness and vertigo are a little bit different from each other.  I experienced some vertigo about 3 months of starting tamox and it went away after a month.  Dizziness/light headed is due to getting up too fast and also low blood pressure (per my onc as I asked her to clarify vertigo for me!  I called it dizziness and she questioned what I was feeling.)

As to the rib pain - yep rads.  I had the achiness and the sticking out of the rib too.  Had bone scan and nothing showed up.  Rad onc said side effect.

    Hope this helps!

    Gentle Hugs!

    Trish

MBRC, my ribs get sore front to back around the area that was radiated. I finished rads April15 and I still get the sorenes in my ribs.

Thank-you Sue, yes those are my children. I did end up getting a fairly normal period, that was light for 3days.

My cycles were always 21-25 days, now they are 28-35 days. I only used Mirena after2005, and prior to that no other form of birht control. I do not like not knowing for sure when it is suppose to start. I have even taken a prgnancy test.
